Arms dealer Md. Majedul Haque Helal has confessed in court under Section 164 in connection with the murder of Inquilab Mancha spokesman Sharif Osman Hadi. Police produced Helal before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Saturday after a three-day remand. He voluntarily agreed to give a confessional statement, which was recorded by Magistrate Arifur Rahman following a request from CID Assistant Superintendent Abdul Kadir Bhuiyan. Helal was later sent to jail.

Helal, owner of Hamidul Haque Arms & Co. in Chattogram, was arrested earlier from the same city. Investigators traced the pistol used in Hadi’s killing to his shop, revealing that the weapon had changed hands through several licensed dealers since its import in 2017. Helal’s arms license, originally issued in his father’s name, had expired in 2014 and was not renewed. Police sought his remand to determine how the weapon reached the attackers.

Hadi was shot on December 12 last year in Dhaka’s Bijoynagar area and later died in Singapore on December 18. The case was later transferred to the CID for further investigation.

An SSC examinee named Tahmina Akter from Charakhali village in Indurkani Sadar Union, Jianagar upazila of Pirojpur, went to the local police station on Saturday to prevent her forced marriage. She sought police protection to avoid being married off before her upcoming SSC examinations. Tahmina, a student of Jianagar Government Setara Smriti Secondary Girls’ School, took shelter at the police station to stop what she described as a child marriage attempt by her family.

Local sources said her father, farmer Alam Hawlader, decided to marry her off due to financial hardship and the cost of her education. Tahmina stated that her father, brother, and sister-in-law were pressuring her to marry, but she wanted to continue her studies and sit for the SSC exams. Her classmates described her as a bright student and expressed hope that she would be able to continue her education.

Police Sub-Inspector Saidur Rahman confirmed that the girl was returned to her family after they signed a written pledge, witnessed by local elders, promising not to proceed with the marriage.

A police assistant sub-inspector (ASI) named Md Imran Hasan was beaten by locals in Faridpur’s Saltha upazila after allegedly being caught in the house of a drug case suspect’s wife late at night. The incident occurred around 3 a.m. on Friday, April 17, in Bolivodradia village under Ramkantapur Union. Imran, who serves as an assistant beat officer in the same union, was later rescued by police and admitted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital.

According to the suspect’s family, Imran had developed an illicit relationship with the wife of Mehedi Hasan, who faces a narcotics case. Locals claimed to have found contraceptives in Imran’s pocket and circulated a video of the incident on social media. Imran, however, stated that he had gone there to arrest the accused. The local police officer-in-charge said legal action is underway and that the reasons for Imran’s late-night visit without uniform are under investigation.

Authorities are now probing the circumstances of the incident and the conduct of the police officer involved.

A warrant-listed suspect was allegedly injured due to police assault during his arrest in Bakerganj, Barishal, on Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. in the Katharpul area of Ward 4 under the municipal authority. The injured youth, Rezaul Hawlader, 22, from Khas Maheshpur village in Niamati Union, was taken to the Upazila Health Complex for initial treatment before being sent to court in Barishal.

Rezaul’s mother, Shilpi Begum, accused Sub-Inspector (SI) Sabita Rani of detaining and beating her son without cause. She said a dowry case filed by Rezaul’s wife had led to a court warrant, which the family was unaware of. Witness Tara Banu confirmed seeing SI Sabita slap Rezaul during the arrest, while his sister Dalim Begum alleged human rights violations. Medical officer Miraj Uddin Ahmed reported visible injuries on Rezaul’s chest and legs.

SI Sabita denied any assault, claiming she acted lawfully under the warrant. The Bakerganj police officer-in-charge stated that if any misconduct occurred, it would be investigated upon receiving a formal complaint.

The Mymensingh Medical College administration has formed a three-member investigation committee following a violent clash between two factions of the Chhatra Dal at the college hostel on Friday evening. The committee, headed by Professor Seheli Jannat Sultana with Professor Shamimul Masud Ahmed and Professor Mohammad Rafiqul Haque as members, has been instructed to submit its report within seven working days. To maintain order, the academic council held an emergency meeting and suspended all classes and examinations for seven days, also directing students to vacate the hostel.

