Police detained former Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sabbir Bin Shams, on Saturday afternoon while he was allegedly entering Bangladesh illegally through the Dahagram border in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat district. Authorities reported seizing seven passports from his possession during the arrest.

According to police and local sources, Sabbir Bin Shams previously served as Director General of the Foreign Ministry under the Awami League government on a three-year contractual appointment and also held the position of Minister at the Bangladesh High Commission in the United Kingdom. District police stated that he is facing a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and that he crossed the border unlawfully from India.

Following his detention, local residents alerted police, who then handed him over to the Lalmonirhat District Detective Branch. Police confirmed that legal proceedings against the former official are currently underway.

Police have arrested Dr. Hasibur Rashid, former vice-chancellor of Begum Rokeya University (BRU), who was sentenced to ten years in prison in connection with the murder of BRU student Abu Sayeed. He was detained on Saturday night in the Mohammadpur area of Dhaka, confirmed Jewel Rana, Additional Deputy Commissioner of the Mohammadpur Zone of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. Legal proceedings following the arrest are currently underway.

On April 9, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced Dr. Hasibur Rashid to ten years of rigorous imprisonment for crimes against humanity related to the killing of student Abu Sayeed. In the same verdict, the tribunal handed down death sentences to two former police officers, Amir Hossain and Sujon Chandra Roy, and life imprisonment to three others. The remaining 25 accused received varying prison terms.

The arrest marks a continuation of the enforcement of the tribunal’s verdicts in the Abu Sayeed murder case, which involved multiple defendants and varying levels of punishment.

Indian media reported a tragic incident in Gujarat’s Morbi district where a man allegedly handed over his wife and underage daughter to their landlord for sexual exploitation after failing to pay rent. The man reportedly agreed to this act in exchange for 2,000 rupees. Police have arrested both the man and the landlord following the complaint.

According to authorities, the family had moved from Surendranagar to Morbi about six months earlier in search of livelihood and rented a house for 2,000 rupees per month. Due to severe financial hardship, they had been unable to pay rent for four months. The man then reached a deal with the landlord to settle the dues through the exploitation of his wife and daughter.

Police said the victim’s grandmother filed a complaint at Morbi police station, leading to charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and other relevant laws. A third suspect is being sought in connection with the crime.

Police have recovered the body of Forkan Molla, the main accused in the Gazipur five-murder case, from the Padma River near Louhajong’s Mawa area. The recovery was confirmed on Saturday afternoon by Md. Elias, in-charge of the Mawa River Police Outpost. According to Kapasia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Shahinur Rahman, the body was found floating in the river on Saturday morning and later sent to Munshiganj General Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Investigating officer Md. Jubayer Ahmed was dispatched to the scene after the discovery. Based on the clothing and statements from family members, police suspect the body to be that of Forkan Molla. His brother Jabbar identified the body by its black pants and white shirt. Authorities stated that final confirmation will come after post-mortem and DNA test results.

Earlier, on the night of May 8, five bodies were recovered from a rented house in Rautkona village of Kapasia upazila, belonging to expatriate Monir Hossain. The victims were Forkan’s wife Sharmin, daughters Mim (15), Umme Habiba (8), Faria (2), and brother-in-law Rasul Mia.

Armed robbers looted Tk 3.5 million from peanut traders by holding them hostage on the Meghna River in Ashuganj upazila of Brahmanbaria on Saturday morning. The incident occurred around 6 a.m. in the Charchartala area when traders from NM Brothers, a peanut business based in Bhairab, were traveling by boat toward Baishmouja market in Nabinagar. The robbers attacked from another boat, seized the money, and fled the scene. Naval police later reached the spot by speedboat and rescued the traders.

According to Shamim Ahmed, one of the directors of NM Brothers, the Baishmouja market operates twice a week during the April–June peanut trading season. Fifteen people were on the traders’ boat when six robbers boarded it for about ten minutes, looted the cash, and disabled the boat’s engine before escaping. Bhairab Naval Police Officer-in-Charge Moniruzzaman Chowdhury stated that the case falls under another police station’s jurisdiction, but his team has also launched an operation to catch the robbers.

Police are preparing a case in the relevant jurisdiction and have begun efforts to identify and arrest the culprits.

A union council member from Ward 8 of Madhabpasha Union in Babuganj upazila, Barishal, has been accused of forcibly occupying land belonging to a local family. The affected family filed an eviction case in the district magistrate court, which ordered an on-site investigation. According to case documents, about 25 decimals of land from a four-acre property owned by the heirs of Abdul Majed Shikdar were allegedly occupied by union member Md. Bashir Shikdar and his associates.

Complainant Anwar Hossain Sajal stated that several local arbitration attempts failed and that the accused side allegedly issued threats. Following the court’s directive, the land office began an investigation, but the accused reportedly avoided discussions. The court instructed the Babuganj Assistant Commissioner (Land) to submit an investigation report by May 21.

