Locals in Ghorashal area of Palash upazila, Narsingdi, detained a microbus driver on Wednesday morning for allegedly trying to abandon a severely injured elderly man by the roadside, believing him to be dead. The incident occurred near Bagdi area on the Panchdona–Ghorashal road. Witnesses said the driver was caught red-handed while attempting to leave the bloodied man in a secluded spot. An angry crowd beat the driver before handing him over to police. The injured man was taken to Palash Upazila Health Complex, where he later died.
Police identified the detained driver as Monir Hossain from Banaripara upazila in Barishal. During initial questioning, Monir claimed that several people in Dhaka’s Gabtoli area had placed the unconscious man in his vehicle and asked him to take the man to a hospital. He said he panicked about possible police trouble and decided to leave the man in Narsingdi. The incident has caused public uproar, and locals demanded a fair investigation and punishment for those responsible.
Police said they are working to identify the deceased and uncover the full circumstances behind the incident.
Driver held in Narsingdi for allegedly dumping injured elderly man to hide disappearance attempt
Two members of the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF, Prasit group) were killed in separate incidents in Khagrachhari’s Ramgarh and Dighinala upazilas on Wednesday. A court in Shariatpur has ordered the imprisonment of Jajira upazila BNP vice-president Suruj Madbar and his son Swadhin Madbar in a case involving extortion, looting, vandalism, and forcible occupation of a business establishment. The two surrendered before the Senior Judicial Magistrate Court on Tuesday evening and sought bail, which Judge Ayesha Akter denied, sending them to jail. According to court documents, the accused allegedly demanded Tk 10 lakh in extortion from businessman Sobhan Madbar of Maniknagar. When he refused, his business in Kazirhat was attacked on December 2 last year, causing damage worth about Tk 40 lakh and resulting in the alleged looting and occupation of the property. Sobhan filed the case on December 12, 2025, and an arrest warrant was issued on February 26, 2026.
After receiving interim bail from the High Court in April, the accused surrendered again when the bail expired. The case remains under judicial process, and local discussions continue over the incident.
BNP leader and son jailed in Shariatpur over extortion and looting case
An expatriate named Merajul Islam, aged 44, from Asadpur Union in Homna upazila of Cumilla, died by suicide after reportedly losing about Tk 2.2 million in online gambling. According to local sources, he had been suffering from severe depression following the financial loss and consumed a toxic pesticide tablet on Tuesday. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition but could not be saved. His funeral and burial took place the same night in his village after an autopsy at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Local residents have urged strict legal action against online gambling apps to protect young people from addiction. Asadpur Union Parishad Chairman Md Jalal Pathan said he heard that Merajul took his own life after losing everything in online gambling but could not confirm the claim. Homna Police Station Officer-in-Charge Tomas Barua stated that the autopsy was completed in Dhaka and that Merajul and his son had recently returned from abroad and were facing financial hardship, which may have contributed to the incident.
Police noted that discussions about Merajul’s involvement in online gambling had surfaced on Facebook.

Police in Mymensingh’s Fulbaria upazila have arrested Mosharraf Hossain, 40, the main suspect accused of severely beating a prominent Islamic scholar. The arrest took place on Tuesday night at Laxmipur Bazar. The incident occurred on Sunday morning in Kalibajail village of Deokhola Union, reportedly over a boundary dispute near the Akand Bari area. The victim was rescued by locals and family members and first taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, from where doctors referred him to Dhaka for advanced treatment.
According to police and local sources, Mosharraf Hossain allegedly attacked the scholar with an iron rod, causing serious injuries. Following the assault, the victim’s son, Kawsar Jamil, filed a case with Fulbaria Police Station naming three suspects under case number 26 dated June 23, 2026. Officer-in-Charge Rashedul Hasan confirmed the arrest and said efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining accused.

Police arrest main suspect in assault of prominent scholar in Fulbaria
In Maheshpur upazila of Jhenaidah, miscreants cut down nearly three thousand dragon fruit trees on about one and a half bighas of land, allegedly due to a longstanding feud. The incident occurred late Tuesday night in the Beltala field area of Azampur Union. The farmer, Shahjalal, who had cultivated the orchard through loans and hard work, suffered a stroke upon discovering the destruction of his fruit-bearing trees on Wednesday morning. He was rescued and admitted to Maheshpur Upazila Health Complex, where he remains under treatment.
According to the victim’s family, the damage amounts to around ten lakh taka. Shahjalal’s father, Robiul Islam, accused two local men, Alamin and Alim, of carrying out the attack after previously threatening to destroy the orchard. Local union leaders, including Chairman Abdus Sattar Khan, visited the site and condemned the act as inhumane and financially devastating. Maheshpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sajjad Hossain described the incident as deplorable and directed authorities to take legal action against those responsible.