College Principal Professor Dr. Md. Members of the National Security Intelligence (NSI) in Barishal district seized a pickup truck loaded with diesel, petrol, and octane that was being stored illegally in Gournadi upazila. The operation took place on Saturday afternoon at the warehouse of a local businessman, Abdur Rahman, in the Sarikal port area. The seized fuel, collected from the Meghna depot in Barishal, included 2,400 liters of diesel, 600 liters of octane, and 200 liters of petrol.

According to sources, the NSI team acted on a tip-off about fuel smuggling and caught the vehicle while the fuel was being unloaded for illegal storage. Abdur Rahman allegedly used a license from Khan Enterprise to collect the fuel unlawfully and had previously sold such fuel at inflated prices. He reportedly ran an electronics shop in Sarikal port where he sold fuel without a valid license.

Authorities said that legal action against those involved in the illegal storage is being processed through a mobile court.

An executive magistrate in Banshkhali, Chattogram, sentenced a man to three months in jail for assaulting his mother while under the influence of drugs. The punishment was handed down on Saturday, April 18, 2026, by Executive Magistrate and Assistant Commissioner (Land) Omar Sani Akon. The incident occurred in Khudukkhali area of Chanua Union, where the accused, Shahidul Islam, 27, attacked his mother after consuming drugs. Police quickly conducted an operation and arrested him following the report of the assault.

According to Banshkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Khaled Saifullah, regular drives against drug abuse and social crimes will continue. He stated that strict legal measures will be taken against such offenses to maintain law and order in the area.

Police in Sreepur, Gazipur rescued a 16-year-old madrasa student who had been abducted on April 14 while on her way to school. According to police and press sources, the main accused, Md. Abid, and his associates forcibly took the girl near the Maona Fire Service area. Although she was briefly returned home the next day following community pressure, she was abducted again later that morning. During the second abduction, her relatives were assaulted when they tried to intervene.

The victim’s father filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, naming ten individuals including Abid and listing 25–30 unidentified suspects. Acting on the Superintendent of Police’s directive, a joint operation by the district detective branch and Sreepur police led to the arrest of seven suspects, including two named in the case. The rescued victim was found early on April 18 in the MC Bazar area and sent for medical examination and judicial procedures.

Police confirmed that the main suspect and several others remain at large, and operations to apprehend them are ongoing.

Five activists of the opposition youth wing Jubo Dal were injured in separate clashes over drug control and local dominance in Feni district. The incidents occurred on Friday night in Sonagazi upazila’s Kazirhat and Lakshmipur villages. Police said three people were arrested on Saturday in connection with the violence, which has created tension in the area.

According to local sources, the first clash broke out around 10 p.m. in Lakshmipur area of Mangal Kandi union, where two Jubo Dal factions engaged in fighting and gunfire. Jubo Dal leader Mohammad Suman and activists Harun and Faisal were among those injured and admitted to Feni General Hospital. In a separate incident at Kazirhat Bazar, Sonagazi, volunteer leader Jasim Uddin was attacked after trying to stop theft and extortion.

Sonagazi BNP convener Zainal Abedin said the incidents were driven by personal interests and not linked to party activities. Police confirmed that both clashes stemmed from disputes over local dominance and said legal action would follow upon receiving written complaints.

Nur Alam Masud, owner of Satata Oil Mills in Feni’s Sonagazi municipality, died early Saturday at Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s burn unit after suffering severe burns in an explosion. The incident occurred on April 14 when Masud attempted to produce octane using an alternative method learned from YouTube. His colleague, Omar Faruk, was also critically injured and remains under treatment.

According to family members and police, the explosion happened when a pipe burst due to excessive heat during the experiment at the oil mill. Masud’s brother said the temperature went out of control, causing the blast. Police from Sonagazi Model Station visited the site but reported that no formal complaint had been filed as of yet.

Authorities stated that legal action would be taken if a written complaint is submitted. The body of the deceased was sent home after autopsy for burial.

