A Dhaka tribunal has sentenced human rights activist Mostakin Sharif and his wife Jannatul Naima to seven years in prison for torturing their domestic worker, Hawa Akter, eight years ago in South Banasree. The verdict was delivered on Sunday, June 28, 2026, by Judge Shahanaj Sultana of Dhaka’s Third Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal. Both convicts were also fined 50,000 taka each, with an additional six months of imprisonment in default of payment. They were present in court when the judgment was announced and were later sent back to prison.

According to the case details, on October 31, 2018, police rescued 14-year-old Hawa Akter from the couple’s residence in a severely injured condition. The investigation revealed that from July 7 to October 31, 2018, the couple had confined and tortured her using heated rods, iron spatulas, and other means, causing serious burns and injuries. The court began the trial on September 19, 2022, after framing charges, and heard testimony from nine witnesses.

The ruling concludes a prolonged legal process that began with the 2018 case filed by Khilgaon police following the rescue of the victim.

Dhaka tribunal jails activist couple for seven years over domestic worker torture case

A Dhaka court has once again postponed the submission of the further investigation report in the murder case of Inquilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi. On Sunday, June 28, 2026, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Sefatullah set a new date of July 15 after the investigating officer, CID Assistant Superintendent of Police Abdul Kadir Bhuiyan, failed to submit the report. This marks the 17th postponement of the report submission.

Earlier, on January 15, 2026, the case’s complainant, Inquilab Moncho member secretary Abdullah Al Jaber, expressed dissatisfaction with the charge sheet filed by the Detective Branch and submitted a formal objection. The court accepted his objection and ordered a reinvestigation. The initial charge sheet, filed on January 6, 2026, accused 17 individuals, including former ward councillor Taizul Islam Chowdhury Bappi and Faisal Karim Masud, the prime suspect.

According to the case details, Hadi was shot on December 12, 2025, in Dhaka’s Paltan area and later died in Singapore on December 18, 2025, while undergoing treatment.

Eight arrested in Nilphamari for casino gambling and drug use during police raids

At least 25 people, including police officers and journalists, were injured in clashes between two groups of villagers in Maheshwardi village of Bhanga upazila, Faridpur, on Sunday morning. The violence erupted around 8 a.m. over an anti-drug rally, leading to vandalism of homes and shops. Police intervened to control the situation as the Bhanga-Faridpur-Barishal highway became severely congested, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded.

According to police and local sources, the conflict stemmed from a dispute over local dominance following an anti-drug meeting held at Kalam Kazi’s house on Friday. On Saturday evening, an attack on Delwar Mia’s home allegedly by supporters of Khokon Mia escalated tensions, culminating in armed clashes at Pukhuria bus stand the next morning. The violence spread to nearby villages, involving stone-throwing and property damage.

Three seriously injured individuals were admitted to Bhanga Upazila Health Complex. Police said they are working to restore order as investigations continue into the causes of the confrontation.

Clashes over anti-drug rally in Bhanga injure 25, disrupt highway traffic

A schoolgirl was killed after being hit by a pickup truck on the Tangail-Jamalpur regional highway in Dhanbari upazila of Tangail. The accident occurred around 6:30 a.m. on Sunday when the Dhaka-bound pickup, reportedly driven by a sleeping driver, ran over the student. The victim was identified as 17-year-old Mosha Sadia Bokul, daughter of Md. Abu Sayeed Bokul from Bakulbari in Dhanbari municipality. Police and fire service personnel recovered the body and handed it over to her family.

According to Dhanbari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Nurus Salam Siddique, the vehicle involved in the accident has been seized and brought to the station, while the driver remains at large. An unnatural death case has been filed in connection with the incident.

Authorities are continuing efforts to locate the driver as the investigation proceeds into the cause of the fatal crash.

Sleeping driver kills schoolgirl in Tangail highway pickup accident

RAB-10 has arrested Faisal Sheikh, the main suspect in an attack on the Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate during an anti-drug operation in Daulatdia Puravita, Goaland upazila of Rajbari. The arrest was announced at a press conference held at the RAB-10 Faridpur office on Sunday morning, June 28, 2026. Faisal Sheikh, aged 30, was detained the previous evening in Noapara area of Fakirhat upazila, Bagerhat district, with assistance from RAB-6.

