An allegation has been raised against Imran Hossain Pradhan, president of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal unit at Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University, for leading an assault on Deputy Registrar Khandaker Ehsan Habib. The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday when a group led by Imran visited the vice-chancellor’s office with various demands. Later, near the medical center, the group allegedly blocked Habib’s path, questioned his visit to the VC office, and warned him not to go there again. When Habib mentioned informing a local MP and syndicate member, Imran and another student, Hridoy, allegedly attacked him. Another deputy registrar, Aminul Islam, was also harassed when he tried to intervene.

Habib is known as a nationalist-leaning officer who previously faced multiple cases under the ICT Act and was dismissed from his job during the Awami League government for criticizing the administration on social media. He was later reinstated by court order. Attempts to contact Imran Hossain Pradhan for comment were unsuccessful.

The incident follows a February 15 allegation that some university officials tried to confine the vice-chancellor in his office.

The Bangladesh Coast Guard detained eight individuals, including the leader of the notorious Jahangir gang, during an operation in Cox’s Bazar. A 20-year-old woman named Mousumi Akter died after jumping from the sixth floor of the new building at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital on Wednesday morning, February 25, 2026. The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. when she came to the hospital with her mother for treatment. Police recovered the body and sent it to the hospital morgue.

According to family sources, Mousumi, daughter of Wazedul Islam from Kamarhia village in Tarakanda upazila, had been suffering from mental instability for a long time. Her brother Yusuf Ali said she had shown some improvement with regular treatment but had relapsed five days earlier, prompting the hospital visit. He also mentioned that he works at a Square establishment in Valuka and was on his way to the hospital after hearing the news.

Assistant Director of the hospital, Dr. Mohammad Main Uddin Khan, stated that preliminary findings suggest the young woman fell on her own. Police have been instructed to take necessary legal action regarding the incident.

A case has been filed at Kotwali Model Police Station against 12 members of the Barishal District Lawyers Association, including its president and secretary. Following the case, joint forces arrested association president Sadiqur Rahman Linkon from a room on the third floor of the association’s annex building around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday. He was later handed over to Kotwali Model Police Station the same afternoon.

The other accused include Barishal District and Sessions Judge Court’s Public Prosecutor Abul Kalam Azad, Metropolitan Court’s PP Nazimuddin Panna, and several other advocates. A Dhaka court has issued a travel ban on former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman. The order was given on Wednesday by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Faiz following a petition from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Sri Lanka’s former intelligence chief, retired Major General Suresh Sallay, has been arrested in connection with the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings that killed around 279 people. According to police sources cited by Al Jazeera, Sallay was detained early morning in a suburban area of the capital. Investigators said he was arrested on charges of aiding and conspiring in the deadly attacks.

Sallay was promoted to head of the State Intelligence Service after Gotabaya Rajapaksa became president in 2019. The Easter Sunday attacks targeted three churches and three luxury hotels, injuring more than 500 people and killing 45 foreign nationals. Initially, a local armed group was blamed, but Sallay later faced allegations of involvement in planning the attacks.

A 2023 report by Britain’s Channel 4 alleged that Sallay met with the attackers and allowed the bombings to proceed to influence that year’s presidential election in favor of Rajapaksa.

Three members of a family were severely burned in a gas line explosion early Wednesday in Hosenpur area of Kachua upazila, Chandpur. A fire broke out on the tourist houseboat 'Machhranga' in Tahirpur, Sunamganj, on Wednesday morning around 11 a.m. The incident occurred near the Rakti River by the Anwarpur Bridge. No tourists were on board at the time, and no casualties were reported. The fire is believed to have started from an electrical short circuit at the rear of the vessel.

According to the president of the Tanguar Haor Tourist Boat Association, repair work was underway on the 'Machhranga' and another houseboat when the fire began. Only mechanics and workers were present. Local residents and nearby shopkeepers quickly joined efforts to control the blaze, but much of the boat’s interior equipment was destroyed before the fire was extinguished.

