Prime Minister Tarique Rahman visited the family of eight-year-old Ramisa, who was raped and murdered in Dhaka’s Pallabi area. The visit took place on Thursday night, where the Prime Minister spoke with Ramisa’s parents and relatives, offering condolences. Earlier, the State Minister for Sports had also visited the family to express sympathy. The Law and Home Ministers assured that justice for Ramisa’s killing would be ensured swiftly.
Law Minister Asaduzzaman instructed the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner to submit the investigation report within seven days. Ministry sources confirmed that the main accused, Sohel Rana, confessed in court to raping and killing Ramisa. The authorities have pledged to complete the trial quickly. Following his statement under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code, a Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate ordered Sohel Rana to be sent to jail.
According to the case filed by Ramisa’s father, Abdul Hannan Mollah, Sohel Rana, his wife Swapna Akter, and another unidentified person were accused. All have been arrested and sent to jail by court order.

Police in Narsingdi have arrested Sabuj Mia, the prime suspect in the murder of a nine-year-old boy named Ramim in Palash upazila’s Gajaria area. The arrest took place on Wednesday morning at the Arshinnagar railway station area. Sabuj, son of Lokman Hossain from Char Karardi village, had been on the run since the incident. Law enforcement officials said he was captured with the help of information technology while attempting to flee to another location.
According to police, on May 6, Sabuj and three others—Faisal, Shishir, and Babu—allegedly took Ramim to a rickshaw garage in Gajaria Bazar, where they pumped air into his body through his rectum and mouth using a machine. The child was critically injured and later died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Following the incident, Ramim’s father, Ripon Mia, filed a murder case against the four accused at Palash Police Station.
Police have sought a seven-day remand for Sabuj and are continuing efforts to arrest the remaining suspects.
Prime suspect arrested in Narsingdi child murder case
Police in Brahmanpara upazila of Comilla arrested a suspected drug dealer named Kabir Hossain on Wednesday afternoon in connection with an attack on two journalists. He was detained in the Dakshin Shashidal area while allegedly attempting to flee to India. The arrest was confirmed by Brahmanpara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Faruk Hossain. Kabir Hossain, 35, from Dakshin Shashidal village, faces ten previous cases related to drugs and smuggling.
The attack occurred on Tuesday night at Shashidal Railway Station when journalists Akkas Al Mahmud Hridoy of Kaler Kantho and Shariful Islam Sumon of Dainik Comilla Protidin were filming footage of stolen goods and drug trafficking on the Chattala Express train. They were assaulted twice and later threatened with death if they published reports about the incident. Following the attack, a case was filed naming 11 individuals and 14 unidentified suspects.
Police said operations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects involved in the assault.
Police arrest drug dealer in Comilla over attack on two journalists investigating smuggling
The highest level of the state has directed law enforcement agencies to swiftly arrest the suspect involved in the attempted rape of a Jahangirnagar University student. The university’s proctor, A K M Rashidul Alam, announced the directive during a press conference held at the university senate hall on Thursday. He said that since the May 12 incident, multiple law enforcement units have been jointly working to identify and capture the perpetrator, and that operations have intensified following the latest state-level instruction.
According to university administration sources, a high-level investigation committee was formed on May 16 as part of the ongoing response. The university has also announced a reward of Tk 50,000 for information leading to the suspect’s identification and arrest. Various agencies, including the district police, RAB, DB, PBI, CID, and DMP teams, are conducting both manual and technology-based searches nationwide.
Law enforcement’s cyber and intelligence units continue their technical investigation, expressing optimism about apprehending the suspect soon. The university administration is being regularly updated on the progress of the operation.

A fish trader named Abu Siddiq, aged 40, died after being struck by lightning in Tatuakanda village under Khagkanda Union of Araihazar upazila in Narayanganj. Abu Siddiq was the son of the late Asmat Ali and had long been involved in the local fish trade. According to local sources, dark clouds gathered suddenly, followed by rain and a lightning strike that fatally injured him. His sudden death has cast a pall of grief over the area, with family members and neighbors mourning deeply.
Local representatives have expressed condolences to the bereaved family, and the community remains in shock following the tragic event.
Fish trader killed by lightning strike in Narayanganj’s Araihazar
A young man named Fazle Rabbi was beaten to death by a mob in Sherpur upazila of Bogura on May 20, allegedly over an attempt to steal a transformer. The incident occurred in Chandeshwar village under Kusumbi Union. Following the incident, the victim’s mother filed a murder case at Sherpur Police Station against 50 to 60 unidentified individuals on the night of May 20.
According to the case statement, Fazle Rabbi, a 24-year-old electrician from Nata Bari village in Dhunot upazila, left home on the evening of May 19 for work. The next morning, police informed his family that he and another man, Jahangir Hossain, had been caught and beaten by locals while allegedly trying to steal an irrigation pump transformer. Rabbi was declared dead at Sherpur Upazila Health Complex, while Jahangir remained hospitalized with serious injuries.
Police said the injured were rescued and sent to the hospital, and the deceased’s body was sent to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital for autopsy. The investigation to identify those involved is ongoing.
Man dies in Sherpur mob beating over transformer theft allegation, murder case filed
Two people, including a Jubo Dal leader, were shot inside the BNP office under Labanchora Police Station in Khulna on Thursday, May 21, 2026. The incident occurred around 1:45 p.m. at the office near Putimari Bazar. The injured were identified as Masum Billah, 35, president of the Putimari Bazar Committee and a Jubo Dal member, and Zahid, 35. Locals rescued them and admitted them to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where they are receiving treatment in surgery wards 11 and 12.
According to local sources, Masum Billah and Zahid were sitting inside the BNP office when Parvez, 34, reportedly known as an accused in several cases from different police stations, entered and opened fire following an argument stemming from previous enmity. Masum was shot in the left thigh, and Zahid in the right arm. The incident caused tension in the area.
Labanchora Police Station Officer-in-Charge Syed Mosharraf Hossain said preliminary information suggests Parvez fired the shots due to prior hostility. Police have visited the scene and launched an operation to arrest the suspect.

