A planned and organized attack on police occurred in Mymensingh on Tuesday afternoon when officers were taking a listed accused, Ariful Islam, to the police station. The attackers, led by Ariful’s father Sagar Ali, assaulted the police team and forcibly freed Ariful, who was still in handcuffs. Five police members, including an assistant sub-inspector and three constables, were seriously injured and admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.

According to police, Ariful and his associates had earlier attacked a local resident named Russell, leaving him critically injured and hospitalized in Dhaka. Following that incident, a case was filed at Kotwali Model Police Station, and a team led by Sub-Inspector Farid Ahmed arrested Ariful. However, during the transfer, hundreds of armed locals ambushed the officers.

Officer-in-Charge Md Nazmus Sakib described the attack as extremely serious and alarming. Sagar Ali has been detained, and law enforcement, including RAB and army personnel, have been deployed to control the tense situation. Police operations continue to capture Ariful and others involved in the assault.

Testimony in the war crimes case over the killing of Abu Sayeed, the first martyr of the July uprising, has concluded against 30 accused. The International Crimes Tribunal-2, led by Justice Md Manjurul Basid with District and Sessions Judge Nur Mohammad Shahriar Kabir, completed the process on Tuesday, January 13, 2026. The defense lawyers finished cross-examining investigation officer Ruhul Amin, marking the end of testimony from 25 witnesses. No defense witnesses were requested, and the tribunal scheduled Wednesday, January 14, for setting the date of arguments.

During the hearing, police presented six detained defendants, including former Begum Rokeya University proctor Shariful Islam and several others, while 24 accused, including Vice-Chancellor Hasibur Rashid, remain absconding. Four state-appointed lawyers are representing the fugitives. Prosecutors Mizanul Islam and Gazi M.H. Tamim appeared for the state.

The tribunal had framed formal charges against the 30 accused on August 6, 2025, and the trial formally began with opening statements on August 27, 2025.

A Dhaka court has postponed the submission date of the investigation report in the Salman Shah murder case to February 22. The case involves 11 accused, including the late actor’s former wife Samira Haque and film villain Don. On January 13, Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana’s court set the new date after the investigating officer, Atiqul Islam Khandaker of Ramna Model Police Station, failed to submit the report as scheduled. During the hearing, the plaintiff’s lawyer, Faruk Ahmed, filed a petition seeking seizure of the accused’s immovable and movable assets, which the court ordered to be recorded.

The case stems from the 1996 death of film actor Salman Shah, whose body was found at his Eskaton residence in Dhaka. Initially treated as an unnatural death, the case was later converted into a murder case following a court directive. Over the years, multiple investigations by CID, judicial authorities, and PBI have alternately concluded suicide or reopened the case upon revision petitions.

The latest court order continues the long-running legal process, with the next hearing scheduled for February 22.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Cyber Unit has arrested eight members of an online fraud ring, including five Chinese nationals, during a weeklong operation in the city’s Bashundhara and Uttara areas. The arrests were announced on Tuesday at a press briefing at the DMP Media Center by DC (Cyber North) Hasan Mohammad Naser Rikabdar. Police seized over 51,000 SIM cards, several VOIP gateway devices, mobile phones, laptops, and other digital equipment used in cybercrime.

According to the DMP, the suspects used Telegram, WhatsApp, and other social media platforms to lure victims with fake job offers, investment schemes, and low-cost product advertisements. The money collected from victims was allegedly converted into cryptocurrency and transferred abroad through VOIP gateway machines. The arrested individuals include Chen Ling Feng, Zeng Kong, Zeng Changqiang, Wen Jian Qiu, Huang Zheng Jiang, Md Zakaria, Niaz Masum, and Kamrul Hasan alias Hasan Joy.

Police said the passports and visa status of the Chinese nationals are being verified, and digital devices seized from them contained Chinese software applications. Legal proceedings are underway against all detainees.

The Bangladesh Army has issued a statement regarding the death of BNP leader Md. Shamsuzzaman, known as Dabulur, during a joint forces operation in Chuadanga’s Jibannagar upazila. According to an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) release on Tuesday, the operation took place on the night of January 12, based on specific intelligence to recover illegal weapons. Dabulur, aged 50, was detained from a pharmacy near the Jibannagar Upazila Health Complex on allegations of possessing illegal arms. Following his information, a 9mm pistol, a magazine, and four rounds of ammunition were recovered. Shortly after the operation, he fell ill and was declared dead at 12:25 a.m. by on-duty doctors at the health complex.

The ISPR described the incident as unexpected, tragic, and unacceptable. It confirmed that the camp commander and all participating army personnel have been withdrawn to the cantonment. A high-level investigation committee has been formed to determine the cause of death, and the army pledged to take appropriate action under military law if any personnel are found guilty.

