Three police officers from Gazipur Metropolitan’s Konabari area have been withdrawn following allegations of abducting, assaulting, and extorting money from a businessman. The officers—ASI Azizul Haque, constables Nazmul Hossain, and Mamun Hossain—were attached to the police lines after the complaint. The alleged incident occurred on Monday night when businessman Delwar Hossain was forcibly taken from the Baimaile area, beaten, and threatened with a false drug case before being robbed of 28,400 taka.

According to the written complaint, another youth named Sifat was also detained and intimidated for having an online gambling app on his phone. Police allegedly took additional money from Delwar’s mobile account and later returned only a small portion. Delwar filed a formal complaint the next day seeking investigation and recovery of the extorted funds. ASI Azizul Haque denied all allegations, while Sifat confirmed the incident but declined to elaborate.

Assistant Police Commissioner Abu Naser Al-Amin stated that the accused officers were withdrawn pending investigation and that further legal action would follow based on the findings.

A Chattogram court has sentenced seven people to life imprisonment for the murder of expatriate Md. Rafique in the Amirbag area of the city. The verdict was delivered on Wednesday by Judge Muhammad Ali Akkas of the Sixth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court, nearly twenty years after the case began. Along with life imprisonment, each convict was fined 25,000 taka, with an additional one-year jail term in case of non-payment. Eight other accused were acquitted due to lack of evidence.

According to the prosecution, Rafique, who had returned from the United Arab Emirates in July 2007, went missing on August 14 of the same year after leaving his in-laws’ house in the Kadamtali area. Later that night, his body was found at Chattogram Medical College Hospital, and it was revealed that he had been killed and left in Amirbag. His brother Zakir Hossain Lulu filed a murder case with Kotwali Police Station.

Four convicts were present in court during the verdict, while three others were absent. Arrest warrants have been issued for the absconding convicts.

The High Court has granted bail to Sheikh Tasnim Afroze Imi, former vice president of Shamsunnahar Hall Students’ Union at Dhaka University, in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act. The order was issued on Thursday by a bench comprising Justice K M Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher. Advocate Motahar Hossain Saju represented Imi during the hearing.

According to the case details, on the night of March 7 this year, around 9:30 p.m., Imi and several others announced a program to play a historic speech in front of Shahbagh Police Station. While they were broadcasting the speech from a rickshaw, a group of Dhaka University students, including Daksu leader A B Zubair, Mosaddeq Ali Ibn Mohammad, and National Student Power convener Tahmid Al Modassir, obstructed them. Subsequently, Zubair and Mosaddeq allegedly forced Imi and another person into the Shahbagh Police Station, where police detained them.

The following day, police showed the three detainees arrested under the Anti-Terrorism Act and sent them to jail. The case was filed by police as the complainant.

A 22-year-old man named Mahbub from Noapara village in Cumilla’s Debidwar upazila was found dead by hanging in a rented house in Angaura village under Gouripur Union of Daudkandi upazila on Wednesday, April 29, 2026. Police from Gouripur outpost recovered the body in the afternoon following reports from locals. Mahbub had been living there with his wife, Sanjida Akter, for about nine months and worked as an autorickshaw driver.

According to family and local sources, Mahbub had been struggling with financial hardship and was reportedly addicted to playing the mobile game Free Fire. His wife stated that frequent arguments occurred over his gaming habits. On the day of the incident, a quarrel escalated, and she left for work. Upon returning home later, she found the door locked and discovered her husband’s body inside.

Police said the body was being sent to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for autopsy and that legal procedures were underway to investigate the incident.

After years of relative calm, Dhaka’s underworld has again become active, with renewed incidents of extortion, territorial disputes and killings. Police sources report that the resurgence began after a series of violent events since 2023, including the recent killing of listed top criminal Khondkar Naim Ahmed Titon in New Market. The use of illegal firearms has raised serious concern among law enforcement agencies.

According to police, many of these criminals had been in hiding or imprisoned but reemerged following a 2023 shooting targeting gangster Tarek Saeed Mamun that injured a lawyer. Subsequent murders, including that of businessman Sadhan in 2024, have been linked to overseas crime bosses. Groups such as those led by Robin, Dalim, and Subrata Bain are reportedly operating from abroad, while older networks like the Seven Star and Five Star groups have resurfaced.

Police say they are working to curb the flow of illegal weapons and bring fugitive criminals under the law. However, the failure to recover weapons lost during the July 2024 unrest continues to worry authorities, who fear these arms may have reached criminal hands.

A 60-year-old fish farmer named Shahidullah Mia died while undergoing treatment after being severely injured in an attack by drug dealers in Rupganj, Narayanganj. The incident occurred on April 11 in the Gangannagar Namapara area of Murapara Union, following a dispute with local drug traders. Shahidullah was attacked with hammers, knives, steel pipes, and sharp weapons when he tried to stop drug sales and use near his fish farm. The attackers also allegedly snatched 20,000 taka from him before fleeing. He was first taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later transferred to Bangladesh Multicare Hospital in West Rampura, where he died on Wednesday afternoon.

Following his death, Shahidullah’s son-in-law Mozammel Haque Bhuiyan filed a case with Rupganj Police Station, naming four individuals and several unidentified others. The officer-in-charge of Rupganj Police Station, AHM Salauddin, stated that the case will now be treated as a murder case. Police have inspected the scene and are actively working to arrest the suspects.

The incident has sparked anger and tension in the local community, according to residents and police sources.

