A Dhaka court on Monday, June 1, 2026, began the trial of Sohel Rana and his wife Swapna Akter in the murder of eight-year-old schoolgirl Ramisa Akter in Pallabi. During the hearing, Sohel shouted in court that he did not commit rape, claiming another man named Dollar was responsible for the assault, while he admitted to dismembering the body. The court, presided over by Judge Masrur Salekin of the Dhaka Metropolitan Tribunal for Suppression of Child Violence, framed charges against both accused and set the next hearing for witness testimony on Tuesday.

According to the prosecution, Ramisa was lured into the accused’s flat, where she was assaulted and killed. Her body was later found dismembered in the bathroom of the apartment on May 19. Police arrested Sohel from Narayanganj and his wife from the scene. The defense argued that the investigation was rushed and lacked eyewitnesses. The court read out the charges, and both accused were asked to respond; Swapna broke down in tears, while Sohel claimed she was innocent.

The case has drawn attention due to Sohel’s repeated claims implicating another suspect named Dollar, though no further details about this individual were presented in court.

The hearing on charge framing in the case of the rape and murder of child Ramisa began on Monday at the Dhaka Metropolitan Tribunal for the Suppression of Violence Against Children. The session started around 11:15 a.m. in the court of Judge Masrur Salekin, where the state-appointed lawyer Azizul Rahman Dulu read out the charges to the accused. The case accuses Sohel Rana and his wife Swapna Akter, who were charged by the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Ohiduzzaman of Pallabi Police Station. The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court had previously accepted the charge sheet and transferred the case to the tribunal.

Law Minister Asaduzzaman stated on Sunday that the government would seek the maximum punishment for the crime, citing the evidence and the accused’s confession as grounds for expecting the highest penalty.

Traders and farmers from across Bangladesh have alleged widespread extortion at the Diabari sacrificial cattle market in Dhaka’s Uttara area. According to multiple accounts, money was collected from sellers for preferred spots, sand purchases to avoid mud, and vehicle stickers for transporting animals. Reports indicate that extortion was carried out through loudspeaker announcements demanding Tk 1,000 per cow, with traders claiming losses due to poor market conditions and forced payments. The leaseholder, Sheikh Farid Hossain of SF Corporation, denied all allegations, asserting that no extortion occurred and promising legal action against false claims.

On-site observations revealed volunteers collecting money under various pretexts, including “shed costs” and “tips.” Drivers reported paying Tk 5,000–10,000 for truck or pickup stickers, while farmers said they were compelled to buy sand at inflated prices. Despite the leaseholder’s denial, disputes over payments were witnessed in his presence.

Even after Eid, waste from the temporary market remained uncleared, causing severe odor and public discomfort. City officials said cleanup was delayed because the leaseholder had not yet removed market structures, while residents demanded disinfection to prevent health risks.

A severe road accident occurred on Sunday night at Barabkunda Bazar in Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram, involving a passenger bus, a microbus, a drum truck, and a CNG-run autorickshaw. Bangladesh’s Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has warned that no terrorist or criminal group will be allowed to maintain a safe haven in Chattogram’s Jungle Salimpur area. He issued the warning on May 31, 2026, during a press briefing after inspecting the site in Sitakunda upazila. Senior government and law enforcement officials, including the state minister for land and the Chattogram city mayor, were present during the visit.

The minister said that past political criminalization had fostered a “state within a state,” with Jungle Salimpur serving as a visible example. Following reports of armed attacks and extortion, the government launched a joint law enforcement operation on March 9 to dismantle the parallel control system established by criminals. He noted that some objectives were not fully achieved due to information leaks but confirmed that ringleaders and land grabbers behind the violence were being identified.

Ahmed assured residents that no immediate evictions would occur and that a sustainable resettlement plan would be developed. He also announced plans for a modern road network and new security infrastructure linking Salimpur with nearby areas to permanently eliminate criminal activity.

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md. Anisul Huq stated that the government will seek the highest punishment in the Ramisa murder and rape case. He made the remark on Sunday afternoon, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring justice in the case.

The minister also highlighted the independence of Bangladesh’s judiciary, noting that the government has no control over the posting or disciplinary matters of Supreme Court judges. He acknowledged that political influence had been alleged in the past but maintained that the judiciary remains largely independent. Addressing the issue of case backlogs, he mentioned that around 4.5 million cases are currently pending due to a shortage of judges and lawyers.

The report further notes that the state has appointed a lawyer at its expense for the Ramisa case, and charges have been framed against Sohel and his wife, with proceedings scheduled to begin on June 1.

A mosque in Rotterdam, Netherlands, was attacked late Thursday night when six individuals vandalized the Mevlana Mosque, according to the Islamic Foundation Netherlands (ISN). The attackers reportedly damaged a mosaic wall, threw beer bottles at the building, and urinated in front of it. Despite repeated calls from mosque authorities, police arrived only after the attackers had left the scene.

In a statement issued Friday, ISN criticized the police for failing to respond promptly, saying officers did not consider the incident an immediate threat or emergency. The organization expressed concern that such assessments undermine the safety of worshippers and their right to practice religion without fear. It also noted that attacks targeting Muslims and mosques have been increasing, leaving congregants feeling unsafe.

ISN confirmed that it has filed a formal criminal complaint and urged authorities to prioritize the investigation into the attack, citing deep concern over both the vandalism and the delayed police response.

A 60-year-old Canadian citizen, Kenneth Law, has pleaded guilty to 14 charges of aiding suicide by selling poison online. He entered the plea on Friday in an Ontario court as part of a deal with prosecutors, which led to the withdrawal of more serious murder charges. Authorities said Law, a former chef, sold about 1,200 poison packages to people in 40 countries through online suicide forums, with a quarter of the shipments sent to the United Kingdom.

All 14 charges against him relate to Canadian victims. Families in the UK expressed anger that British prosecutors did not charge him, despite reports that 79 deaths there were linked to his products. The UK’s Crown Prosecution Service stated it agreed with the Canadian plea deal, ensuring British deaths would be considered during sentencing. Law will not face trial in the UK, as he could challenge extradition after conviction in Canada.

Under Canadian law, aiding suicide carries a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison. His sentencing hearing will begin on September 23, where victim impact statements will be read in court.

A court in Cyprus has seized a property owned by Bangladeshi businessman Mohammad Saiful Alam, known as S Alam, and his wife as part of an ongoing investigation into bank fraud and money laundering. The Nicosia District Court issued the order on May 19 following a request from the Cypriot anti-money laundering unit MOKAS, acting under a mutual legal assistance process initiated by Bangladeshi authorities. The seized asset is a two-storey residential building located in Parekklisia.

According to documents submitted to Cypriot authorities, Bangladeshi investigators are examining allegations of fraudulent lending, illegal asset accumulation, and money laundering linked to a network of companies and financial transactions between 2009 and 2024. S Alam, founder and chairman of the S Alam Group, obtained Cypriot citizenship in 2016 through the now-defunct “Golden Passport” program.

A day after the seizure order, a Bangladeshi court sentenced Saiful, ten relatives, and associates to five months in jail over a loan case involving about 6 million euros from Islami Bank. Authorities in Dhaka allege that companies linked to him defaulted on large loans and transferred funds abroad through entities registered in Cyprus, the British Virgin Islands, and Jersey.