Six police officers were killed and three others injured in two separate bomb explosions near the Afghan border in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Monday. Officials said a remote-controlled bomb targeted an armored police vehicle on the Gomal Bazaar road in Tank district, killing six officers on the spot. Another attack the same day in Lakki Marwat district injured three officers, one of them critically.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the attacks and paid tribute to the slain officers. Following the incidents, the province’s Counter-Terrorism Department launched operations in Peshawar, Bannu, and Khyber districts, killing at least eight armed suspects and claiming to have foiled several sabotage plots. Naqvi stated that security forces would continue their operations to restore peace in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

No group has claimed responsibility for the bombings so far. However, tensions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border have escalated since October last year, with Pakistan accusing the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) of launching cross-border attacks from Afghan territory and alleging that India provides the group with financial and logistical support.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has seized smuggled goods and narcotics worth about Tk 7.49 crore in coordinated operations across the 1,668.854-kilometer Rangpur region border during December 2025. The information was disclosed by Lieutenant Colonel Mahbub Ul Haque, the acting officer of the Rangpur region, at a press briefing held on Monday, January 12, 2026, at the Kurigram BGB hall room. A total of 70 suspects were detained during the month-long drives.

The seized items include Indian phensedyl, yaba, cannabis, heroin, tapentadol tablets, and other intoxicant syrups. BGB also recovered six foreign pistols, 29 rounds of ammunition, 197 cattle including cows and buffaloes, and various smuggled goods such as motorcycles, cosmetics, clothing, pesticides, cumin, bicycles, and stone artifacts. As part of anti-human trafficking efforts, 15 people at risk of trafficking were rescued and handed over to police, while surveillance against counterfeit currency and cross-border crimes was intensified.

Additionally, BGB distributed blankets among 1,125 cold-affected people and provided free medical care and medicines to 1,100 individuals. The official stated that patrols and operations will continue to ensure border security and internal law and order.

A Dhaka court recorded the confessional statement of Mohammad Jinnat, one of the accused shooters in the murder of former Dhaka North Swechchhasebak Dal general secretary Azizur Rahman Mosabbir. The confession was taken by Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque after Jinnat agreed to give his statement. Following the recording, he was sent to jail. The court also granted seven-day remand for three other accused — Mohammad Billal, his brother Abdul Kadir, and Mohammad Riaz — for further investigation.

The hearing took place on Monday afternoon when the investigation officer presented the accused before the court. The remand request was heard by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam, with Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki representing the state. The accused denied involvement, claiming they were not connected to the incident.

The murder occurred last Thursday night near Hotel Super Star in West Tejturi Bazar, Tejgaon, when unidentified assailants shot Mosabbir, who later died at a local hospital. His wife filed a murder case the following day, leading to multiple arrests across several districts and the recovery of a motorcycle and cash linked to the crime.

A Chattogram court has sentenced ten individuals to life imprisonment for the murder of police constable Abdul Kaiyum, who was stabbed to death by robbers a decade ago. The verdict was delivered on Monday by Judge Mizanur Rahman of the Chattogram Special Judge Court. The convicted are Md. Javed, Nurul Alam, Suman Molla, Harunur Rashid, Tapan Chandra Sarker, Mintu Das, Arsal alias Russell, Faruk alias Bullet Faruk, Md. Sohel, and Md. Babul. Five of the convicts were present in court, while the other five remain absconding.

Each convict was also fined 25,000 taka, totaling 250,000 taka, which the court ordered to be handed over to the slain constable’s family. According to court sources, the incident occurred on November 3, 2013, in front of the DIG bungalow at Tigerpass Ambagan under Khulshi Police Station, when robbers attacked police personnel, killing Kaiyum and injuring three others.

Abdul Kaiyum, a resident of Sandwip upazila in Chattogram, had joined the police as a constable on October 6, 2012. The case was filed naming 11 suspects and several unidentified persons, and the verdict came after testimony from 14 witnesses.

Police in Kulaura upazila of Moulvibazar arrested four robbers with weapons while they were fleeing after a robbery early Sunday. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. in the Baganbari area of Hossainpur under Kadipur Union. The arrested men were identified as Juber Ahmad Jubla, 28, Delwar Hossain, 27, Nazim Mia, 26, and Zakir Hossain, 30, all residents of different areas in Kulaura. Police also seized a microbus and a motorcycle used in the crime.

According to police sources, the robbers stopped local resident Lal Mia, 42, while he was returning home on a motorcycle, and took his phone, wallet, and motorcycle at knifepoint before escaping in a microbus. Acting on the report, a police team led by Additional Superintendent of Police Azmal Hossain and Officer-in-Charge Moniruzzaman Mollah launched an operation in the Chunghar area around 3 a.m. and arrested four suspects. During the raid, Azmal Hossain sustained a finger injury from an attack by the robbers.

Police said the detainees are identified robbers and have been charged. They will be presented before the court soon.

