A physically disabled student of Dhaka University’s Bangla Department, Abhay Kumar Singh, has accused several Chhatra Dal activists of assaulting him at Jagannath Hall on Sunday evening. The incident reportedly began over a minor dispute at a tea stall when Abhay was asked to lower his leg from a bench. Later, four individuals—Chandan Das, Jhalak Das, Ripon Chandra Sarkar, and Sagar—allegedly entered his room and physically assaulted him, also threatening him not to appear at the tea stall again.
Following the allegations, the Dhaka University unit of Chhatra Dal announced on Monday that three of the accused—Chandan Das, Jhalak Das, and Ripon Chandra Sarkar—were relieved of their organizational posts for violating party discipline. Police in Chattogram have arrested 11 people, including members of a banned student group, for alleged involvement in violence following the rape of a three-and-a-half-year-old child in the Baklia Chairman Ghat area. The arrests were made Monday night during coordinated raids across the city. Authorities said the suspects were involved in setting a police vehicle on fire, attacking a deputy police commissioner, and attempting to incite unrest.
Investigators revealed that the detainees had also planned to kill the rape suspect, Monir Hossain, either during court proceedings or while in custody, to embarrass the government and destabilize law and order. Police said they thwarted the plan through rapid deployment and arrests. The violence on May 21 had spread from Baklia to the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar highway, prompting police to use rubber bullets, sound grenades, and tear gas to restore order.
Police confirmed that separate cases are being prepared, possibly under the Anti-Terrorism Act. Security has been tightened in the affected areas, and further suspects are being identified through video footage and witness accounts.

A newly built drain in Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar, constructed at a cost of about 3.5 million taka under the Roads and Highways Department (RHD), collapsed before its inauguration. The 240-foot-long structure tilted and was partially damaged after only 30 minutes of rainfall. Locals alleged that poor-quality bricks, cement, and sand were used, and that the walls were built without reinforcement rods, leading to the collapse. The project was implemented by Hasan Enterprise, owned by Shahab Uddin Chowdhury.
Residents questioned how such irregularities occurred despite RHD supervision. Local businessmen said the use of substandard materials caused public money to be wasted and demanded an investigation and accountability. When contacted, the contractor disconnected the call, citing busyness. RHD’s sub-divisional engineer Mostafa Munsi stated that the work was still ongoing and that rainwater pressure caused a slight tilt. He added that the contractor had been instructed to repair the damaged section at their own expense.
The incident has raised concerns about construction quality and monitoring in government-funded infrastructure projects in the region.

Armed assailants launched simultaneous attacks on two temporary camps of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and police in the remote hilly area of Jungle Salimpur, Sitakunda, Chattogram, late Sunday night. Around 250 to 300 armed men, believed to be members of the Yasin Bahini group, carried out the assault, prompting a joint operation by RAB and police. The attackers reportedly cut roads at five key points using excavators before the assault to block reinforcements and later escaped without resistance. No arrests or weapon recoveries were reported as of Monday afternoon.
Security analysts described the incident as a major intelligence failure at three levels—before, during, and after the attack. They noted that heavy machinery operated overnight without detection, no early warnings were issued, and the attackers’ escape routes remain unidentified. Experts said the operation reflected long-term planning and local collaboration, highlighting weaknesses in surveillance and coordination among intelligence agencies.
Officials acknowledged the need for stronger monitoring systems in the hilly region. Analysts warned that without improved intelligence integration and local engagement, preventing similar future attacks would remain difficult.
