Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has strongly condemned a terrorist attack on professional journalists from Dhaka that occurred in front of Dream Holiday Park in Narsingdi. The party’s Assistant Secretary General and head of its central publicity and media division, Advocate Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair, issued a statement on Monday night expressing the condemnation. According to the statement, on the evening of January 26, members of the Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB) were preparing to return from a family picnic when local assailants demanded extortion money. After the journalists protested, an altercation ensued, leading the attackers to assault them with local weapons, injuring ten people including journalists Mohsin Kabir, Mohammad Shahed, S M Foyez, and CRAB staff Lal.
In the statement, Zubair described the attack as a heinous and barbaric act aimed at silencing journalists and undermining press freedom. He demanded the immediate identification and arrest of those involved and called for exemplary punishment. He also urged authorities to ensure proper medical treatment and security for the injured journalists.
Jamaat-e-Islami condemns attack on journalists in Narsingdi over extortion demand
Four students from Stamford University Bangladesh were allegedly robbed at knifepoint inside Dhaka’s Suhrawardy Udyan on the night of January 25. The victims said they were forced to sit by a group of youths who demanded their university identity, assaulted them, and took a total of Tk 30,000 in cash and mobile money. One student was stabbed, sustaining injuries to his face, while others were beaten with tree branches. CCTV footage later showed Dhaka University student and Chhatra Dal leader Arif Faisal collecting Tk 15,000 from a mobile money agent linked to the stolen funds.
Arif Faisal, a student of the Communication Disorder department and a coordinator for the Chhatra Dal’s election committee in Dinajpur-3 constituency, admitted receiving the money when questioned by Amader Desh but claimed he was unaware of the full incident at the time. He said the matter was later “resolved” with the victims. University authorities stated they had not yet received a formal complaint, and the Chhatra Dal president said anyone involved in robbery should be handed over to police.
Faisal has since gone missing from his dormitory, and attempts to contact him by phone have failed.
DU Chhatra Dal leader accused of robbing four Stamford students at knifepoint in Suhrawardy Udyan
A group of armed assailants attacked a picnic bus carrying members of the Bangladesh Crime Reporters Association (CRAB) in front of Dream Holiday Park in Madhabdi, Narsingdi, on Monday, January 26. The attackers demanded extortion money and, after being refused, launched a sudden assault, injuring about ten journalists, six of them seriously. The incident occurred as the journalists and their families were returning to Dhaka after celebrating CRAB’s annual Family Day. Police later detained two suspects involved in the attack.
According to the injured CRAB members, around 300 journalists and their families had traveled from Dhaka’s Segunbagicha to the park earlier that morning. When they boarded their buses to return, local miscreants blocked several vehicles and demanded money. The attackers, reportedly intoxicated and armed with rods, threatened to set the buses on fire and used abusive language. The sudden violence created panic among women and children on board.
Police intervention prevented further escalation, but the incident left several journalists injured and raised concerns about safety during public gatherings.
Extortionists attack CRAB journalists’ picnic bus in Narsingdi, injuring ten
A BNP leader named Nurul Islam Sardar has been accused of threatening market owners in Narayanganj city to take control of a market built on leased government land. The allegation was filed by Moazzem Hossain on behalf of the market owners through a general diary at Narayanganj Sadar Police Station on Sunday night. The market, located in the Charargop area, was constructed on land leased from the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority and is managed by the Baitus Salat (Mosque) Cooperative Shopping Society Limited.
According to the complaint, Nurul Islam Sardar and several associates had been attempting to seize the market, prompting a court case earlier. Following a petition on August 19, the Additional District Magistrate instructed police to maintain peace on the disputed property. Despite this, the complainant alleged that threats continued, including one on January 24. Attempts to contact the accused leader by phone were unsuccessful.
Narayanganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Abdul Halim stated that both parties have since reached a settlement and no further complaints remain.
BNP leader accused of threatening market owners over leased land in Narayanganj
Police in Rajbari arrested five individuals on Sunday afternoon for allegedly attempting to create disorder by chanting slogans in the district and sessions judge court premises. The arrests were made later that night during raids in different areas of Rajbari Sadar upazila. The detainees were identified as Sajjat Hossain, Parash Ali Sheikh alias Shanto, Jony Sheikh, Toufik Ahmed Tahim, and Md. Munjil Sheikh.
According to police sources, the incident occurred when Rajbari District Chhatra League president Md. Shahin Sheikh, an accused in a case related to an attack on anti-discrimination student activists, appeared in court. Some of his followers reportedly chanted slogans demanding his release. Rajbari Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ziaur Rahman stated that the youths tried to cause unrest in the court area and were arrested based on investigation findings.