Police in Muradnagar upazila of Cumilla have arrested a youth named Al Amin Molla on charges of abducting and raping the wife of an expatriate. The arrest took place on Tuesday evening from a rented house in the Ramdhanimura area, and the victim was rescued. The following morning, the accused was sent to the Cumilla Judicial Court. Two of his accomplices managed to flee during the operation.

According to the case statement, about one and a half years ago, the victim was married to an expatriate through family arrangements. On February 19, while she was traveling from her in-laws’ house to her father’s home, Al Amin allegedly abducted her and took her to his rented house, where he forcibly raped her. The next day, they reportedly registered a marriage through an affidavit at a Cumilla court.

Muradnagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Anwar Hossain Chowdhury said the arrest was made based on the victim’s family’s complaint, and efforts are underway to apprehend the two fugitives.

Two people were killed and one injured when a truck ran over a van in Fulbari upazila of Dinajpur on Wednesday morning. The accident occurred around 8 a.m. on the Dinajpur-Gobindaganj regional highway at Baliharpur area under Aladipur Union. Police confirmed that the deceased were van driver Ainul Sarkar, 53, of Rajarampur area in Shibnagar Union, and passenger Ruma Khatun, 22, of Baraihat area in Aladipur Union. Another passenger, Yasmin Akter, 45, was injured and is receiving treatment at the local health complex.

According to local sources, the victims were traveling by van from Baraihat to a factory in Rangamati when a Dhaka Metro-registered truck lost control and crushed the van. The truck driver and his assistant fled the scene after the incident. Police and fire service personnel later recovered the bodies and seized the truck.

Fulbari police said the bodies have been prepared for handover to families and a case under the Road Transport Act is being processed.

Four people were killed in a stabbing attack on Tuesday morning near Tacoma, Washington, when a man attacked multiple individuals outside a house on the Key Peninsula. The suspect was later shot dead by police officers. According to local authorities, deputies from the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched at 8:41 a.m. after reports that the suspect had violated a no-contact order.

Deputies obtained a copy of the order but found it was not yet effective because the suspect had not been formally served. As they proceeded to deliver it, the suspect began stabbing people outside the residence. Witnesses reported seeing the attack around 9:30 a.m. The first deputy arrived within minutes, and the suspect was shot at 9:33 a.m. and pronounced dead at the scene.

A Dhaka court has sentenced former Dhaka South Jubo League president Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat to 20 years in prison for amassing illegal wealth. The verdict, delivered by Judge Md Zakaria Hossain of Dhaka’s Special Judge Court-6 on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, includes two separate 10-year sentences under different sections, along with a fine of 2 million taka. In default of payment, Samrat will serve an additional one year of imprisonment. The court also issued an arrest warrant as Samrat remains absconding.

Samrat was previously arrested during an anti-casino drive in October 2019 and later released on bail in August 2022.

Bengaluru police detained 18 individuals on suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals and later transferred them from Karnataka to West Bengal, according to a report published on February 25, 2026. The group includes women and children. Police sources cited by Anandabazar said the detainees were behaving suspiciously and lacked valid documents. They were taken to West Bengal on Tuesday afternoon, but their next destination remains unclear.

A section of the M A Goni Road in Burichang, Comilla, collapsed only 18 days after partial repair work was completed. The road repair project, costing Tk 18 crore, has drawn allegations that the contractor used substandard materials and ignored tender conditions. Locals reported that minimal bitumen was used, and no retaining wall was built along parts of the road. Some sections were resurfaced over old carpeting, and the new layer was thinner than required.

The repair work began about two months ago, covering the stretch from Shashongachha to Burichang. Residents claimed that the contractor’s team worked at night using poor-quality pitch, which easily peeled off. In some areas, the carpeting was only 20–25 millimeters thick instead of the specified 50 millimeters. Contractor Mohammad Abul Hossain attributed the collapse to soil displacement and promised repairs, while the Roads and Highways Department’s executive engineer Khondaker Golam Mostafa said the work was ongoing and any irregularities would be investigated.
