International Crimes Tribunal-2 issued arrest warrants against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and seven others in a crimes against humanity case over the killing of Ekramul Haque in a crossfire incident in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar. The three-member judicial panel issued the order on Sunday afternoon under the leadership of its chairman, Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury.

The other panel members were Judge Md. Manjurul Bachid and Judge Nur Mohammad Shahriar Kabir. Prosecutors submitted formal charges against 11 accused, including Hasina, and sought cognizance of the allegations. The tribunal accepted the charges and issued warrants for eight accused described as fugitives.

The accused include former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former road transport minister Obaidul Quader, former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed and several military officers. Former lawmaker Abdur Rahman Bodi, Colonel Anwar Latif Khan and Brigadier General Md. Mahbub Alam are detained in other cases. The tribunal ordered the three arrested accused to be produced before it and set August 25 for the next hearing.

An investigation report has been filed at a tribunal against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 10 others in the killing case of Ekramul Haque, a councillor of Teknaf municipality in Cox’s Bazar. The prosecution submitted the charge sheet on Sunday morning, July 26, to Tribunal-2 led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury.

A nationwide anti-drug operation began on May 4, 2018, under the slogan, “Let’s go to war against drugs.” Ekramul Haque was killed in what was described as a gunfight in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, on the night of May 26 that year.

The report said audio of Haque’s final moments was recorded after calls from his daughter and wife to his mobile phone were answered. The audio recording spread on social media and prompted widespread criticism across the country. It also raised questions over accounts of “crossfire” incidents involving RAB and other law-enforcement agencies.

Drug sales and use have spread across Badarganj municipality and remote areas of all 10 unions in Rangpur district, according to allegations in a report published on July 26, 2026. Local residents said transactions and drug-use gatherings operate from morning until late at night at multiple locations. The report said its inquiry found more than 150 drug traders in the upazila and claimed the number of users, including men, women and young people, has exceeded about 50,000.

Residents alleged that law-enforcement operations catch smaller sellers while major operators remain beyond reach. They also accused some police and Department of Narcotics Control officials of maintaining contact with traffickers and alleged administrative inaction. The report named Nagherhat market, railway stations, markets and other locations as places where drugs are allegedly sold openly. Local sources made allegations against several individuals involving yaba, phensedyl, heroin and other drugs.

Sabuj Sonar Member, a local BNP leader, and Ilias Ali denied any involvement with drug trading or users when contacted, though they acknowledged involvement in sand sales. Badarganj police station Officer-in-Charge Hasan Zahid Sarkar said drug trader and user figures could not be provided without checking the register. Rangpur Department of Narcotics Control Deputy Director Abu Jafar cited staff and vehicle shortages, while saying operations continue in Badarganj and other upazilas.

A sixth witness is scheduled to testify on 26 July against dismissed army officer Major General Ziaul Ahsan in a crimes against humanity case involving allegations of enforced disappearances, torture and killings of more than 100 people. International Crimes Tribunal-1 will record the testimony before a three-member panel led by Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumder. The other members are Justice Shafiul Alam Mahmud and retired district and sessions judge Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.

On 21 June, former army member Imrul Kayes, described as Ziaul's former bodyguard, testified as the fifth witness. He alleged that Ziaul was involved in the killing of BNP central leader Ilias Ali and that he saw him kill 150 to 200 people while serving as his personal guard. Kayes also described alleged killings of eight to 10 fugitive BDR members during an operation called “Operation Rebel Hunt.”

Former army chief General Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan, the first witness, presented information on alleged extrajudicial killings on 8 February and called Ziaul a “serial killer.” He said Ziaul had ignored military-rule-related instructions. The tribunal formally framed charges against Ziaul on 14 January this year and ordered the trial to begin.

Allegations have been raised in Satkhira against Shampa Goswami, also known as Chatterjee, director of the NGO Prerona, over alleged irregularities, illegal business activity, money laundering and land grabbing. The report, published on July 26, 2026, says local residents claiming to be affected have submitted written applications to administrative offices seeking a review of the NGO’s registration, an inquiry into Goswami’s sources of wealth, and verification of the allegations. Goswami denied all accusations.

Complainants alleged that she used foreign-funded environmental and social-service work as a cover for activities supporting a banned political party. The report also raises allegations concerning dual citizenship, Indian identity documents and bank accounts, and operating activities without a work permit. Journalist Ahmadullah Bachchu and former lawmaker Mohammad Shahadat Hossain made further allegations about her conduct and activities.

Former parliamentary candidate Dr. Md. Moniruzzaman said conducting business in Bangladesh without a work permit would be a serious offence for a foreign national. District Commissioner Kausar Aziz said authorities would examine written allegations and take legal action if they were substantiated. Goswami said documents including an Indian Aadhaar card were fabricated or forged using AI, and denied allegations of laundering money through hundi.

A charge-framing hearing is scheduled for July 26 against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 33 others in the murder case of truck driver Md Hossain in Mohammadpur during the anti-discrimination student movement. The hearing is due to take place on Sunday afternoon at the court of Dhaka Special Judge No. 4, Rabiul Alam. The report describes Hasina as absconding in India.

According to case information, Hossain was shot dead in the Chad Uddyan area of Mohammadpur on July 19, 2024. He had left his truck in Gabtoli and was returning home when he was shot, dying at the scene. His mother, Rina Begum, filed a murder case at Mohammadpur police station on August 31, 2024.

Mohammadpur police sub-inspector Akramuzzaman, the investigating officer, submitted a chargesheet against 34 people on November 23, 2025. A previous charge-framing hearing was deferred on June 25 after the prosecution sought time because the accused were absent from court. Junaid Ahmed Palak, Sadeque Khan, Furqan Hossain and Shahjahan Khan have been shown arrested in the case and are currently in jail.

