Several journalists were attacked by activists of the Dhaka University unit of Chhatra Dal in front of Shahbagh Police Station on Thursday evening, April 23, 2026. The Dhaka University Journalists’ Association reported that at least ten of its members were injured and demanded the immediate arrest and academic expulsion of those responsible. Police have not yet issued an official statement on the incident.

Ten journalists injured in alleged Chhatra Dal attack near Shahbagh police station

One victim claimed the attack happened in the presence of a house tutor, who did not ensure their safety.
Chhatra Dal leaders later visited the journalists’ association office to apologize, calling the incidents a misunderstanding. The association’s general secretary urged organizational and legal action against those involved.
Six Dhaka University journalists harassed by Chhatra Dal activists during campus unrest
In Mirsharai, Chattogram, protesters blocked the Baraiyarhat–Khagrachhari road for about two hours on Thursday following the death of a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader. Shahriar Ahmed Hridoy, 26, the organizational secretary of the Korerhat Union JCD, died at Chattogram Medical College Hospital after five days of treatment in the ICU. His uncle Nazmul Hossain confirmed the death.
The conflict began on April 18 at Koila Bazar over the detention of a cattle truck allegedly linked to BNP leaders Md Tipu and Abdur Rahim. Local Jubo Dal leader Sabuj and his associates reportedly demanded extortion money from the truck operators. When they refused, driver Suman was beaten. Later, Hridoy and another man, Anwar Hossain, were sent to the scene and were attacked shortly after arriving. Hridoy was critically injured and later died.
Hridoy’s father, Abdul Alim, alleged that his son was killed in a planned attack. Police said a case has been filed and operations are underway to arrest those involved. The situation is currently under control.
JCD leader’s death sparks two-hour road blockade in Mirsharai
Two rival teenage gangs clashed violently in Tongi’s East Arichpur Bou Bazar area of Gazipur early Wednesday, engaging in several rounds of blank gunfire and detonating around 20 to 25 crude bombs. The confrontation, which took place between 3:30 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., stemmed from disputes over territorial dominance, drug trade control, and gang leadership.
Residents reported that the conflict involved groups led by Ariful Islam Rappi, also known as Pistol Bappi, and Sabuj, known as Vadaimma Sabuj. Both sides, comprising about 40 to 50 teenage members armed with firearms, machetes, samurai swords, hockey sticks, and iron rods, chased and attacked each other, spreading panic across several nearby neighborhoods including Rupbaner Tek, Tongi Rail Bridge, and Mirashpara.
According to Tongi East Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Mehedi Hasan, police were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports of the violence. He said the incident is under investigation and that appropriate action will be taken following the inquiry.
Teen gangs clash with gunfire and explosions in Tongi over control dispute
A local BNP leader in Comilla’s Brahmanpara upazila has been expelled from the party after being arrested with 600 yaba tablets. The expulsion was confirmed on Thursday through a press release by Hedayetullah Sardar, office secretary of the Brahmanpara upazila BNP. The arrested leader, identified as Sona Mia alias Ismail, served as the publicity secretary of the Brahmanpara Sadar Union BNP.
Police said the arrest took place on Wednesday afternoon following a tip-off. A team led by Officer-in-Charge Md Faruk Hossain raided Sona Mia’s residence in Dhanyadaul village and recovered the yaba tablets. He was subsequently detained and charged under the Narcotics Control Act before being sent to court.
Brahmanpara upazila BNP joint general secretary Nazrul Islam stated that the party had no prior knowledge of Sona Mia’s involvement in drug trade and reaffirmed that drug dealers have no place in the BNP. Police said special drives against narcotics will continue in the area.
BNP expels Brahmanpara leader after arrest with 600 yaba tablets in Comilla
A man allegedly killed his seven-month-old son by drowning him in a pond in the Manikdi Purbo Kanda area of Gajaria Union under Bhairab upazila in Kishoreganj. The accused, identified as 24-year-old Meraj Mia, reportedly threw his son Tanvir, also known as Mojahid, into the water. Police recovered the child’s partially decomposed body on Thursday afternoon after being informed by locals. Meraj and his mother, Rabeya Begum, have been missing since the incident, according to Bhairab Police Station Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam.