Police in Saidpur, Nilphamari recovered the hanging body of a female patient named Sathi Akter, aged 28, from a room at a private clinic called Doctors Hospital on Saturday morning. Before police arrived, her husband, Raihanul Islam, and relatives fled the scene. The incident created shock in the local area.

According to hospital sources, Sathi was brought by ambulance from the 100-bed Saidpur Hospital around 5 a.m. and admitted to the private clinic, where nurses continued her previous treatment. Nurse Zahida Begum said the husband stayed briefly, left to bring breakfast, returned once, and then went out again, leaving the patient alone. During a routine check, staff found the room locked from inside and later discovered her hanging from a ceiling fan with a scarf.

Police sent the body for autopsy at Nilphamari General Hospital and confirmed that an investigation and legal procedures are underway.

A mobile court in Raipur upazila of Lakshmipur district conducted a late-night operation at Akhon Bazar, uncovering illegal fuel storage and overpricing. The raid, held at 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, led to the seizure of approximately 350 liters of fuel from the home of a trader named Jasim, 45, who had been storing and selling fuel at inflated prices. The court fined him 20,000 taka, which was collected on the spot, and warned him against repeating such actions.

According to administrative sources, the confiscated fuel will be sold to local consumers at fair prices under government supervision, and the proceeds will be deposited into the state treasury. Members of law enforcement agencies assisted in the operation to ensure order and compliance.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mehedi Hasan Kawsar stated that similar drives will continue regularly to maintain market stability and protect consumer interests.

Police have stated that the murder of Asadul Haque, also known as Lombu Asadul, in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area was driven by prior enmity and financial disputes. According to Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner Md. Ibne Mizan, acquaintances lured Asadul from his home and stabbed him to death. The briefing was held on Saturday at the DMP Media Centre on Minto Road.

Following the killing, police used technology to identify suspects and arrested four people, including the main planner, from Keraniganj. The detainees are Akhtar Hossain, Md. Munna, Miraj Fakir, and Nayon alias Khokon. A switchgear and a motorcycle used in the crime were seized. Police said Akhtar had a previous altercation with Asadul that led to a case and imprisonment. After Asadul’s release, their conflict continued, culminating in the fatal attack.

A murder case has been filed by the victim’s cousin, and police are seeking remand for the suspects. Authorities also reported that Asadul had six prior cases, while the arrestees had multiple criminal records. Police plan to strengthen checkpoints and operations to prevent similar incidents.

A police officer named Atikur Rahman, stationed at Nilphamari Police Lines, was detained on Friday night after proposing marriage to the wife of a Malaysia-based expatriate in Domar upazila. The incident occurred in Hujurpara village under Domar Sadar Union, where Atikur visited the woman’s home and made the proposal. Family members confined him inside the house, and police later rescued him after he signed a written pledge.

According to local accounts, Atikur had previously served at Domar Police Station and developed a close relationship with the woman’s in-laws, referring to them as his religious parents. This connection led to frequent visits to their home, during which he became acquainted with the woman. Four months earlier, she had gone with Atikur to Nilphamari court for legal advice about family issues, which later caused tension with her in-laws.

Domar Sadar Union Parishad Chairman Masum Ahmed confirmed the detention, stating that the family handed Atikur over to police after keeping him confined until night. Nilphamari Police Lines officials said they were aware of the incident and that Atikur had rejoined duty the following morning.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has expressed strong condemnation and deep concern over the abduction of a 15-year-old madrasa student in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur. The party demanded the immediate arrest and punishment of those responsible for the incident. In a statement issued to the media on Saturday, Jamaat’s Secretary General and former MP Mia Golam Porwar voiced the party’s position.

According to the statement, the abduction took place on Wednesday, April 15, when armed assailants allegedly held the girl’s father, a mosque imam, at gunpoint before taking the student away. Porwar criticized the police for failing to rescue the victim or apprehend the perpetrators even after considerable time had passed. He described the incident as alarming and indicative of a serious deterioration in law and order.

Porwar further alleged that the current government has failed to ensure the safety and dignity of women and blamed law enforcement inaction for such crimes. He urged authorities to rescue the abducted girl promptly and bring the offenders to justice.