According to the briefing, the incident occurred on June 20, when a mobile court led by Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md. Muntasir Hasan Khan recovered heroin from Faisal Sheikh during a raid. As officials prepared to take legal action, Faisal’s associates attacked the team, obstructed government duties, and forcibly freed him from custody. RAB-10 intensified surveillance to locate the fugitive suspect and successfully captured him. He has been handed over to the relevant police station for further legal proceedings.

RAB-10 arrests main suspect in Goaland attack on assistant commissioner during anti-drug raid

According to local sources, the plants had recently begun producing gourds and pumpkins, and the farmer had been selling them daily to support his family. Witnesses said the vandals used sharp weapons to sever the plants at their bases, leaving the field devastated by morning.

Maheshpur Upazila Agriculture Officer Yasmin Sultana expressed anger and sorrow over the incident, confirming that an assistant agriculture officer was sent to the site. She assured that the affected farmer would receive legal assistance and priority for future government support. Vandals cut down four bighas of gourd and pumpkin crops in Maheshpur, causing major loss

Police in Melandah upazila of Jamalpur arrested a woman named Srabonti Akter on Sunday morning for allegedly killing her eight-month-old son by throwing him into a pond. The incident occurred in the Bhawki area, and police confirmed the arrest after locals reported the discovery of the child’s body floating in the water.

According to local sources, Srabonti married Humayun Ahmed of Jamalpur’s Kompupur area about two years ago. Their marriage had been troubled by allegations of Srabonti’s extramarital affair, leading to frequent disputes. On the morning of the incident, while her husband was asleep, she reportedly left home with the baby and later attempted to flee after abandoning the child in the pond. Locals became suspicious when she tried to hire an autorickshaw and detained her before informing police.

Melandah Police Station Officer-in-Charge Obaidur Rahman said Srabonti was taken into custody and the child’s body sent for autopsy. Legal proceedings are underway, and authorities are investigating to determine the full circumstances of the incident.

Mother arrested in Jamalpur for allegedly killing her eight-month-old baby

Field workers of the private development organization Page Development Center in Habiganj have alleged that their jobs are not being regularized even after ten months unless they pay bribes to Area Manager Jahangir. The organization operates in 17 districts with more than 180 branches implementing various socio-economic programs. According to company policy, field workers should be regularized after six months of probation, but several former employees said they were forced to pay Tk 10,000 to secure permanent positions.

Former field workers Yasmin Akter, Mohammad Roman, and Rezuana Akter accused Jahangir and branch manager Abul Hasan of demanding bribes, verbal abuse, and harassment. Some alleged that Jahangir made inappropriate late-night video calls to female staff and threatened them if they did not respond. A loan recipient, Zahur Ali, also claimed Jahangir sought bribes for job placements through intermediaries.

Jahangir denied taking bribes, saying his strict behavior was due to the difficulty of loan recovery. Page’s director Mujibur Rahman confirmed receiving written complaints and announced a three-member committee to investigate the allegations.

Page Development Center manager accused of bribery and misconduct in Habiganj branch

Four members of a family in Kerala, India, have died by suicide after being unable to pay their house rent. Police reported that the body of a seven-year-old girl was recovered from a river near Piravom on Sunday, marking the completion of the search for all four family members. Earlier, on Friday evening, the bodies of the girl’s visually impaired mother Viji and her two-year-old brother were found in the same river, followed by the father’s body on Saturday.

Investigators identified Viji and her son as residents of a rented house in Kothamangalam. The father, Narayanan, originally from Palakkad, had been living there with his family. Police said the family had recently sought help from the Kothamangalam police station after failing to pay rent due to financial hardship. Authorities had arranged alternative housing for them, where they were scheduled to move on Sunday.

CCTV footage from a restaurant in Piravom showed the family dining together on Thursday. Police have registered an unnatural death case and will hand over the bodies to relatives after autopsy.