Miscreants destroy 3,000 dragon trees in Jhenaidah; farmer suffers stroke seeing loss
An 18-year-old youth died after being beaten by a mob on suspicion of robbery in Tongi, Gazipur. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning at the stairs leading to the Tongi-Abdullahpur BRT flyover on Station Road. Witnesses said that around 7 a.m., locals became agitated after seeing the unidentified youth and attacked him, suspecting him to be a robber. He died on the spot before police arrived.
Police later recovered the body and took it to Tongi Government Hospital. According to Md. Zillur Rahman, the investigation officer of Tongi East Police Station, an inquest report has been prepared, and the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has been informed to help identify the deceased. The process of sending the body to the morgue is underway.
Authorities are continuing efforts to confirm the victim’s identity and determine the circumstances that led to the fatal mob beating.
Youth killed in mob beating over robbery suspicion in Tongi, Gazipur
A Dhaka court has ordered former Awami League lawmaker and singer Momtaz Begum to be shown arrested in an attempted murder case linked to the July anti-discrimination student movement. The order was issued on Wednesday afternoon by Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam after the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Md. Azizul Haque of Mirpur Model Police Station, submitted a petition. Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki supported the petition, while Momtaz’s lawyers opposed it.
According to the case, on August 4, 2024, during the July movement, complainant and victim Mukhtar Hossain joined a protest in Mirpur where police and Awami League supporters allegedly attacked demonstrators. Mukhtar was injured by rubber bullets and later filed an attempted murder case. Investigators claimed evidence linked Momtaz to the incident, making her arrest necessary for further questioning.
Momtaz was previously detained by the Detective Branch on May 12, 2025, from a residence in Dhanmondi and has remained in custody since her four-day remand was approved by the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court.
Dhaka court orders Momtaz Begum shown arrested again in attempted murder case
A man named Shahid Matubbar, aged 32, was killed and two others were injured in a road accident at Pona Bus Stand area on the Dhaka-Khulna Highway in Kashiani, Gopalganj. The incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday when an unidentified speeding vehicle collided with a Nosimon. Police from Bhatiapara Highway Station recovered the body and sent the injured to Kashiani Upazila Health Complex.
The deceased was the son of Rustam Matubbar from Uttar Kandi village in Nagarkanda upazila of Faridpur. The injured were identified as Emdadul Fakir, 32, from Dofa village in Nagarkanda, and Sekendar Molla, 32, from Yusufdia village in Saltha upazila of the same district. According to Kashiani Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman, the collision was caused by a fast-moving unidentified vehicle.
Dr. Aminul Islam, Residential Medical Officer of Kashiani 100-bed Health Complex, said the injured were in critical condition and were referred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
One killed and two critically injured in a road accident in Gopalganj’s Kashiani
Police in Pekua upazila of Cox’s Bazar have detained a woman accused of impersonating a member of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) to commit fraud. The arrest took place around 11 p.m. on Tuesday at the Magnama Union Parishad office. The detainee, identified as Hasina Akter, 37, is a resident of Gachbaria in Chandanaish upazila of Chattogram and had been living in a rented house near the Magnama submarine base area.
According to Magnama Union Parishad Chairman Yunus Chowdhury, the woman had long been introducing herself as a DGFI officer posted in Pekua and had repeatedly tried to mislead him on various matters. When she again attempted to exert influence on Tuesday, he became suspicious and informed the Pekua police. Officers then arrived at the Union Parishad office and detained her.
Pekua Police Station’s investigation officer Imrul Hasan said the woman is being interrogated to determine her motives and whether others were involved. Legal action will follow if the allegations are verified.
Woman detained in Pekua for posing as DGFI officer to commit fraud
SM Lablur Rahman, a member (administration) of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), has filed a case alleging that his signature was forged to create a fake contract and consent letter. The case was lodged at the Airport Police Station on Sunday, June 22, and confirmed by Officer-in-Charge Kamrul Hasan Talukder. According to the case statement, the forged contract falsely presented Rahman as the first party and one Fahad Hossain as the second party, promising payment if Hossain were appointed chairman of the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation.
The complaint states that Rahman’s signature was falsified on both the contract and a separate consent document. Rahman said he took legal action to protect his reputation and professional integrity, claiming a group deliberately attempted to defame him. He denied any involvement in unethical activities and urged for a fair investigation to identify those responsible.
Police confirmed that an investigation is underway, including document verification and questioning of relevant individuals to uncover the full circumstances behind the alleged forgery.
CAAB official files police case over forged signature and fake contract allegations
A special team of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police under the Wari Division arrested six professional muggers during an operation in the capital. The arrests took place on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, in the Jatrabari and Sayedabad areas following a tip-off. The detainees were identified as Md. Ismail Hariz (21), Md. Alam (25), Md. Robin (26), Md. Siddiqur Rahman (38), Nashat Khan Nabil (19), and Robiul Islam Mahin (20).
According to DB Wari sources, the arrested individuals had been involved in organized mugging across various parts of Dhaka for a long time. Six professional muggers arrested in Dhaka by DB Wari Division
Shahidul Islam Bhuiyan, father of slain student Farhan Faiyaz, testified before International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Wednesday as the first witness in a case over the killing of nine people, including Faiyaz and Mahmudul Rahman Soikat, during the July uprising in Mohammadpur, Dhaka. He accused former Dhaka South City mayor Fazle Noor Taposh, former minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak, and 26 others of involvement in the attack. In his testimony, he described how his son, a student of Dhaka Residential Model College, was shot dead while participating in a peaceful anti-discrimination student movement on July 18, 2024.
Bhuiyan recounted that police and ruling party activists opened fire on unarmed students, killing his son instantly. He detailed his desperate attempts to reach the hospital, the chaotic scenes there, and the subsequent funeral arrangements amid alleged obstruction by police and ruling party members. He said he identified the accused through social media, video footage, and witness accounts from other students.
He demanded justice and punishment for those he holds responsible for his son’s death, naming 28 individuals in total in his testimony.
Father of slain student testifies, naming 28 accused including Nanak and Taposh
A detainee named Nurul Alam, 45, died less than 15 hours after being taken to Chattogram Central Jail. He was identified as the joint convener of the banned Satykania Upazila unit of the Youth League. Prison authorities said that on Wednesday morning, while in the import ward of the jail, Alam complained of chest pain and breathing difficulties. He was first taken to the prison hospital and then to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