The land office scheduled a site visit and discussion for May 15, but the accused member did not attend. The local Kanungo confirmed that the investigation is ongoing. Bashir Shikdar denied the allegations, citing illness and the absence of a surveyor, and claimed the accusations were motivated.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) detained three passengers arriving from Bangladesh at Toronto Pearson International Airport after discovering over 45 kilograms of meat, dairy products, and vegetables in their luggage. The items were detected by three Labrador sniffer dogs named Dharla, Olga, and Theo. Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has revealed that housewife Nazma Akter was murdered in Bahubal upazila of Habiganj to falsely implicate her sister’s brother-in-law, Torab Ali. According to investigators, Abdul Gani, brother of Nazma’s co-wife, planned the killing to take revenge in a long-standing dispute with Torab Ali and relative Selim Mia. Nazma’s body was recovered on October 20, 2025, from a bamboo grove near her home in Kazihata village. Her daughter Nargis Akter later filed a case accusing ten people, including Torab Ali, but PBI found that Abdul Gani had orchestrated the case and manipulated the accusations.

Inspector Rajib Kumar Das of PBI said the case took a new turn after the arrest of accused number nine, Abdun Nur, who claimed he was implicated only because he witnessed the murder. Further investigation led to Abdul Gani’s arrest, though he was later released on bail with Nargis’s support. Investigators also found that Nargis later married Abdul Gani’s son and began defending her father-in-law.

PBI reported that Nazma’s body showed signs of neck injuries and wet clothing, suggesting attempts to wash the body after the killing. The investigation is nearing completion, and a charge sheet will be submitted soon.

Police in Feni recovered the hanging body of a woman named Jannatul Mawa, wife of an expatriate, on Saturday from the Ilashpur area of Panchgachia Union in Sadar upazila. The body was found inside a house, and authorities have sent it to Feni General Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.

According to the victim’s family, the incident was not a suicide but a planned murder. They alleged that following a quarrel with her sister-in-law earlier in the morning, Jannatul Mawa was killed and later hung inside the house to make it appear as suicide. Police have not yet released further details about the investigation or possible suspects.

Police have arrested Lion Niloy Parvez from Dhaka’s Vatara area for allegedly posting a series of offensive and defamatory Facebook posts about Abul Hossain Khan, the Member of Parliament for Barishal-6 (Bakerganj) and district BNP convener. The arrest took place on Saturday following a complaint that Niloy had repeatedly shared obscene and derogatory remarks, photos, and videos about the MP from his personal Facebook account.

According to police, the posts contained objectionable captions that spread widely across social media. In response, Padreeshibpur Union BNP president Faruk Mridha filed a case under the Cyber Security Act with the Barishal Cyber Tribunal, naming Niloy as the accused. The court accepted the case and directed Bakerganj police to take necessary action.

Bakerganj Police Officer-in-Charge Adil Hossain confirmed that the case was filed under court order and that Niloy was arrested as a named accused. He added that further details would be disclosed after completion of legal procedures.

At least 25 people were injured when two passenger buses carrying garment workers collided head-on in Dhamrai, Dhaka, on Saturday morning. The accident occurred around 8 a.m. in front of the Incepta Pharmaceuticals factory on the Dhaka-Aricha highway in the Baribaria area. The collision caused severe damage to the front sections of both buses and led to a major traffic jam that lasted about two hours until the vehicles were removed from the road.

According to local sources, a Padma Paribahan bus traveling from Dhaka to Manikganj collided with a Swopno Paribahan bus coming from the opposite direction. Fire service units arrived quickly, rescuing the injured with help from locals and sending them to Manikganj Hospital and nearby clinics. A college lecturer has been arrested in Rangpur’s Kaunia upazila on charges of embezzlement and fraud involving a Hajj agency. Police detained Mohammad Ali Babu, a lecturer at Mirbag College and son of Abul Hossain from Gadadhar area, during a special operation on Friday night. Authorities confirmed that five arrest warrants had been issued against him, including two general register (GR) and three complaint register (CR) cases.

According to police sources, two of the cases accuse him of embezzling around 15 million taka, while the amounts in the other three cases remain undisclosed. On April 11, 2026, eight teachers and 163 children from Bihar traveling by Patna–Pune Express to a madrasa in Maharashtra were forcibly deboarded at Katni railway station in Madhya Pradesh. In Feni, an accused named Saiful Islam confessed in court to killing Rina Akter, the wife of an expatriate, during a robbery attempt. The confession was recorded on Friday afternoon under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code before Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Morshed Mahmud Khan. Saiful, aged 29, was arrested in Chattogram’s Nasirabad area on Thursday after fleeing the scene and turning off his phone following the murder.

According to the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), Saiful worked at the under-construction building owned by Rina’s husband, expatriate Mohammad Manik. In his statement, Saiful said he was under financial pressure after failing to repay an NGO loan. On May 12, when Rina visited the site, he tried to snatch her gold earrings, strangling her in the process and burying the body under sand inside the building. He later sold the earrings for Tk 15,500 and used the money to buy drugs.

Police said Saiful was sent to Feni District Jail after his confession. The investigation continues under PBI supervision.

A 70-year-old man named Ahmad Dealer was killed by his drug-addicted son in Mirsharai, Chattogram, on Friday night. Police said the incident occurred around 9 p.m. when a dispute broke out between Ahmad Dealer and his son, Ibrahim Hossain Milon, over drug use at their home. During the altercation, Milon allegedly struck his father with a stick, leaving him critically injured. Ahmad Dealer died at the scene before family members could rescue him.

According to police and local sources, Milon had been addicted to drugs for a long time and was reportedly involved in various antisocial activities. Despite repeated warnings from his family, his behavior had become increasingly reckless. Police later detained Milon on charges of killing his father. The body was sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue, and legal proceedings are underway.