Four family members in Kerala die by suicide after failing to pay rent

A major tragedy was averted in Mumbai during the Ashura Tazia procession when police arrested a man accused of attempting to poison thousands of participants. On Friday, authorities detained Fayaz Premji in the Byculla area after several people fell ill from consuming pills he had distributed. Tests revealed the pills contained zinc phosphide, a toxic compound commonly used in rat poison. Premji reportedly admitted that he planned to kill around 15,000 people by distributing the poisonous tablets.

According to NDTV, Premji was seen handing out the pills near the Rehmatabad cemetery on Reay Road, claiming they were painkillers or immunity boosters. At least eleven people became sick after taking the capsules and were hospitalized, though all are now out of danger. One of the affected individuals, Salman Sayed, reported stomach pain and vomiting after ingestion.

Mumbai man arrested for attempting mass poisoning during Ashura Tazia procession

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 in Dhaka on Sunday sentenced former Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Habibur Rahman, former ADC of Rampura Zone Rashedul Islam, and former OC of Rampura Police Station Moshiur Rahman to death for crimes against humanity. The verdict relates to the killing of Amir Hossain, Maya Islam, and Md. Nadim during the July uprising in Rampura. The tribunal also sentenced former SI Tarikul Islam to life imprisonment and former ASI Chanchal Chandra Sarkar to 20 years in prison.

The three-member panel, led by Justice Golam Mortuza Mojumdar, delivered the verdict at around 12:15 p.m. The other members were Justice Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury. Of the five accused, four remain absconding, with only Chanchal Chandra Sarkar appearing in court from prison. Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam stated that the prosecution presented all evidence and sought the highest punishment for the accused.

The trial began in October last year, with arguments concluding on June 15. The tribunal had earlier deferred the verdict to allow submission of new digital evidence before setting June 28 for pronouncement.

Dhaka tribunal sentences ex-DMP chief Habib and two others to death for crimes against humanity

A joint operation by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) recovered one one-shooter gun, eleven detonators, and eleven explosives from the border area of Sonasar in Barothakuri Union under Zakiganj upazila of Sylhet. The operation took place on Saturday night, June 27, 2026, following intelligence reports that illegal arms and explosives had been smuggled into Bangladesh and stored near the border. The information was confirmed through a press release issued by the BGB headquarters on Sunday.

According to the BGB, the Zakiganj Battalion (19 BGB) and RAB-9 formed a joint team that conducted a special search operation about 1.5 kilometers inside Bangladesh from the zero line in the Biabail BOP area. The recovered items were found during an extensive search at the Sonasar Bricks Field area. Preliminary assessment suggests the seized weapons and explosives were smuggled into the country.

BGB and RAB recover arms and explosives in joint operation near Sylhet border

A man named Zahid, aged 38, died in police custody after being beaten by locals in Dhaka’s Adabor area on Saturday. Residents of the Shyamoli Housing Second Project area allegedly caught him while he was attempting a mugging at gunpoint and subjected him to a mob beating. Police later rescued him and took him to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for initial treatment before presenting him in court. Zahid fell ill in court and was transferred to the nearby National Medical College Hospital, where he died around 4:30 p.m. His body was later sent to Dhaka Medical College morgue for autopsy.

According to Sub-Inspector Md. Yamin Sarkar of Adabor Police Station, Zahid was reportedly addicted to drugs and had no contact with his family. He was known to demand money from people and resort to mugging when refused. The police stated that Zahid had allegedly taken 30,000 taka from a man named Khorshed at gunpoint before being caught by locals. A case related to the incident is currently under process.

The police have confirmed the death and initiated legal proceedings regarding the incident.

Man dies in police custody after mob beating over alleged mugging in Dhaka

Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police (DB) arrested former Awami League lawmaker Nur Mohammad from a residence in the capital’s Gulshan area on Saturday night. According to DB officials, the arrest took place around 8 p.m. Nur Mohammad is a former Member of Parliament from Jamalpur-1 constituency and also served as the president of Bakshiganj Upazila Awami League.

DB sources stated that Nur Mohammad is a named accused in a case filed under the Explosives Act in Jamalpur. He is also a suspect in another case related to a procession and cocktail explosion that occurred on June 18 in the Mohakhali bus stand area of Dhaka. Authorities confirmed that necessary legal procedures against him are currently underway.