Local and police sources said Meraj, son of the late Felu Mia, married Taslima Begum three years ago. The couple had a son seven months ago. Meraj was known to be drug-addicted and often quarreled with his family over money for drugs. After being expelled from his home, he lived with his in-laws. About a week ago, the child’s grandmother took the baby away, claiming she would take him to a doctor. Three days later, Meraj told relatives he had sold the child. Police later pressured him to return the baby, and he admitted to throwing the child into a pond.
Police are continuing efforts to locate and arrest Meraj and his mother.
Drug-addicted father accused of killing infant son by drowning in Bhairab, Kishoreganj
A court in Ullapara, Sirajganj, has sentenced a man named Faridul Islam to 10 years in prison for involvement in the buying and selling of counterfeit currency. The Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-3, presided over by Judge Nazrul Islam, delivered the verdict on Thursday afternoon. The court also imposed a fine of 20,000 taka, with an additional one-year imprisonment in default of payment. According to the Additional Public Prosecutor Hamidul Islam Dulal, the convict was absconding when the verdict was announced.
The case originated from an incident on May 10, 2023, when Sirajganj Detective Branch police arrested Faridul Islam with 80 counterfeit 1,000-taka notes during a transaction. Sub-Inspector Ishanur Rahman of the Detective Branch filed the case following the arrest. Faridul Islam is the son of Kalachan from Matikura Matpara village in Ullapara upazila.
The ruling concludes a case that began nearly three years earlier, highlighting continued law enforcement efforts against counterfeit currency operations in the region.
Sirajganj court jails youth for 10 years over counterfeit money trade
An allegation has been raised against Kaliganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Shamima Akter Jahan for slapping a motorcycle garage worker at a fuel station in Lalmonirhat. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon at Lubana Filling Station in Chandrapur Union’s Chaparhat Bazar when the UNO reportedly checked a fuel card and found the photo did not match the person presenting it. A video of the incident later spread on social media, drawing widespread criticism across the district.
According to locals, the worker, identified as Nodi, had gone to collect fuel on behalf of a sick college teacher using his card. Nodi claimed the UNO slapped her several times without asking any questions, despite her innocence, and she demanded justice. In response, UNO Shamima Akter Jahan denied the allegation, saying she only took the vehicle key because the card appeared irregular and instructed the worker to contact her office. She added that the key was later returned when the worker’s guardians arrived.
The incident has sparked local outrage and debate over the conduct of administrative officials during public service supervision.
Kaliganj UNO accused of slapping garage worker over mismatched fuel card photo
Police in Tongi, Gazipur arrested two men early Thursday in connection with a recent gunfight incident. Two arrested in Tongi with foreign pistol linked to recent gunfight case
At least ten people were killed in an armed attack on a copper and gold mining project in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province. Two Bangladeshi students from University of South Florida reported missing in Tampa
Police have arrested three suspects five days after a college student was killed in a clash over government land in Begumpur village of Nabiganj upazila, Habiganj. Acting on a tip-off, officers detained the suspects from Taherpur in Sunamganj late Wednesday night. The arrested individuals were identified as Helal Mia, Nasir Mia, and Masum Mia, all residents of Begumpur village.
According to the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Jayanta Talukdar, the three detainees include the prime accused in the murder case. He stated that operations are continuing to apprehend the remaining suspects. The incident occurred on Sunday, April 19, when a dispute over government land between groups led by Helal Mia and Khalilur Rahman escalated into violence, resulting in the death of Khalilur Rahman’s son, college student Manjur Mia.
Police have so far arrested five individuals in connection with the case, and further investigations are ongoing to locate others involved.
Three arrested after college student killed in Habiganj land dispute clash
Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has collected the DNA sample of former army warrant officer Hafizur Rahman in connection with the Tonu murder case, ten years after the case was filed. The sample was collected at the CID forensic lab in Dhaka before Hafizur was presented in a Comilla court, and the matching process has begun. The investigation officer, Inspector Md. Tarikul Islam, confirmed the development on Thursday evening, adding that efforts are ongoing to arrest other suspects.
In 2017, the CID reported finding sperm from three men on Tonu’s clothing but did not match the DNA profiles with any suspects. This is the first time a suspect’s DNA has been collected for matching. Hafizur was arrested from his home in Keraniganj on Tuesday and placed on a three-day remand by a Comilla court. Two other retired army personnel, Sergeant Zahid and soldier Shahin Alam, are also under suspicion.
The case dates back to March 20, 2016, when Tonu’s body was found inside the Comilla Cantonment area after she went missing while tutoring at a residence there.
DNA sample taken from ex-army officer Hafizur in Tonu murder case after ten years