A seven-year-old Bangladeshi girl named Afnan has been placed on life support after being critically injured by gunfire that crossed into Bangladesh from Myanmar’s ongoing internal conflict. The incident occurred in the Hwaikyang border area of Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, on Sunday afternoon. She was brought to Chittagong Medical College Hospital around 4:30 p.m. in critical condition, where doctors performed emergency surgery on her head that night.

Hospital Director Brigadier General Taslim Uddin confirmed that the bullet struck Afnan’s head, leaving her in a highly critical state. A CT scan and emergency operation were conducted, and she was later placed on life support due to deterioration. Earlier in the day, rumors of her death spread in the area, prompting local unrest.

The shooting followed intense clashes between the Arakan Army and Rohingya armed groups in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, which escalated Saturday night. A stray bullet from the Myanmar side hit Afnan’s home in the Techchibridge area. Local residents staged protests after hearing of her supposed death, but law enforcement and community leaders later restored calm.

A Bangladeshi fisherman was seriously injured in a landmine explosion on Monday morning near the Hwaikyang border area of Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar. The victim, Mohammad Hanif, 22, from Lombabil area of Hwaikyang Union, lost his right leg in the blast that occurred between Shahjahan’s Island and Hansher Island on the Bangladeshi side of the Naf River.

According to family and local sources, Hanif was fishing with nets and a boat when the landmine exploded, leaving him critically wounded. His father, Fazal Karim, confirmed the incident and claimed the mine had been planted by the Arakan Army. Locals rescued Hanif and took him to the MSF hospital in Kutupalong, Ukhiya, for initial treatment before he was referred to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for advanced care.

Following the incident, agitated locals blocked the Cox’s Bazar–Teknaf highway for about half an hour before traffic resumed. No official statement was available from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) regarding the explosion.

A Dhaka court has acquitted actress Mehazabien Chowdhury and her brother Alishan Chowdhury in a case filed by a businessman alleging threats and intimidation. The order was issued on Monday by Dhaka District Executive Magistrate Md Adnan Zulfikar after a hearing. Earlier, the siblings had surrendered and secured bail on November 16 of the previous year. The court had set January 12 for submission of their written response, which was found satisfactory, leading to their release from the case.

According to the complainant’s lawyer Raihan Gazi Noyon, the actress and her brother submitted a written undertaking promising not to issue further threats, which the court accepted before granting acquittal. Defense lawyer Tuhin Howlader stated that the court found their explanation satisfactory. The case was filed under sections 107 and 117(3) of the Criminal Procedure Code after the complainant, businessman Amirul Islam, alleged that Mehazabien and her brother had taken 2.7 million taka under a business pretext and later threatened him when he demanded repayment.

The court’s decision effectively ends the proceedings, contingent on the defendants’ compliance with their written undertaking.

A Dhaka court has granted two additional days to Abdullah Al Jaber, member secretary of Inqilab Moncho, to review the Detective Branch (DB) police charge sheet in the murder case of the platform’s spokesperson, Shahid Sharif Osman Bin Hadi. The plaintiff appeared before the court on January 12 and sought more time, after which Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam set January 15 for the hearing on the charge sheet’s acceptability. Three state-appointed lawyers—Abdus Sobhan Torofdar, Barrister S.M. Moinul Karim, and Assistant Attorney General Mostafizur Rahman Mukul—have been assigned to represent the plaintiff.

According to the case, DB Inspector Faisal Ahmed submitted the charge sheet on January 6 against 17 accused. The main accused, Faisal Karim Masud alias Dawood, and five others remain absconding, while 11 are in custody. The case stems from the December 12 shooting of Hadi in Dhaka’s Bijoynagar area, after which he was treated in Dhaka and later in Singapore, where he died on December 18.

The court will decide on January 15 whether to accept the charge sheet or raise objections.

Police in Tongibari upazila of Munshiganj arrested a man for operating a secret yaba manufacturing factory inside a rented house. The raid took place around 10 p.m. on Sunday in Dakshin Betka village under the leadership of Officer-in-Charge Monirul Haque Dablur. The arrested man, identified as Md. Firoz, aged between 35 and 37, is the son of Abu Taher from Dhaka’s Basabo area. Police recovered 800 yaba tablets, 25 grams of crystal meth, modern production machines, and a large quantity of chemicals from the site.

Investigations revealed that Firoz had been involved in drug trafficking in Dhaka for nearly a decade and had several drug-related cases filed against him. About five years ago, he moved to Tongibari to hide and secretly set up the factory inside a concrete building. Police said Firoz brought modern yaba-making equipment from Hong Kong six to seven months ago and imported hazardous chemicals via courier to start production.

According to police, Firoz admitted during interrogation that he had recently begun producing and attempting to distribute yaba. Authorities are now working to identify and arrest other members of the network based on his information.
