International oil prices climbed after the collapse of a second round of ceasefire talks between Washington and Tehran. On Sunday, Brent crude, the global benchmark for oil pricing, rose by more than 2 percent. As of 12:30 a.m. GMT, the price stood at 107.35 dollars per barrel, nearly 47 percent higher than before the conflict began.

Despite the diplomatic deadlock, major Asian stock markets opened on a positive note. Investors appeared to largely disregard the uncertainty surrounding the ceasefire discussions. Japan’s Nikkei 225 index gained about 0.4 percent in early trading, while South Korea’s KOSPI index rose by as much as 1.5 percent.

The stalled negotiations have heightened concerns over energy supply stability, but market sentiment in Asia suggests cautious optimism amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has reportedly been pressing to promote several officials despite existing government audit objections. The commission’s Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) has met multiple times, but representatives from the Finance Ministry, Public Administration Ministry, and the Posts and Telecommunications Division, along with BTRC’s vice chairman and administration director general, opposed the move, citing that the audit objections were directly linked to recruitment and financial issues. The matter was later discussed in the commission’s 304th meeting, where it was decided that promotions would be considered only after determining the relevance of the audit objections.

Despite this, BTRC instructed its Legal and Licensing Division to seek expert opinions, disregarding the DPC’s recommendation. Sources claim the commission is rushing to finalize promotions before possible leadership changes following the next national election. Two deputy directors who had filed court petitions against alleged irregularities were recently transferred, raising concerns of administrative retaliation. Officials fear such actions could discourage future legal challenges against internal misconduct.

Questions have also emerged about the legality and cost-effectiveness of several spectrum monitoring stations operating without government approval, which some sources say contribute to unnecessary public expenditure.

Authorities have been urged to prevent Dr. Kamda Prasad Saha, accused of issuing a false forensic report in the Sohagi Jahan Tonu murder case, from leaving Bangladesh. The report alleges that Saha, now serving as treasurer at Khulna Medical University, is seeking a no-objection certificate to travel to several SAARC countries, with suspicions that he intends to flee to the United States and seek political asylum. Tonu’s father and mother both accused him of falsifying the autopsy report and demanded his immediate arrest.

Saha was the head of the forensic department at Comilla Medical College when Tonu was murdered. Despite visible injury marks, his first postmortem report failed to identify a cause of death, and the second report implied consensual sexual activity, sparking public outrage. Local residents and students have called for his travel clearance to be suspended and for him to be placed under surveillance.

The renewed attention follows recent progress in the murder investigation, including the remand and imprisonment of a retired army officer and DNA testing orders for three suspects.

Thousands of residents in southern Lebanon are leaving their homes again following new Israeli attack warnings issued on April 27, 2026. Many of those fleeing had only recently returned after a ceasefire allowed them to go back and assess damage or attempt repairs. The renewed evacuation orders have forced them into uncertainty once more.

Local sources reported that among the hundreds of thousands displaced earlier, about 75 percent of one village’s residents had returned before the latest warnings. As people rushed to leave, heavy traffic jams formed on main roads, reminiscent of the early days of the conflict. During the evacuation, an Israeli missile strike hit a coffee shop at a roundabout, killing at least one person and injuring several others, according to initial reports.

The situation in the region is reportedly deteriorating further, raising fears of escalating violence and renewed humanitarian crises in southern Lebanon.

UN Special Rapporteur on Torture Dr. Alice Jill Edwards has called for justice for the victims of the July massacre and comprehensive institutional reform in Bangladesh. During her visit to Dhaka, she discussed with Amar Desh the need to end custodial torture, restructure law enforcement, and ensure compensation for victims in line with international standards. Edwards emphasized that any reform of the Rapid Action Battalion must go beyond rebranding and include fundamental changes in its operations and mindset.

