The Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examinations for 2025 begin this Thursday at 10 AM with the Bangla First Paper. A total of 1,251,000 students are registered to take part in the exams, which will continue until August 10. Practical exams will follow. This year, more than 1.05 million candidates are from nine general education boards, over 86,000 from the Alim (Islamic) board, and more than 109,000 from the Technical board. The number of candidates has dropped by 81,882 compared to last year. All coaching centers will remain closed until August 15, according to the Ministry of Education.

An official order from the Ministry of Finance’s Economic Division, issued Monday, states that teachers and staff in MPO-listed private educational institutions, madrasas, and technical institutes, who fall under grade 9 and above equivalent to the national pay scale, will receive a special allowance at a rate of 10% of their basic salary annually starting July 1. Those in grade 10 and below will receive 15% of their basic salary or a minimum of 1,500 BDT annually. This special allowance aims to support educators and staff financially.

A student from the Finance Department of the University of Chittagong (CU) attempted suicide on Thursday after being denied the opportunity to have an exam script re-evaluated.
The incident occurred when the student, disheartened by the lack of response from university authorities, tried to jump from the fifth-floor railing of the administrative building. A university employee intervened just in time and pulled him to safety.
Sources say the student was the only one among 124 candidates in a final exam course to receive a failing grade. He claimed that his performance did not warrant failure and that a re-evaluation by a different examiner would prove he had passed, stating he missed the passing mark by just one point.

Dr. Khan Moinuddin Al Mahmud Sohel, Director of Secondary Education at the Ministry of Education (MauShi), announced that instructions to prevent COVID-19 transmission have already been issued. Schools are preparing accordingly, and parents are urged to ensure their children follow safety measures. He emphasized that given the current situation, there is no option to close schools. Schools are set to reopen this Sunday, and everyone must adhere strictly to COVID-19 preventive guidelines. Earlier, MauShi had issued six directives to combat both COVID-19 and dengue outbreaks.

“There are no objections to operating private schools or kindergartens, but there must be clear regulations on how much they can charge students. Institutions should not be allowed to impose arbitrary fees,” he said. He also stressed that the curriculum and syllabi of such institutions must remain under government oversight to ensure consistency and accountability in education.

Leaders of the Independent Ebtedayee Madrasa Teachers’ Alliance have warned of stern action, including a sit-in protest in front of the National Press Club starting August 17, if the government fails to nationalize independent Ebtedayee madrasas.
Speaking at a discussion held at the National Press Club on Tuesday, the alliance acknowledged the government’s recent proposal to allocate Tk 728 crore in the upcoming budget for Ebtedayee madrasas, extending their appreciation. However, they stressed that teachers have been facing discrimination and deprivation for the past four decades.
They pointed out that despite providing unpaid education for years, the government has yet to grant them fair treatment. The speakers urged the government to initiate the nationalization process by August 15. Failing that, they vowed to launch large-scale protests involving teachers from across the country.

A Chattogram court has ordered the imprisonment of Narayan Chandra Nath, former secretary of the Chattogram Education Board, in connection with a case involving the forgery of his son's SSC examination results.
The court issued the order on Tuesday after rejecting Nath’s bail plea. According to reports, while serving as secretary of the board, Nath’s son, Nakshatra Debnath, sat for the SSC examination in 2023 from a private college. He reportedly obtained a GPA of 5. However, the result raised concerns among several teachers, prompting an investigation.
A probe committee later confirmed that the results were manipulated, leading to legal action against the former secretary.

The Combined Non-MPO Unity Council has issued a three-day ultimatum to the government to include state-recognized institutions under the Monthly Pay Order (MPO) scheme.
