A wounded participant of the July uprising, Md. Ruhul Amin, testified on Tuesday before International Crimes Tribunal-1 as the sixth witness in the case concerning the killing of 28 people in Rampura, Dhaka. The case names former Border Guard Bangladesh officer Lt. Col. Redwanul Islam and three others as accused. Ruhul Amin, now 55, described being shot near Meradia market on July 19, 2024, while observing a student protest, and said he was taken to Mugda Medical College Hospital after being injured.

He told the tribunal that on July 20, 2024, he was forcibly discharged from the hospital after alleged threats from local Awami League members to doctors, who were told to kill the wounded with injections. Ruhul Amin said he received no medical documents and was later threatened at home by party members. He continued treatment at a private hospital and later learned through social media that security personnel were involved in the shooting. He appealed for justice against the accused.

Two of the four accused, Lt. Col. Redwanul Islam and Maj. Md. Rafat Bin Alam Mun, were produced in court from prison, while two former police officers remain fugitives.

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-11 has arrested the prime suspect in the killing of a third-gender person who was burned alive in Comilla’s Burichang area. The arrest took place late Monday night in a joint operation by RAB-11 and RAB-6 in the Bhomra area of Satkhira district. The detainee, identified as Zahid Islam alias Apon alias Zahid Hijra, aged 46, is a resident of Burichang. The incident occurred on May 13 when Enamul Haque Shishir alias Mahi, aged 29, was tied up, doused with petrol, and set on fire inside a tin-shed house near the Muktijoddha Complex in Burichang Bazar. He later died on May 17 while under treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.

According to RAB, both the victim and the suspect belonged to the third-gender community and had been living together for a long time. Law enforcement officials reported that they were involved in drug trading, and a dispute over money led to the killing. The victim’s father filed a murder case with Burichang Police Station, and the incident sparked widespread attention on social media across the country.

RAB stated that the arrested suspect has initially confessed to his involvement in the murder, and legal proceedings are underway.

A Dhaka court has ordered the seizure of income tax records belonging to Md. Abdus Sobhan, a cartographer in the Air Traffic Management division of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), and his wife, Mrs. Salma. The order was issued on Tuesday, March 19, 2026, by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md. Sabbir Faiz following a petition from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

According to the petition filed by ACC Assistant Director Md. Mahbub Morshed, the couple allegedly acquired and possessed assets worth Tk 46,50,387 beyond their known sources of income and concealed information about assets worth Tk 19,32,000 in their tax filings. The ACC had filed a case against them in November 2023 under sections 26(2) and 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004.

The investigator stated that under section 309(3)(a)(i)(ii) of the Income Tax Act, 2023, tax records cannot be seized without a court order. The court granted the request to seize the documents to ensure proper investigation.

Member of Parliament for Madaripur-1, Sayeed Uddin Ahmad Hanzala, personally joined a special anti-drug operation in Shibchar upazila of Madaripur district on the night of May 18. Despite heavy rain, the operation was conducted in Ramrayer Kandi area under Umedpur Union, leading to the arrest of three individuals with drugs. A mobile court later sentenced each of them to two years in prison.

According to local sources, the detainees were identified as Abdul Ali, 63, his wife Shahida, 48, and Md. Wasim Aknon, 40. Assistant Commissioner (Land) Shaikha Sultana led the mobile court, which also recovered drug paraphernalia and cash during the raid. MP Hanzala stated that eliminating drugs from society requires collective effort and reaffirmed that such operations will continue.

Local residents said the MP’s direct participation in the field boosted public confidence and created fear among drug dealers, bringing a sense of relief to the community.

A woman was killed after coming into contact with an electric trap set to deter wild elephants in Lama upazila of Bandarban. The incident occurred early Tuesday in the South Haydarnashi area of Fasiakhali Union, inside an orchard owned by Gias Uddin. The deceased was identified as Ruby Akter, 38, wife of Abdus Shukkur from the same village. Police recovered the body after being informed of the incident.

According to local accounts, wild elephants had been damaging croplands in the area, prompting Gias Uddin to install an electric trap around his orchard to protect it. When Ruby Akter entered the field early in the morning, she accidentally came into contact with the live wire and died on the spot. Police said legal action would be taken regarding the incident.