Law Minister orders DMP to submit Ramisa murder probe report within seven days

Following the clash, students from Nur Hossain Hall blocked the Rangpur-Dinajpur highway in front of the university, causing heavy traffic congestion on both sides of the road. The situation disrupted vehicular movement for some time.
According to Professor Dr. S. M. Emdadul Hasan, Director of the Student Counseling and Guidance Department, the confrontation has been temporarily stopped, and discussions are underway with students to restore normal traffic flow.
Clash between two student groups at HSTU injures three including a teacher
Police in Chuadanga have arrested two individuals accused of filming and circulating a video of a minor girl being raped in a cornfield in the Kundipur Belemathpara area of Sadar upazila. According to local sources and police, three young men from Kundipur village allegedly took the girl to a cornfield at knifepoint. The video later spread among locals, prompting outrage and a police investigation. Police arrested Palash and Jony on Wednesday evening, while Miraj remains on the run.

Two arrested in Chuadanga for filming and sharing rape video of minor girl
Seven members of the forest robber group known as 'Chhoto Suman Bahini', including its leader, surrendered to the Coast Guard in the Nandabala canal area of the Sundarbans under Mongla upazila of Bagerhat. The surrender took place on the night of May 17, 2026, and was confirmed by Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan during a press briefing on May 21. The surrendered individuals were identified as Suman Hawlader, Robiul Mallik, Rafik Sheikh, Siddiq Hawlader, Golam Mallik, Ismail Khan, and Mahfuz Mallik.
According to the Coast Guard, three single-barrel guns, two pipe guns, 25 rounds of live cartridges, and three blank cartridges were seized from the group. The operation was part of ongoing security drives titled 'Operation Restore Peace in Sundarban' and 'Operation Mangrove Shield', aimed at ensuring safety in the forest region. Since February 12, 2026, these operations have recovered 26 firearms, various ammunition, and communication devices, while arresting 21 bandits and rescuing 20 fishermen and forest workers.
Coast Guard officials stated that intelligence and operational activities will continue until the Sundarbans are completely free of bandit groups.

A Dhaka University non-residential student transport bus named ‘Kinchit’ was involved in another accident in the Moghbazar area of the capital on Wednesday, May 20, around 3:30 p.m. Several students were injured when the bus hit the Moghbazar flyover, damaging the upper front portion. Witnesses reported that one or two injured students received primary treatment at a nearby pharmacy.
Eyewitness Helal Uddin Rafid shared details of the incident on social media, confirming that the accident occurred during the 3:20 p.m. trip. Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) transport secretary Asif Abdullah said the accident occurred despite having an experienced driver on the route, suggesting negligence. He added that the bus committee and the driver had been contacted, and a request was made to the BRTC authorities to instruct all drivers to be more cautious.
Earlier in mid-April, another Dhaka University student bus met with an accident near the BFDC area of Tejgaon, injuring five to six students. Following consecutive incidents, students have expressed concern and demanded stronger safety measures for the university’s transport system.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained eleven Bangladeshi nationals, including women and children, while they were attempting to cross into India illegally through the Baghdanga border in Maheshpur upazila of Jhenaidah district. The statement said that a patrol team from Baghdanga Border Outpost under the 58th Battalion of BGB conducted the operation around 8:30 p.m. Among those detained were five women, two men, and four children, all residents of different districts in Bangladesh. In a separate anti-narcotics operation in the Nimtala and Madhabkhali border areas, BGB recovered 81 bottles of Indian-made cough syrup without any suspects.
BGB confirmed that the detained individuals were later handed over to Maheshpur Police Station for further legal action.

The issue has been raised in the provost council meeting and will be discussed further after the vice-chancellor returns from abroad.
Murad Hossain denied issuing any threats or placing students in the hall. The university’s Chhatra Dal president said a written complaint would prompt an internal investigation. A former pro-vice-chancellor noted that such incidents could disrupt the hall’s restored discipline.
