Ten cargo vessels were fined a total of one lakh taka for anchoring idly on the Meghna River and obstructing normal navigation. The fines were imposed on Tuesday through a mobile court led by BIWTA Executive Magistrate Neheru Nigar Tonu, as part of an operation to ensure safe and accident-free river transport.
According to the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), the vessels had anchored in the navigation channel, creating barriers to regular vessel movement. The mobile court was conducted with the participation of officials from the Narayanganj Department of Naval Safety and Traffic Management, the Meghnaghat River Port office, traffic inspectors, and members of the river police, who provided full cooperation during the operation.
The initiative aimed to maintain navigational discipline and prevent accidents on the busy Meghna River route, reinforcing BIWTA’s ongoing efforts to improve river safety and traffic management.

Six police officers, including a sub-inspector of the Detective Branch (DB), have been withdrawn in Habiganj following the escape of a listed drug dealer from police custody in Madhabpur. The incident occurred on June 15 during an anti-drug operation in Debnagar village under Dharmaghar Union, led by DB Sub-Inspector Saiful Islam. The suspect, Jewel Mia, reportedly fled while being handcuffed after a scuffle with police, during which two DB members were injured. Local residents, unaware that the plainclothes officers were police, became involved in the altercation.
On June 17, Superintendent of Police Tarek Mahmud reassigned the six officers to the district police lines citing administrative reasons. The withdrawn officers include DB SI Saiful Islam, three DB constables, and two constables from Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station. Officials have provided differing accounts regarding the presence of the Sadar police members at the scene.
The incident has sparked widespread discussion in Habiganj, with locals questioning whether lack of coordination and unclear police identification contributed to the suspect’s escape.
Six Habiganj police withdrawn after drug suspect escapes during Madhabpur operation
Sub-Inspector Khalilur Rahman testified as the third witness before International Crimes Tribunal-2 regarding the 2015 crossfire killings of two men in Agailjhara, Barishal. The victims were Tipu Hawlader, then joint general secretary of the local Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, and Kabir Molla, organizational secretary of the Jatiyatabadi Social and Cultural Organization. The testimony was given on Tuesday.
In his statement, SI Khalilur Rahman said he was serving in the Barishal Detective Branch between 2013 and October 2016. He recounted that on February 11, 2015, the then Barishal Superintendent of Police instructed him to arrest two suspects under the direction of MP Abul Hasanat Abdullah. Khalilur described how he and other officers arrested the two men from Ashulia and Keraniganj on February 20, 2015, and later learned they had been killed in a crossfire.
The witness also stated that he came to know the killings were allegedly ordered by MP Abul Hasanat Abdullah, who, along with three others, is accused of crimes against humanity in the case.

Testimonies from eight witnesses have been completed in the case against former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed, accused of acquiring over Tk 11 crore in illegal assets. On Tuesday, four witnesses testified before Dhaka’s Special Judge Court-5, presided over by Abdullah Al Mamun. They included officials from the tax, land registration, public works, and Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) offices. Earlier, four other witnesses had testified on May 20, bringing the total to eight. The court has set July 1 for the next hearing.
According to the ACC prosecutor, the trial began after charges were framed on May 3. The case was filed by ACC Deputy Director Hafizul Islam on December 15, 2024, and the charge sheet was submitted on November 30, 2025. Investigations found that Benazir declared assets worth about Tk 12.2 crore but evidence showed ownership of over Tk 15.6 crore, leaving Tk 11 crore unaccounted for.
The ACC has also filed five other cases against Benazir, including two where he is the main accused and three involving his wife and two daughters as co-accused. These cases remain under investigation.