The five accused were sent to court on Monday following their arrest, police confirmed.
Five arrested in Rajbari court area for disorderly conduct after chanting slogans
Sub-Inspector Nazmul of Madhabpur Police Station in Hobiganj has been accused of detaining innocent people without warrants, subjecting them to abuse, and extorting money. A written complaint was filed on January 20 to the Hobiganj Superintendent of Police and on January 25 to the Sylhet Range DIG by Mosharaf Mia of Alekpur village, alleging that his brother Kamrul Hasan was unlawfully detained for 14 hours on January 17. Nazmul allegedly seized Kamrul’s belongings, threatened to implicate him in serious cases, and demanded money for his release.
The complaint states that Mosharaf paid Tk 50,000 but Nazmul demanded an additional Tk 30,000, later sending Kamrul to court as a suspect in an old case when the demand was not met. Nazmul denied taking money, saying Kamrul was sent to court properly. Investigations revealed similar incidents involving other locals, including journalist Farash Uddin and Abu Al Murshed Rubel, who were allegedly detained without warrants.
Hobiganj Superintendent of Police Mosammat Yasmin Khatun confirmed that an investigation into Nazmul’s alleged misconduct and extortion is ongoing and a decision will be made soon.
Hobiganj police officer accused of detaining and extorting innocent people without warrants
Two houses belonging to Jubo Dal leaders were attacked and set on fire in Sarishabari upazila of Jamalpur early Monday. The incident occurred around 3 a.m. on Sunday night, January 25, in Doyail village of Doyail Union, when unidentified miscreants threw kerosene-filled bottles at the homes of Md. Liton Mia, a member of the union Jubo Dal, and Md. Wasim Munshi, president of the 9th Ward Jubo Dal. The attackers also vandalized the fence of Liton’s house before fleeing. Police from Sarishabari station visited the scene shortly after receiving the report.
According to Officer-in-Charge Md. Bacchu Mia of Sarishabari Police Station, initial investigation suggests that the attack may have stemmed from previous enmity. He added that preparations are underway to file a formal complaint, and legal procedures are in progress.
Police are continuing their inquiry into the incident, but no arrests or further details were reported at the time of publication.
Unidentified attackers set fire to homes of two Jubo Dal leaders in Jamalpur
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) reported seizing smuggled goods, weapons, ammunition, and narcotics worth Tk 1,908.28 crore across the country in 2025. The force also arrested 7,492 individuals from India and Myanmar for illegal border crossings, according to a press release issued on Monday by BGB’s Public Relations Officer Md Shariful Islam.
The seized items included 60 kilograms of gold, 168 kilograms of silver, and large quantities of textiles such as saris, three-piece sets, and ready-made garments. Essential goods like sugar, onions, and cumin were also recovered, along with fireworks, cosmetics, and 1,708 vehicles. BGB confiscated 64 pistols, 10 rifles, 3 revolvers, 19 hand grenades, 79 hand bombs, and over 73,000 lead bullets. Under the government’s zero-tolerance policy on drugs, the force seized more than 14.7 million yaba tablets, crystal meth, phensedyl, heroin, cocaine, and illegal liquor.
BGB detained 2,334 people for involvement in smuggling and drug trafficking and stated that its strict operations to secure borders and prevent smuggling will continue nationwide.

A Dhaka court has granted a four-day remand for Syed Sohanur Rahman Siam, son of former PSC chairman’s driver Syed Abed Ali, in connection with a question leak case. The order was issued on Monday by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Faiz. Siam, who was already in jail, was produced before the court for the remand hearing. Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) prosecutor Tarikul Islam argued in favor of the remand, while the defense sought its cancellation. After hearing both sides, the court approved the remand.
Earlier, on Thursday, ACC Assistant Director Al Amin had shown Siam arrested and sought a seven-day remand, with the hearing scheduled for January 26. On January 5, the ACC filed three cases against Abed Ali, his wife Shahreen Akter Shilpi, and their son Siam. The cases allege suspicious transactions totaling over Tk 41 crore across 12 bank accounts and the acquisition of unexplained wealth by all three family members.
The ACC also accused Siam, a Chhatra League leader, of possessing Tk 3.3 crore in unexplained assets.
Dhaka court orders four-day remand for Syed Sohanur Rahman Siam in question leak case
A Dhaka court has ordered the seizure of 148 decimals of land and two flats owned by Shahreen Akter Shilpi, wife of Syed Abed Ali, the former driver of a former Public Service Commission chairman, in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) over alleged illegal wealth. The court also froze her car worth Tk 3.3 million and four bank accounts. The order was issued on Monday by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Faiz, following a petition from ACC Deputy Assistant Director Zakir Hossain.