A lawyer named Solaiman Haque, aged 38, was killed after being run over by a truck in Panchagarh Sadar upazila on Wednesday, April 29. The accident occurred in the Ahmadnagar area on the Milgate Bazar–Phultala road under Dhakkamara Union. Police and local sources said Solaiman was returning home from Panchagarh on a motorcycle when a truck coming from the opposite direction collided with him. He fell on the road and was crushed under the truck’s wheels, dying on the spot.

The deceased was a resident of Saddarpara in Mareya Bamonhat Union of Boda upazila and a member of the Panchagarh Lawyers’ Association. Police recovered the body and sent it to Panchagarh Modern Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. Officer-in-Charge Ashraful Islam of Panchagarh Sadar Police Station said the body would be handed over to the family after the post-mortem. The truck fled the scene, and legal proceedings are underway to locate and seize it.

A top-listed gangster named Titon was shot dead in Dhaka’s New Market area, and his family alleges the killing stemmed from a dispute with another gangster, Picchi Helal, over control of a cattle market in Bhashila. The incident occurred on Tuesday night near Shahnewaz Hall, where unidentified assailants opened fire. Following the autopsy, police handed over Titon’s body to his family, who have since filed a murder case at New Market Police Station.

According to the case statement, Titon’s brother Khondaker Saeed Akhtar Ripon accused eight to nine unidentified individuals of involvement. Ripon said Titon had recently told him about tensions with Helal and others regarding the cattle market lease. Titon had been released on bail in August 2024 after a long imprisonment and had expressed a desire to lead a lawful life. Police have yet to make any arrests in connection with the case.

The case file also mentions that Titon was related to another known gangster, Iman, though Ripon denied any conflict between them. Investigations into the killing are ongoing.

A fisherman named Rajib Sheikh, aged 35, died after being struck by lightning while lifting fishing nets in the Kirtonkhola River at Maizpara area of Japsa Union, Naria upazila, Shariatpur. The incident occurred around 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, 2026. According to Naria Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Bahar Mia, Rajib was fishing as usual when a sudden lightning strike hit him, causing severe injuries. He fell into the boat and was later taken to Naria Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.

Naria Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Abdul Kaiyum Khan confirmed the lightning incident and said that the victim’s family received Tk 25,000 in government assistance after officials verified the case and visited the family.

Local authorities have not reported further casualties or damage related to the lightning strike.

The High Court has acquitted Hosaf Group Chairman Moazzem Hossain from the Barapukuria coal mine corruption case in Dinajpur. The verdict was delivered by a bench comprising Justice Md Zakir Hossain and Justice K M Rasheduzzaman Raja after hearing Hossain’s petition seeking cancellation of the case proceedings. Senior lawyers A B M Altaf Hossain and Khandaker Maruf Hossain represented Moazzem Hossain, while Shahin Ahmed appeared for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Moazzem Hossain had filed the petition last year challenging the legality of the charges. The High Court had earlier issued a rule and stayed the proceedings against him. The case, filed in 2008 at Shahbagh Police Station, alleged irregularities in contractor appointments for coal extraction, management, and maintenance at the Barapukuria mine, causing a state loss of Tk 158.71 crore. In November 2024, a trial court framed charges against four individuals, including Moazzem Hossain and a former acting secretary of the Energy Ministry, while several others, including former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, were discharged.

The High Court’s decision effectively cancels the proceedings against Moazzem Hossain, aligning with earlier acquittals of the main accused.

A local BNP leader in Mongla upazila of Bagerhat has been accused of assaulting a woman during a dispute over fencing near her home. According to local sources, the incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in Ulubinia village of Sonailtala Union, when Salma Begum, aged 40, was putting up a fence to prevent livestock from entering her yard. Rafiqul Sheikh, the general secretary of ward no. 7 BNP, and several of his followers allegedly attacked her.

A Dhaka court has ordered the imprisonment of content creator Aminur Shah after his arrest in Nawabganj on charges of making derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) on social media. A thief who stole two IPS batteries from a school in Roumari, Kurigram, later returned them secretly. According to local sources and a general diary filed at the police station, the incident occurred around 2 a.m. on April 25 during a storm. The thief entered the school by climbing over the veranda grill and broke the office room lock to take the batteries, leaving the IPS unit behind. The head teacher subsequently filed a general diary with the Roumari police.

Three days later, on Wednesday, the two batteries were found in an abandoned room of the school, suggesting the thief had returned them at night. A guardian named Ruhul Amin said the thief’s conscience might have awakened, realizing that stealing school property was wrong. Another local resident, Samiul, speculated that the thief might have feared being caught due to the ongoing police search.

The cross-examination of Jamal Uddin, father of slain lawyer Saiful Islam Alif and plaintiff in the murder case, continues at the Speedy Trial Tribunal in Chattogram. Residents and BNP activists in Kaharol upazila of Dinajpur staged a protest and surrounded the local police station late Tuesday night following an extortion allegation against upazila BNP secretary Md. Shamim. The complaint was filed by decoration businessman Harichandra, who claimed that police detained him near Harisva with two liters of petrol and later called Shamim to the scene. Harichandra alleged that Shamim threatened him with legal trouble and demanded Tk 15,000, taking Tk 10,000 on the spot and pressing for the remaining amount the next day.

The protest took place inside the police station in the presence of local BNP and Jubo Dal leaders, including Sadeq Hossain and Anarul Islam, who demanded punishment for Shamim.