A university student named Al Mahin Hasan, aged 22, died after being electrocuted while changing an IPS electrical connection at his home in Nayangar village under Singhasree Union of Kapasia upazila in Gazipur. The tragic incident occurred early Tuesday morning. Family members rushed him to the nearby Sripur Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
According to family and local sources, Al Mahin was the son of the late Mukhtar Hossain, a retired member of the Bangladesh Police, and the nephew of local Union Parishad member Mizanur Rahman. He was a student at Uttara University. Mizanur Rahman described him as a polite and talented young man whose sudden death caused deep sorrow among relatives and residents of the area.
Following funeral prayers, Al Mahin was buried in the family graveyard. His untimely death has cast a shadow of grief over his family, friends, and the local community.
University student dies from electrocution while fixing IPS connection in Kapasia, Gazipur
Police in Natore have solved the mystery behind a major robbery at Sajid Jute Mill in Sriramgari area of Arjanpur-Bormahati Union under Lalpur upazila. In a joint operation, the district detective branch and Lalpur police arrested six active members of an inter-district robbery gang. Authorities recovered part of the looted goods and several tools used in the crime.
According to police, around 12 to 14 armed robbers entered the mill on May 30 at about 12:30 a.m., assaulted four staff members including a mechanical engineer, and tied them up before looting machinery parts and copper wires worth about 8.36 million taka. The robbers used sharp weapons, iron rods, and a truck to transport the stolen items. Following the incident, the mill owner Sajid Mallik filed a case with Lalpur Police Station.
Acting on intelligence, police conducted raids in different areas of Atgharia and Sadar upazilas of Pabna district, recovering 300 kilograms of copper wire, vehicles used in the robbery, mobile phones, and 50,000 taka in cash. Legal action has been taken against the arrested suspects, while efforts continue to capture the remaining gang members and recover the rest of the stolen goods.

A Project Implementation Officer (PIO) in Debiganj upazila of Panchagarh, Babul Chandra Roy, was withdrawn a day after a video showing him allegedly calculating bribes and commissions went viral. The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief issued a circular on Tuesday stating that he was removed from Debiganj and attached to the Department of Disaster Management. The order instructed him to join his new post by June 24, warning that failure to do so would result in immediate release from his current duties. The circular did not specify the reason for his withdrawal.
The video, lasting about four minutes and forty-seven seconds, reportedly showed Babul Chandra Roy using a calculator to determine commission amounts for various projects under TR, Kabikha, and Kabita allocations. The footage spread widely across social media and news outlets, sparking extensive discussion in different circles.
The ministry’s action followed widespread media coverage of the alleged 15 percent commission demand linked to project allocations in Debiganj.
Debiganj project officer withdrawn after viral video shows alleged bribe dealings
At least three people were killed in a shooting in Montreal, Canada, on Monday, including a police officer, a civilian, and the gunman himself. The attack occurred in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood, a partly Jewish-populated area with kosher markets and restaurants. Police responded around 11:30 a.m. after reports of an active shooter firing from inside a building with a long gun. The gunman was later killed in an exchange of fire with police.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the motive or whether the attack was a hate crime or terrorism-related. French-language public broadcaster Radio-Canada reported that the suspect may have been linked to the so-called “incel” ideology, which has been associated with previous acts of violence in Canada. Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher described the incident as a “tragedy” and a “nightmare.”

A four-year-old girl named Ayesha Khatun was killed after being hit by a van in Bhurungamari upazila of Kurigram district. The accident occurred on Monday evening in Paschim Chat Gopalpur village. Ayesha, daughter of Aminur Rahman, ran onto the road from her home and was struck by a goods-laden van traveling from Dhamerhat Bazar toward Bhurungamari. Family members rescued her in a severely injured condition and took her to Bhurungamari Hospital.
As her condition worsened, doctors at Bhurungamari Hospital referred her to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. However, she died on the way to Rangpur. Tilai Union Parishad Chairman Kamruzzaman confirmed the incident. Bhurungamari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Azim Uddin said he learned about the accident through local village police and that action would be taken if a complaint is filed.
The report did not mention whether the van driver was identified or detained following the incident.
Four-year-old girl dies after van collision in Bhurungamari, Kurigram
Khairul Islam Sajib, son of Narayanganj-3 MP Azharul Islam Mannan, was detained on extortion allegations and released hours later from Detective Branch (DB) custody. He was handed over to his family late Sunday night after signing a bond, confirmed Dhaka Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner (DB) Shafiqul Islam. Sajib had been accused by an industrial group of extortion in Narayanganj, leading to his detention from his Bashundhara residence for questioning.
According to DB sources, Sajib was first held by Narayanganj police and later transferred to Dhaka DB for interrogation. He was expelled from his position as senior joint convener of the Narayanganj district Jubo Dal following his arrest. Officials said there were multiple allegations but no formal case, so he was released on a bond under legal provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code. Anonymous DB officers noted that complainants feared filing a case due to Sajib’s political influence.
Sources added that lobbying for Sajib’s release reached senior police and political levels, with one leader from Cumilla reportedly active in securing his release. The DB later summoned the complainants, who requested police vigilance to prevent future incidents.

