Relatives of those killed and injured during the July uprising staged a demonstration outside the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs on Sunday, protesting bail granted to accused perpetrators.

The protesters also demanded the resignation of Legal Adviser and Special Assistant Khoda Bux Chowdhury, accusing him of shielding the culprits.

Speaking under the moderation of Rabiul Hasan, brother of slain protester Imam Hasan Tayim, victims’ families alleged that police attacked them under Chowdhury’s direction when they attempted to demonstrate earlier.

They vowed to continue their movement until justice is delivered. “Killers are still walking free, and now they are being granted bail,” one protester said, citing the release of a police sub-inspector charged in the killings. The group later marched to Hotel Intercontinental, declaring plans for a hunger strike if their demands remain unmet.

A writ petition has been filed in the High Court seeking directives to protect the personal information of female students, including photographs, in the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) voter list.
The petition was filed by lawyer Advocate Fayzullah Fayez on behalf of four students, naming the Education Secretary, Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor, and the Chief Returning Officer of the DUCSU election as respondents.
The petition argues that while publishing male students’ details may not pose significant risks, publicly displaying photographs and personal data of female students has already led to harassment and online misuse. The petitioners claimed their earlier appeals to authorities went unaddressed, prompting the legal move.

The High Court has directed authorities to prepare a comprehensive master plan within three months for the conservation and eco-friendly management of 17 stone quarries in Sylhet and Bandarban.
The directive was issued to the Director General of the Bureau of Mineral Development, the Sylhet Divisional Commissioner, and deputy commissioners of both districts. The court also asked why their negligence should not be declared unconstitutional and against public interest. Additionally, the court questioned why the quarries should not be declared environmentally endangered zones and why illegal stone extraction should not lead to legal actions and compensation.

The National Moon Sighting Committee has announced that the holy Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi (peace be upon him) will be observed across Bangladesh on September 6, as the crescent for the Islamic month of Rabiul Awwal (1447 Hijri) was not sighted on Sunday.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Religious Affairs Secretary AKM Aftab Hossain Pramanik at Baitul Mukarram. As a result, the current month of Safar will complete 30 days, with Rabiul Awwal beginning on August 26.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested popular content creator Touhid Afridi in Barishal in connection with the July killing case.
His arrest comes after the July Revolutionary Alliance had issued an ultimatum on August 17, demanding his detention. The group alleged that Afridi was also linked to funding the Awami League’s campaign activities during August 15 commemorations. In a strongly worded statement, the Alliance warned authorities that “no theatrics will be accepted—Touhid Afridi must be directly arrested.”

A police officer-in-charge (OC) has been withdrawn following the custodial suicide of 27-year-old Durjoy Chowdhury at Chakaria Police Station in Cox’s Bazar.

OC Shafiqul Islam was removed from his post after earlier disciplinary action saw an ASI and two constables transferred to district lines. An inquiry committee headed by Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Jasim Uddin has been formed to investigate the incident.

Meanwhile, Chakaria Government High School headmistress Rabeya Khanam, who had handed Durjoy over to police on allegations of embezzlement, has been made OSD (Officer on Special Duty). The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education has formed a three-member probe committee led by the regional director in Chattogram.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Abhijit Das confirmed that two suicide notes were found in Durjoy’s trouser pocket.

The Bangladesh People’s Coalition for Rohingya Rights has announced a Rohingya Solidarity March on Monday to mark International Rohingya Genocide Day.

The march will begin at Shahbagh at 3 PM and proceed to the Shaheed Minar. Organizers urged global participation, highlighting atrocities including a 2024 drone strike in Rakhine that reportedly killed nearly 200 Rohingya.

Organizer Jihadi Ihsan said, “The world’s oppressed Rohingya are being slaughtered behind the curtains of international silence. We are calling for a global march to raise voices for their freedom and rights.”

The Election Commission has begun hearings on objections to the draft parliamentary boundary demarcations for the 13th National Election.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) said: “We have tried to act professionally and impartially. By law, opportunities for objections have been given, and we have considered your applications. Now, please present rational arguments.”

The EC’s legal wing will issue final rulings after the hearings.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ali Iftekhar Hasan of Mohammadpur Police Station has been transferred to the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

Shah Ali Police OC Md Rafiqul Ahmed will replace him at Mohammadpur, while Mohammad Golam Azam from DMP’s Traffic Division has been reassigned to Mirpur. The orders take immediate effect.

Adviser Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan has called for urgent measures to cut Bangladesh’s road construction costs, which he said are disproportionately higher than neighboring countries.

“Roads have become a hub of corruption,” he stated, suggesting that reducing graft and ensuring accountability among engineers could slash costs by 20–30 percent.

He emphasized reducing dependency on roads by expanding rail, river, and air transport networks. He also called for bypass routes around Dhaka to ease congestion and for adopting new technology to prevent roads from deteriorating yearly.

A photo circulating online allegedly showing Adviser Asif Mahmud with a woman in a hotel room has been confirmed as fake and AI-generated by fact-checking organization Rumor Scanner.

Investigators found that two separate original images had been manipulated using artificial intelligence to produce the fabricated photo. Comparative analysis revealed multiple inconsistencies, such as distorted floral elements in the woman’s hand, pointing to clear AI-related artifacts.

The Election Commission (EC) has begun hearings on appeals regarding the redemarcation of parliamentary constituencies ahead of the 13th National Elections.

Sunday’s session, held at the Election Commission headquarters, focused on 18 constituencies in Comilla, Brahmanbaria, Noakhali, Chandpur, Feni, and Lakshmipur. A total of 811 petitions were submitted—431 objecting to the draft boundaries and 380 in support.

Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, along with other commissioners, is overseeing the proceedings. Strict security measures have been put in place, with hearings scheduled to continue until August 27.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has claimed that unresolved issues relating to the 1971 Liberation War were “settled not once, but twice.” Speaking on the genocide committed in Bangladesh, Dar said apologies had already been issued, first in 1974 and later during then-President Pervez Musharraf’s visit to Dhaka in 2000.

Dar likened disputes between Bangladesh and Pakistan to disagreements within a family, saying Islamic teachings encourage forgiveness and reconciliation. He added, “Pakistan wants to move forward in that spirit.”

After nearly a week in hospital, noted filmmaker and adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki returned home on Saturday afternoon following a successful recovery. His daughter Ilham expressed her joy at reuniting with her father after days of absence, a moment captured and shared by his wife, actress Nusrat Imrose Tisha.

Farooki had traveled to Cox’s Bazar on August 15 for a four-day visit. However, he fell ill the following evening and was flown back to Dhaka urgently by air ambulance. Doctors later performed an appendix surgery, after which he has been gradually recovering.

The seventh day of witness testimony in the war crimes case against ousted leader Sheikh Hasina, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and one other accused is scheduled for Sunday. Testimony will be heard at the International Crimes Tribunal-1, led by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Mozumdar.

On this day, prosecution witness-turned-informant, Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, was presented before the tribunal. Additionally, former army officer Ziaul Ahsan was produced in connection with a separate abduction case, while former minister Farhad Hossain was brought forward in another case.
