Public anxiety is mounting across Bangladesh as violent crimes, including murders, rapes, robberies, and abductions, continue to rise. Reports indicate that criminal incidents have increased in Dhaka and other regions, with social media videos showing mob justice and attacks on police. The situation worsened after the August 2024 mass uprising, which left law enforcement weakened. Despite hopes for improvement under a political government, killings and violent crimes have persisted, and over 1,300 looted police weapons remain unrecovered.

Police officials say motivational training and logistical upgrades, including new patrol vehicles, are underway to restore confidence and operational strength. Crime experts warn that delayed justice and political interference are enabling offenders. Data from police and rights groups show hundreds of killings, assaults, and sexual violence cases in recent months, highlighting a deepening crisis in public safety.

Authorities fear that unless the missing weapons are recovered and police capacity strengthened, the law and order situation could deteriorate further, intensifying public insecurity.

Rear Admiral Md Ziaul Haq, Director General of the Bangladesh Coast Guard, stated that the force remains firmly committed to combating piracy, drug and human trafficking, and ensuring the overall security of coastal communities in the Sundarbans. He made the remarks on Thursday afternoon after inspecting the region’s security situation.

According to Ziaul Haq, under government directives, the Coast Guard is leading two special operations—‘Operation Restore Peace in Sundarbans’ and ‘Operation Mangrove Shield’—to establish law and order and eradicate forest piracy. Continuous operations, intelligence efforts, and coordination with other law enforcement agencies have cornered pirate groups, leading to the recent surrender of notorious bandit Chhoto Suman and his associates.

He added that the establishment of the Coast Guard Station Harbaria in Joymonir Ghol, previously known as a pirate stronghold, has effectively disrupted the supply of logistics, weapons, and other support to criminal groups. Ziaul Haq condemned a recent attack and vandalism at the Harbaria station, calling it a regrettable and alarming attempt to undermine security operations, and said immediate action was taken afterward.

Students of Khulna University staged a protest on June 18, 2026, demanding strict punishment for Professor Dr. Md. Rezaul Islam of the Agrotechnology Discipline, who faces allegations of sexual harassment. The demonstration, held at Hadi Chattar under the banner of general students of the discipline, included participants from various departments. A Dhaka court has ordered the imprisonment of former Somoy Television managing director Ahmed Zobaer after rejecting his bail plea in a fraud case. The order was issued on Thursday by Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman following a hearing. Three other accused—Ahmed Rafid Kader Rivu, Sheikh Mahmud Yasin, and Sani Chowdhury—were granted bail. The case involves allegations of fraud, breach of trust, and document forgery against six individuals, including Zobaer, his wife Shamima Sultana Chowdhury, and their daughter Saraf Nawar Joyita.

According to the case details, the court had earlier issued summons on May 10, directing the accused to appear by June 17. When they failed to do so, arrest warrants were issued. During the surrender hearing, defense lawyer Farhad Hossain argued that the case was false and motivated by a dispute over ownership and management of Somoy Media Limited. The defense maintained that there was no evidence of fraud or embezzlement and assured full cooperation with the investigation.

Following the hearing, the court denied Zobaer’s bail but allowed bail for the other three defendants who appeared before it.