Authorities have not yet disclosed further details about possible charges or preventive measures to avoid similar accidents in the future.

Three technicians were seriously injured when an air conditioner compressor pipe exploded during repair work at a hall room of the Engineering Institute in Dhaka’s Ramna area on Tuesday afternoon. The victims were rescued and admitted to the National Burn Institute. The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m., leaving one of the technicians, Md. Mamun, with burns covering 35 percent of his body. Doctors described his condition as critical.

According to eyewitness and colleague Abdul Malek, the explosion happened suddenly while the technicians were repairing the air conditioner. The injured were identified as Md. Mamun, 38, Mohammad Rusul, 30, and Ratan Chandra, 32. Local residents and coworkers quickly transported them to the hospital for treatment.

Dr. Shawon Bin Rahman of the National Burn Institute confirmed the extent of their injuries and said all three are receiving treatment. The families of the injured have demanded full medical support. Authorities have evacuated the hall room and ordered a safety inspection following the explosion.

A private tutor was beaten to death with a tube-well handle in Chapainawabganj’s municipal area on Monday night. The incident occurred at Adhirnengra Mor, where teacher Morium Begum had gone to give lessons to a student. Police said the attack led to her death on the spot. The accused, identified as Fomi Khatun, allegedly carried out the assault.

According to police and local sources, Morium Begum, wife of Abul Kalam from Choukpara area, was teaching Fomi’s daughter when the attack took place. Fomi had previously faced allegations of drugging women to steal their gold ornaments. Locals suspect the killing may have been motivated by an attempt to take Morium’s jewelry.

Officer-in-Charge Ekramul Hossain of Sadar Model Police Station confirmed that the body was recovered and sent to the district hospital morgue. Two individuals have been detained for questioning as part of the investigation.

At least 20 people, including three journalists, were injured on Tuesday afternoon when two groups of workers clashed in the Chaumuhana area of Sreemangal, Moulvibazar. Witnesses said the confrontation erupted suddenly following a previous dispute, leading to chasing and counter-chasing between the groups. Shops in the area closed quickly as panic spread among residents, and traffic on key roads was severely disrupted.

Law enforcement intervened after the situation escalated, dispersing both sides and restoring order. A Dhaka court has rejected the bail petitions of retired Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik in two separate cases involving allegations of amassing wealth beyond known income and misusing power to seize a plot in Purbachal. The order was issued on Tuesday by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Foyez. Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) prosecutor Mohammad Tarikul Islam confirmed the decision, stating that defense lawyers sought bail in both cases, which the prosecution opposed.

According to the case files, ACC Assistant Director Abdullah Al Mamun filed the two cases against Manik. One case accuses him of acquiring assets worth Tk 5.39 crore illegally during his tenure as a judge, leading to charges under the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, the Money Laundering Prevention Act, and the Prevention of Corruption Act. The second case also names several others, including the wife of former finance minister AHM Mustafa Kamal and former RAJUK officials, for allegedly collaborating to misappropriate a plot in the Purbachal New Town Project.

The court’s decision means the former justice remains without bail as the corruption proceedings continue.

Former Rail Minister Nurul Islam Sujan has been newly shown arrested in the murder case of Md. Jahangir filed at Jatrabari Police Station in Dhaka. On Tuesday, May 19, Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque ordered the arrest following a petition from the investigation officer. The court sent Sujan to jail and scheduled a bail hearing for the following day.

According to the case details, the victim’s brother, Md. Umar Faruk, filed the case after Jahangir was shot during an anti-discrimination student movement in the Shonir Akhra area on July 20, 2024. Jahangir later died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Sujan is listed as the 13th accused in the case.

CID Inspector Md. Shamim Hossain, the investigation officer, stated in his petition that preliminary findings suggest Sujan’s involvement in planning and executing the crime. The court accepted the petition and approved the arrest order. Earlier, on May 5, Sujan had received bail from the High Court in three other cases.