She welcomed the government’s plan to form a parliamentary human rights commission and urged that human rights be treated as a universal issue rather than a political one. Edwards also highlighted the importance of creating a safe and dignified process for victims to report abuses and called for a truth-telling and reconciliation mechanism. She reminded Bangladesh of its obligations under the UN Convention Against Torture, noting the interim government’s recent withdrawal of reservations from Article 14.

Edwards stressed that accountability and strong human rights culture are essential for rebuilding public trust and institutional stability in Bangladesh.

A senior Russian lawmaker has claimed that the United States was militarily unprepared for a war against Iran and that its belief in achieving quick results through limited military force was misguided. Alexei Pushkov, chairman of the Information Policy Commission of Russia’s Federation Council, told state news agency TASS that Washington wrongly assumed it could secure rapid strategic success through restricted strikes.

Pushkov suggested that the U.S. experience in Venezuela may have influenced this perception. He said former U.S. President Donald Trump believed that precise military operations could pressure foreign governments after observing Venezuela’s limited response to U.S. actions against President Nicolás Maduro. Pushkov added that Trump might have thought a similar approach could work in Iran.

According to Pushkov, Iran had long prepared for potential conflict by moving most of its missile facilities underground and building a large arsenal of missiles and drones. He said Iran had strengthened itself militarily, economically, and existentially, while tensions between Washington and Tehran remain high amid ongoing military and diplomatic frictions.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is preparing a major organizational reshuffle of its Dhaka city units ahead of its upcoming national council. The party leadership plans to reorganize both the north and south city committees, aiming to combine experienced figures with younger, more active leaders. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the party’s structure before the next city corporation elections and to create a more dynamic organizational framework.

According to party sources, the restructuring will begin with the Dhaka city units, followed by youth, volunteer, student, and labor wings. Senior leaders have indicated that the final decision will come from acting chairman Tarique Rahman. In the north, current convener Aminul Haque is expected to retain his position, while in the south, member secretary Tanvir Ahmed Robin is being considered for a leading role. Grassroots leaders have urged that “dedicated and tested” activists who remained active during difficult times be prioritized.

BNP insiders believe the reorganization will help revitalize the party’s political activities in Dhaka and strengthen its preparation for the forthcoming national council and local elections.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, leading the opposition in the 13th National Parliament with 68 seats, continues its political partnership with the National Citizens Party (NCP), which holds six seats. The two parties, part of an 11-party alliance formed before the last election, have been working jointly in parliament and on the streets. However, questions have emerged about the long-term direction of their alliance, with speculation about BNP’s attempts to attract NCP and differing strategies for upcoming local elections.

Leaders from both Jamaat and NCP have publicly reaffirmed their commitment to the alliance, describing it as stronger than before. Jamaat has given NCP key positions, including the post of opposition chief whip and an additional reserved women’s seat, signaling continued cooperation. Political analysts note that NCP’s growing influence, bolstered by new members from various political backgrounds, has increased its bargaining power within the alliance.

Despite some field-level complexities over local election preparations, both parties maintain that their relationship remains stable. Analysts suggest that NCP’s long-term political future will likely depend on maintaining alignment with Jamaat and the 11-party coalition’s shared reform agenda.

At least 14 people, including women and children, were killed in a powerful Israeli airstrike on southern Lebanon, according to the country’s health ministry. The attack, carried out on Sunday, April 26, 2026, also left at least 37 others injured. Among the dead were two children and two women. On the same day, Tel Aviv confirmed the death of an Israeli soldier during ongoing clashes in the region.

Despite an existing ceasefire, recent days have seen escalating cross-border attacks between Israel and Lebanon, reigniting tensions. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the strike, asserting Israel’s right to act against any “planned or imminent” attacks and to maintain full freedom to neutralize emerging threats. The Israeli military also ordered residents of seven towns in southern Lebanon to evacuate immediately.

Tel Aviv claimed the operation was conducted in response to tensions with Hezbollah. However, civilian casualties and evacuation orders have placed the fragile ceasefire process under severe strain, raising concerns about renewed regional instability.
