Medical students in Rangpur blocked roads on Tuesday night demanding the release of a fellow student arrested in connection with a recent death case. The blockade began around 7:30 p.m. in front of the city’s central jail and was lifted at about 9:45 p.m. after police assurances. The protest disrupted road communication between Rangpur and nearby districts including Nilphamari, Dinajpur, Thakurgaon, and Panchagarh.
The incident followed the death of HSC examinee Nuzhat Jahan, who fell from the rooftop of the North View Hotel on Monday evening. Her father filed a case the next day, naming Rangpur Medical College student Shahriar Ahmed Sakin and several others as accused. Students argued that the arrest was made without clear evidence and demanded a transparent investigation.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police’s Crime Division Deputy Commissioner Mahfuzur Rahman confirmed the arrest of Sakin, stating that the investigation into the hotel rooftop death is ongoing.

Police in Sherpur, Bogura arrested Dr. Samir Hossain Mishu, a local leader of the Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad (Swachip) known as the 'doctor of the poor', on Tuesday night. The arrest took place around 11:15 p.m. at Mocktail Island in the Ranbirbala area, where he was attending a birthday celebration as a guest. Police said he was detained in connection with a sabotage case filed at Bogura Sadar Police Station.
According to Sherpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge SM Moinuddin, legal procedures are underway to send him to jail through the court. Dr. Mishu, son of the late Dr. Safdar Hossain of Jaleshwaritala in Bogura town, is a recipient of the Pundra Award and is widely known for providing medical care to the poor.
He previously served as the Health and Family Planning Officer of Sadar Upazila and held leadership positions in both the Bogura district branch of Swachip and the Bangabandhu Parishad. He is currently posted as the Health and Family Planning Officer at Bagerhat (IST) Sadar Upazila.

Police have arrested Sajedul Islam Shuvro, vice chairman of Navana Group, in connection with a labor law case. The arrest took place early Wednesday, June 24, 2026. Law enforcement from Tejgaon Industrial Area and Banani police stations conducted a raid at house number 54 on road 15, block D, in Banani late Tuesday night.
According to police, security guards at the building did not cooperate during the operation, and the driver and bodyguards present behaved disorderly. The arrest warrant was issued by Dhaka’s First Labor Court after Shuvro allegedly failed to pay 2.3 million taka owed to a former official of Aftab Automobiles.
The report did not include any statement from Navana Group or the accused regarding the incident, and further legal proceedings are expected to follow.

The Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) arrested two individuals with 7,000 yaba pills concealed inside a motorcycle engine in Rajendrapur area of Challisha Union, Netrokona Sadar upazila. The operation took place on Tuesday morning along the Netrokona–Mymensingh road, led by Assistant Director Md Nazmul Haque. Acting on a tip-off, the DNC team set up a temporary checkpoint, stopped a suspicious motorcycle, and discovered the drugs hidden in the engine compartment.
The detainees were identified as Md Sohel Mia, 36, and Md Sajib, 24, both from Chirram village in Barhatta upazila. Authorities also seized three mobile phones and the motorcycle used in the operation. The DNC estimated the market value of the seized yaba pills at around 2.8 million taka. Inspector Md Al-Amin filed a case under the Narcotics Control Act at Netrokona Model Police Station.
According to the DNC, the two suspects would be sent to court later in the day. Officials stated that anti-drug operations will continue and emphasized the importance of public cooperation to keep society free from narcotics.