A special tribunal in Sirajganj has sentenced Dr. Raihan Sharif, a lecturer at Shaheed M. Monsur Ali Medical College, to 21 years in prison under two sections of the Arms Act. The verdict was delivered on Monday by Judge Md. Iqbal Hossain of Sirajganj Special Tribunal-1. Public Prosecutor Rafique Sarkar confirmed the sentence, noting that the time the convict spent in custody will be deducted from his total prison term.

According to the case documents, on March 4, 2024, Dr. Raihan Sharif entered an examination hall on the fourth floor of the college’s academic building carrying firearms and knives, allegedly to intimidate students. During the incident, he fired a pistol, injuring student Arafat Amin Tomal in the right leg. Enraged students detained him and informed the police, who recovered two foreign pistols, ammunition, magazines, and knives from the scene. Police later arrested him and filed a case under the Arms Act.

After reviewing witness statements and evidence, the court found Dr. Sharif guilty and imposed the 21-year sentence.

A Dhaka court has ordered the seizure of income tax documents belonging to A.B.M. Shahriar, brother of former Detective Branch (DB) chief Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid, in connection with a corruption case. The order was issued on Tuesday, May 19, by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Faiz. Court bench assistant Md Riaz Hossain confirmed the decision. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Deputy Director Muhammad Zainal Abedin had earlier filed a petition seeking the seizure of Shahriar’s tax records.

According to the petition, Shahriar, managing director of President Resort and Agro Limited, allegedly possessed assets worth Tk 12.96 crore beyond known sources of income. It also alleged that Harun-or-Rashid abused his official position to assist his brother in the offense. The court granted the petition after a hearing, citing the necessity of reviewing all tax returns and related documents for proper investigation.

The ACC had filed the case on December 17, 2024, accusing Harun-or-Rashid of possessing Tk 17.51 crore in illegal assets, his wife Shirin Akter of Tk 10.76 crore, and Shahriar of Tk 12.96 crore.

A one-and-a-half-year-old boy named Yamin died after falling into a water-filled pit in the yard of his home in Betaga area of Jorkhali Union, Madarganj upazila, Jamalpur. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning when the child was playing outside while his mother was working in the kitchen. The pit had formed due to soil excavation for household work and had accumulated rainwater.

Family and local sources said that after Yamin fell into the pit, he was quickly rescued and taken to the Madarganj Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead. Dr. Nahidul Islam from the emergency department confirmed that the child had died before reaching the hospital.

Officer-in-Charge of Madarganj Model Police Station, Snehashish Roy, stated that police were dispatched to the scene after receiving the report.

Former army member Shahin Alam, the third suspect in the murder case of Comilla Victoria Government College student Sohagi Jahan Tonu, has fled to Kuwait. According to the report, he left the country after the current government brought renewed momentum to the long-stalled investigation. Tonu’s mother, Anwara Begum, expressed anger over his escape, questioning how he managed to leave despite a travel ban on all suspects and demanding his immediate repatriation for trial.

Shahin Alam previously served in the 2 Signal Battalion at Comilla Cantonment and retired early, citing physical unfitness. He later established a cattle farm and a feed shop named “Messrs Sumaiya Agro” in his home village of Gobindapur, which has since closed after his departure. The investigation officer, Tariqul Islam, had submitted his name as one of three former army personnel suspected in the case and sought a court order for his DNA collection and arrest warrant.

Investigators traced Shahin’s last known mobile location to Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. His phones are now switched off, and his whereabouts remain unknown.

Police have arrested Mahmud Hasan Sonamoni, a Jubo Dal leader from Ishwardi, along with three associates in Lalpur upazila of Natore. The arrest took place on Tuesday morning, May 19, during a raid in the Palidoha area. Officers recovered a foreign-made pistol, a magazine, and ten rounds of ammunition from Sonamoni’s possession. The operation was confirmed by Lalpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Shafiqul Islam Palash.

According to police sources, the raid was conducted based on secret information. Along with Sonamoni, three of his associates, identified as Kajol and Sweet among others, were detained at the scene. Sonamoni is known to be the joint convener of the Ishwardi upazila unit of Jubo Dal, a youth wing of a political organization.

The police stated that legal proceedings regarding the recovered firearm and ammunition are underway, and preparations are being made to file a case at the Lalpur Police Station.
