The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has come under scrutiny after falsely claiming that a viral image of an officer pressing his hand over a student’s mouth during protests was generated using artificial intelligence.

The incident occurred Wednesday as BUET students marching towards the Jamuna Bridge clashed with police, facing water cannons and sound grenades. Photographs of the crackdown quickly went viral, drawing widespread outrage.

DMP shared the controversial image on social media, labeling it AI-generated. However, multiple professional photographers, including Rajib Dhar of The Business Standard and Joyita Roy of Bangladesh Pratidin, confirmed capturing the same moment from different angles. Joyita posted her shot on Facebook, saying:
"I took this photograph right when students broke the barricade at Hare Road and police retaliated. Many other journalists recorded it too."

Fact-checker Kaderuddin Shishir has also verified the photo’s authenticity.

Claims of Military Resignations in Gopalganj Incident Proven False

A video circulating on social media claiming to show a body being placed in a police vehicle during the July 16 Gopalganj clashes is fake and misleading. Authorities have confirmed that the footage actually originates from a June 4, 2024, incident in Brahmanbaria, where a mob handed over a mugger to the police after a public beating. The video has no connection to the recent events in Gopalganj. It was traced back to the Facebook page “Praner Brahmanbaria” and a user profile named “Mohammad Sajon,” both of which posted identical, false captions.

Rumor Scanner has uncovered an attempt to influence political opinion using a fake Facebook profile that misused photos of a UAE minister to falsely portray international support for Bangladesh’s ruling party, the Awami League.

The investigation, launched in September last year, focused on a profile named "Tamanna Akter Yasmin." It was found that the account used photos and videos of Reem Al Hashimy, UAE’s Minister of State for International Cooperation, presenting them as if the profile owner were an influential figure lobbying for the Awami League on the global stage.

In reality, the images—often showing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other political figures—were outdated and misleading. After the exposure, the individual behind the profile allegedly created a new account to resume spreading misinformation.

Recent viral social media posts have claimed that Bangladeshi woman Rutba Yasmin is set to become the first Bangladeshi to land on the Moon. However, a Factwatch investigation has debunked these claims as misleading.

Rutba only participated in a three-day simulation workshop called ‘Moon Pioneer Mission,’ organized by Space Nation and led by a former NASA astronaut. It was designed to give participants a realistic space mission experience — but does not involve an actual Moon landing. Factwatch has confirmed that the viral posts are deceptive.

A video circulating online since Saturday claims to show a convoy of Myanmar's Arakan Army mobilizing near the Bangladesh border. However, an investigation by the Rumor Scanner Team has revealed that the footage is not related to recent activity near Bangladesh. In fact, the same video has been online since March, originally linked to tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea. A reverse image search traces the video back to an X (formerly Twitter) account named 'El Druso,' which posted the clip on March 26, indicating that the footage is not connected to the Arakan Army or the Bangladesh-Myanmar border situation.
