The death toll from the powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Myanmar has surpassed 2,700. Former imam of the Mayoma Mosque, Soe Nai, has lost 170 of his family members and loved ones in the disaster. Reports indicate that three mosques in the Sagaing region collapsed, including the largest, Mayoma Mosque. Many worshippers inside these mosques were killed. In the following days, Soe Nai received one heartbreaking news after another—the deaths of his relatives, friends, and former colleagues, most of whom perished inside the mosque. “Among the deceased are small children,” he said. On Monday, Myanmar’s military leader Min Aung Hlaing stated that nearly 500 worshippers died when mosques collapsed during prayers.