According to police and local sources, the posts made from Dipto’s personal Facebook account quickly spread online, provoking anger among local Muslims. To prevent deterioration of law and order, Tahirpur police took immediate action and detained the accused after verifying the allegations. Officer-in-Charge Md Aminul Islam confirmed the arrest and said legal action had been initiated, with the suspect to be sent to court after due process.
Following the news, local religious leaders and residents condemned the act and demanded exemplary punishment. Police stated they are maintaining constant surveillance to preserve communal harmony and will act strictly against any provocative activities.
Man arrested in Sunamganj for offensive Facebook posts about Islam and Prophet Muhammad
A group of fraudsters has allegedly created a fake WhatsApp account using the name and photo of Mirzapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdullah Al Mamun to demand money from various individuals. The incident has caused concern in the Tangail upazila, prompting police to urge residents to remain alert. The scammers reportedly call people claiming that complaints or cases have been filed against them and then demand money in exchange for resolving the matter.
One victim, Nurul Islam Khan, a resident of Bawar Kumarjani area and an expatriate in Singapore, said he received such a call from a number using the OC’s name and photo. Suspicious of the caller’s behavior, he refused to share any information and later sent screenshots of the number to journalists. Local sources said a similar attempt was made earlier targeting former Mirzapur Press Club president Abul Kashem Khan.
OC Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed receiving complaints about the fake account and said police have begun investigating to identify and arrest those involved. Authorities have advised the public to verify any such calls and avoid financial transactions without confirmation.
Fake WhatsApp account uses Mirzapur OC’s identity to extort money from locals
Police in Rangpur’s Taraganj upazila have arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with the rape and murder of nine-year-old Sanjida Khatun, a second-grade student at a local madrasa kindergarten. The arrest was announced on Tuesday afternoon during a press conference at Taraganj Police Station by Rangpur Superintendent of Police Mohammad Mozammel Haque. Sanjida went missing on June 19 while playing near her home in Bhimpur Quranipara area of Alampur Union. Her body was discovered the next morning beside a jute field near her house.
According to the police, the suspect, Mujahid Islam, was detained from his home in Bhimpur Quranipara around 9:30 p.m. on Monday. Preliminary interrogation and evidence indicated that the child was shown obscene videos before being raped and killed. Police said they are continuing to question the suspect and investigating whether others were involved.
A case has been filed, and the investigation remains ongoing. The incident has cast a shadow of grief over the local community.
Police arrest youth in Taraganj for rape and murder of nine-year-old girl
A Chattogram court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment and an additional 17 years of rigorous imprisonment for abducting and sexually assaulting his sister-in-law. The convict, Fazlul Karim, remains absconding after securing bail, prompting the court to issue arrest and sentence warrants against him.
According to the prosecution, the charges were proven beyond doubt through testimonies from five witnesses and other evidence. The court also imposed fines totaling seven lakh taka, with additional six months of imprisonment for non-payment. The case originated from an incident on October 31, 2022, when Karim allegedly abducted his 17-year-old sister-in-law from Khaja Road in Chandgaon under the pretext of buying her snacks. The victim’s father filed a case with Chandgaon Police Station, and police later submitted a charge sheet.
The trial began on February 2, 2025, following the framing of charges. After a lengthy judicial process, the tribunal delivered its judgment, concluding the case.
Chattogram court gives life term and 17 years to man for abducting sister-in-law
Police in Saghata upazila of Gaibandha have arrested three suspects in connection with the killing of Islami Chhatra Shibir leader Saifullah Bari. The murder case, filed at Saghata Police Station, names six individuals and includes 10 to 15 unidentified persons. The arrested suspects are Ashraf Khondokar, Robiul Islam, and Shah Alam. The arrests were confirmed by Saghata Police Station’s investigation officer Pobitro Kumar on Tuesday evening.
According to police, the named accused include former Jubo Dal convener Mokhlesur Rahman Mukul, his brother Palash, Ashraf Khondokar, BNP member Robiul Islam, Monarul Islam, and ward-level BNP member Shah Alam. Police said one suspect was initially detained on the day of the incident, and based on his information, two more were arrested later that night. Efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects are ongoing.
The murder occurred on June 21 in the Bonarpara Charmatha area of Saghata, where Saifullah Bari was fatally stabbed allegedly by Mukul, his brother Palash, and Ashraf.
Three arrested in Gaibandha over murder of Shibir leader Saifullah Bari
A prominent Islamic scholar, Maulana Qari Md. Abu Raihan, was allegedly beaten and seriously injured in a boundary dispute in Kalibajail village under Deokhola Union of Fulbaria upazila, Mymensingh. The incident occurred on Sunday morning when a long-standing land boundary disagreement between neighbors escalated into violence. According to the complaint, neighbor Mosharraf Hossain attacked Abu Raihan with an iron rod, leaving him critically injured. Police visited the scene on Tuesday and confirmed that legal action is underway, with efforts ongoing to arrest the suspects.
Prominent scholar injured in Mymensingh boundary dispute; police investigating assault case
Sylhet Metropolitan Police conducted a 32-hour special operation aimed at maintaining law and order, controlling crime, and ensuring public safety in the city. During the drive, 63 individuals were arrested for involvement in various offenses, including four activists of the Chhatra League. According to police, those arrested include suspects in regular cases, individuals accused in illegal procession cases, warrant-holders, drug users and dealers, smugglers, and others charged under the metropolitan ordinance. Authorities also recovered illegal goods such as 1,400 pieces of KitKat chocolate, 24 kilograms and six packets of cannabis, and 10 sacks of cumin. In a separate traffic operation, legal action was taken against 151 vehicles, with 77 cases filed and 74 vehicles seized.
Police stated that legal procedures are being completed before presenting the detainees to the court.

A Cumilla court has ordered the return of expelled Islami Chhatra Shibir central leader Jisan Mia to jail after completing a two-day remand in a case filed over rape and forced abortion allegations. The order was issued on Tuesday afternoon by Chief Judicial Magistrate Amli Court-3 Judge Taiyab Uddin Ahmed. The matter was confirmed by Detective Branch Officer-in-Charge Shamsul Alam Shah, who said Jisan was produced before the court following the remand.
According to police, Jisan was arrested after being found unconscious near Laksam Railway Junction on June 12. That night, a woman filed a case naming Jisan as the prime accused and three others for assisting in the alleged rape. Earlier, the court had rejected Jisan’s bail plea and sent him to jail. On Sunday, police sought an eight-day remand, but the court granted two days.
Jisan Mia is the central assistant international secretary of Islami Chhatra Shibir and former president of the organization’s Cumilla West unit. The other three accused in the case are Sekandar Ali, Golam Rabbani, and Sajib Hasan.

One victim reportedly paid over four lakh taka after being promised guaranteed success but failed the June 12 exam, exposing the fraud. Police sought seven days of remand to recover the embezzled funds and identify other members of the fraud group, but the court granted four days.
In a separate case filed by the Bangladesh Bar Council, Nazrul was also shown arrested for allegedly spreading false information about the bar exam through a coaching center in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
Dhaka court remands lawyer four days for Facebook fraud using photos of Jaima Rahman, Adiba
A sand-laden truck fell into a canal after an iron bridge collapsed in Lalmohan upazila of Bhola on Tuesday, killing the driver, Md. Naim, aged 25. The accident occurred around 12:40 p.m. on the bridge over Betua Canal at the eastern end of Azhar Road in Ramaganj Union. The truck’s helper, Al Amin, aged 12, was seriously injured and later referred for advanced treatment after receiving initial care at Lalmohan Upazila Health Complex.
Witnesses said the bridge collapsed as the truck was crossing from west to east, causing a loud noise before the vehicle plunged into the water. Locals rescued both victims and sent them to the hospital, where doctors declared Naim dead. The bridge is located near the ancestral home of the Speaker of the National Parliament, Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikrom.
Local residents reported that the bridge had been in a risky condition for a long time and that authorities had been informed multiple times without effective action. Police have sent a team to the site, and legal procedures are underway.