According to the case, the ACC alleged that Shilpi acquired Tk 12.66 million in unexplained wealth and conducted suspicious transactions totaling Tk 35.64 million through two bank accounts. Her husband, Abed Ali, is accused of possessing Tk 37.29 million in illegal assets and making suspicious transactions worth Tk 412.9 million through 12 bank accounts. Their son, Syed Sohanur Rahman Siam, faces similar allegations involving Tk 33 million.
The court’s order aims to prevent the transfer of the assets during the ongoing investigation into the family’s alleged accumulation of wealth beyond known income sources.
Dhaka court seizes land, flats and bank accounts of ex-PSC driver’s wife in ACC graft case
Police in Kishoreganj upazila of Nilphamari sent six online casino gamblers to jail on Monday afternoon following their arrest on Sunday evening. The arrests took place in Mushrut Paniyal Pukur Balapara village, where officers seized Android mobile phones containing casino gaming apps from each suspect. The detainees were identified as Rakib Mia, Nur Hossain, Riju Islam Ratul, Shahin Alam, Abdul Aziz, and Manik Mia, all residents of the local area.
Officer-in-Charge Lutfor Rahman of Kishoreganj Police Station stated that the detainees were sent to jail through the court in a case filed under the Cyber Security Act for engaging in online casino gambling. The police action highlights enforcement efforts against illegal online gambling activities in the region.
The case marks a continuation of local authorities’ attempts to curb cyber-related offenses, with the seized devices expected to serve as evidence in the ongoing legal process.
Six arrested in Kishoreganj for online casino gambling sent to jail under Cyber Security Act
Police in Gobindaganj, Gaibandha arrested six Awami League leaders following an attack on officers during an operation to detain former union parishad chairman and local Awami League publicity secretary Zobayer Hasan Shafik Mahmud Golap. The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday when police surrounded Golap’s residence to execute the arrest. Supporters of Golap, numbering about 50 to 60, allegedly launched a sudden assault on the police, injuring three officers who were later hospitalized at Gobindaganj Upazila Health Complex.
Following the attack, Sub-Inspector Akhtaruzzaman filed a case naming 18 individuals and including 50 to 60 unidentified persons. Police subsequently conducted a night raid and detained six named suspects from the area. Officer-in-Charge Mozammel Haque confirmed that the detainees were sent to district jail through the court on Monday. Authorities stated that the law and order situation in the area remains stable, with continued police surveillance to prevent further unrest.
Six Awami League leaders held after police attacked during raid in Gobindaganj
Students of the Al-Quran and Islamic Studies Department at Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia staged a human chain on Monday, January 26, demanding the arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible for the murder of student Sajid Abdullah. The protest took place at noon in front of the university’s administration building, marking six months and nine days since the killing. Leaders from the university’s student wings, including the Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir, joined the demonstration in solidarity.

IU students protest again demanding justice for Sajid Abdullah’s murder after six months
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of Bangladesh has summoned Summit Group chairman Mohammad Aziz Khan, his wife Anjuman Aziz Khan, daughter Ayesha Aziz, and 13 other family members for questioning over alleged money laundering. The summons, issued from the ACC headquarters in Segunbagicha, Dhaka, requires their appearance on January 29 and February 1–4. ACC Deputy Director (Public Relations) Md. Akterul Islam confirmed the notice.
According to the ACC, the allegations involve the laundering of large sums, including Tk 226 crore against Aziz Khan, Tk 32 crore against Anjuman Aziz Khan, and Tk 219 crore against Ayesha Aziz. A seven-member team led by Deputy Director Md. Alomgir Hossain is conducting the investigation. Earlier, on December 14, the ACC had issued separate notices to the family to submit wealth statements for verifying about Tk 711 crore in allegedly illegal assets.
The ACC stated that the declared assets in income tax records appear inconsistent with actual holdings and income sources, prompting the inquiry under Section 26(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) conducted a special operation titled 'Operation Devil Hunt Phase-2' across ten police stations in the capital, arresting 20 individuals. The operation took place on Monday, according to DMP’s Media and Public Relations Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman, who confirmed the arrests. The initiative aimed to enhance public safety in Dhaka through coordinated law enforcement actions.
According to DMP sources, the arrests were made in Sutrapur, Mohammadpur, Khilgaon, Hazaribagh, Adabor, Kalabagan, Jatrabari, Dakshinkhan, Shahbagh, and Banani police station areas. Each station carried out searches in crime-prone and sensitive zones within its jurisdiction. The detainees have been sent to court following legal procedures.
The DMP stated that such operations will continue as part of ongoing efforts to ensure public security and maintain law and order in the capital.