A violent mob attack occurred in Boalmari upazila of Faridpur on Monday evening when locals, suspecting a man of drug dealing, beat him and set his private car on fire. The incident took place in the Malikhali Bazar area of Parameshwardi Union. Police later arrived at the scene, brought the situation under control, and rescued the injured man, identified as Mamun Molya, before taking him to the police station.
Mamun’s father, Manik Molya, said his son had returned home after attending a court hearing in a drug case in Faridpur and was on his way to Dhaka when the attack occurred. He claimed no drugs were found on Mamun, and neither locals nor police recovered any. Manik criticized the mob action, saying that punishment should be left to law enforcement and the courts.
Boalmari Police Station’s officer-in-charge confirmed that Mamun has a previous drug-related case but no drugs were recovered during this incident. He added that legal action would be taken if complaints are filed regarding the assault and arson.

Mobarak Hossain Imon, an associate of fugitive Sajjad Ali Khan alias Boro Sajjad, was arrested from a hotel in Dhaka’s Gulshan area on Monday night. The arrest took place around 10:30 p.m. at room 91 of Amari Dhaka, confirmed Chattogram Police Commissioner Hasan Md. Shawkat Ali. Intelligence officials said Imon had been under surveillance for a long time, and his social media activity led to his capture.
According to police, Imon, son of Md. Musa from Kanchannagar in Fatikchhari, is accused in at least seven cases, including a double murder in Baklia on March 30, 2025, and the killing of terrorist Dhakaiya Akbar at Patenga beach on May 23 of the same year. He is known to have handled 15–20 firearms and is considered skilled in weapon use.
Police sources said Imon currently leads Sajjad’s criminal network in Chattogram along with Mohammad Raihan, as former leader Chhoto Sajjad is in jail. The group reportedly includes around 50 shooters and associates who extort money through threats, though police had struggled to locate them until now.

A 20-year-old autorickshaw driver named Yasin Arafat Akash was killed after a speeding bus hit his vehicle in Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram on Monday, June 22, around 11:30 a.m. The accident occurred in the Dakshin Bypass area when a CDM Paribahan bus, bearing registration number Dhaka Metro-B-14-9967, struck the autorickshaw. Akash, the eldest son of Md. Ibrahim from Mirerhat in Syedpur union, was taken to Sitakunda Upazila Health Complex and later referred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, but he died in the ambulance on the way.
According to family sources, Akash had left school early to support his family by driving an autorickshaw. Witnesses said the bus was moving at high speed when it hit the autorickshaw as Akash tried to turn it. Police arrived at the scene, recovered the injured driver with local help, and later confirmed his death.
Kumira Highway Police Officer-in-Charge Nurul Afsar stated that the bus had been seized, the driver detained, and a case filed over the incident.

Two arrested, including acting principal, in Ramganj school student murder case
Five bodies have been recovered following a violent spear clash between two rival groups in Nilaksha Union of Raipura upazila, Narsingdi. The conflict erupted early Tuesday between groups led by Nazim Uddin alias Mister and Alal Munshi alias Joba Member over local dominance. The fighting, involving spears, homemade weapons, and firearms, continued for several hours, leaving multiple houses vandalized and set on fire.
The deceased were identified as Anik Mia, Kawsar Ahmed, Latif Molla, Mostafa Mia, and Bulbul. Bodies were recovered from different locations along the Meghna River over several days, while Mostafa Mia died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital after five days in intensive care. Police confirmed that Bulbul’s body was the latest to be found floating in the river near Araihazar, Narayanganj.
Two murder cases have been filed at Raipura Police Station in connection with the killings, naming several suspects and many unidentified individuals. However, no arrests have been made so far, according to police.