A police anti-drug community meeting in Kutubpur Bazar, Shibchar upazila of Madaripur, has triggered local anger after a defendant in a student murder case was reportedly present and joined discussions. Shibchar police organized the beat-policing meeting on the afternoon of July 25. Local people alleged that Azahar Howlader, a member of the banned Kutubpur Union Awami League, sat beside police officers and participated in the discussion.

Local sources said Howlader had served a sentence in the student murder case and is also accused in a recent vehicle-burning case. They said Ward Awami League president Samad Madbar Samu and several other party activists also attended and took part in discussions with police. Shibchar police inspector (investigation) Rakibul Hasan attended as chief guest, while Sub-Inspector Riazul Rahman was the beat officer.

Opposition figures criticized the meeting, saying they had not been informed and questioning how people facing serious cases could sit publicly with law-enforcement officials. Riazul Rahman said the officers were newly assigned to the area and did not know everyone present. Officer-in-Charge Md Kamal Hossain called the alleged attendance regrettable and said police were examining the matter seriously and taking necessary action.

Police recovered the hanging body of a 19-year-old man, identified as Md Shakil, from the abandoned Sudha Sadan on Road No. 5 in Dhanmondi, Dhaka. The body was recovered at about 11am on Saturday after local people saw him hanging with a noose around his neck and informed police.

Dhanmondi police sub-inspector Ahidur Rahman said police initially believe that Shakil died by suicide. He said whether any other factor was involved in the death would be confirmed after the post-mortem report and completion of the investigation. Hospital sources identified Shakil’s father as Sekendar Ali Matubbar.

Shakil lived at a residence in the Shibpur Tali Office area of Jighatola, Mohammadpur, according to hospital sources. The report said Sudha Sadan has remained abandoned since Hasina left for India after the July revolution. It also said angry people set fire to the building on August 5, 2024.

Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit, or BFIU, has submitted a High Court report alleging the involvement of former president Md. Sahabuddin Chuppu, his company JMC Builders, and S Alam-owned firms in alleged loan and share fraud involving Islami Bank. The report was filed on October 29, 2025, according to the source, following directions issued in an Islami Bank writ case. The article refers to alleged fraud involving Tk80,000 crore.

On March 11, 2025, a High Court bench issued three directions and a rule after the writ. Former Islami Bank board directors serving before the board was dissolved after August 5 were barred from leaving the country without court permission, their bank accounts were ordered frozen, and JMC Builders was barred from transferring shares. BFIU was also directed to submit a report on the matter.

Lawyer Shishir Monir said JMC Builders transferred 81.92 percent of shares through 24 companies and alleged Chuppu approved the transactions while serving as its representative director at Islami Bank from 2017 until becoming president in 2023. He said the petition seeks the return of S Alam-held shares to original entrepreneur shareholders or rightful owners. A hearing on the rule report is scheduled for Wednesday before a bench of Justices Mujibur Rahman Miah and Rezaul Karim.

The Bangladesh Professional Journalists Forum (BPJF) has demanded swift trials in the killings of 43 journalists, including Sagar-Runi, Asaduzzaman Tuhin, Golam Rabbani Nadim and Shelu Akand. The group also protested alleged torture, attacks and harassment of journalists across Bangladesh. The demands were made at a human chain outside the National Press Club on Saturday.

Former Dhaka Union of Journalists general secretary Jahangir Alam Pradhan called on the government to prioritize journalists’ safety. He urged action against those who obstruct journalists from carrying out professional duties and called for government initiatives to create a safe working environment. Participants observed a minute of silence in memory of slain journalists.

Dhaka Sub-Editors Council general secretary Jawhar Iqbal Khan said a longstanding culture of impunity in cases involving killings, torture and attacks on journalists poses a major threat to media freedom and democratic values. He said the failure to complete trials in many high-profile killings over the years was encouraging offenders. BPJF central committee president Kazi Shariful Islam Shakil chaired the event, while general secretary Md Roman Akand moderated it.

A Dhaka court granted three days’ remand for questioning of alleged shooter Chanchal Molla in the shooting death of Jubo Dal worker Yusuf Ali, also known as Parvez, in Kafrul. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junayed issued the order on Saturday afternoon, July 25, 2026.

Investigating officer Yusuf Ali Bhuiya, a sub-inspector at Kafrul police station, produced Molla before the court and sought 10 days’ remand. After the hearing, the court approved three days. No lawyer appeared on behalf of the accused in court, according to the report.

The case alleges that at about 11pm on Friday, Molla and a fugitive armed associate shot Yusuf while he and others, including Kafrul BNP member secretary Md Hafizul Islam Babu, were talking. Yusuf later died while receiving treatment, while vegetable seller Nalam Sardar and pedestrian Md Monir Hossain were seriously injured. Locals detained Molla while he was fleeing, and police said they seized a foreign pistol and four rounds of ammunition. An Arms Act case was also filed at Kafrul police station.

A couple were killed in an alleged stabbing by their son in Kunirbil Ward No. 3 of Haildhar Union in Anwara, Chattogram. The incident occurred at about 2:30pm on Sunday. The victims were identified as Swapan Dasgupta, 65, and his wife Kalpana Dasgupta, 55.

Police arrested their son, Rimon Dasgupta, 42, in connection with the killings. Local union parishad member Mohammad Mojaher said Rimon had been addicted to drugs for a long time and had previously been kept at a drug rehabilitation centre.

Police recovered the bodies from the scene and sent them to a morgue for post-mortem examinations. Anwara police station officer-in-charge Junayet Chowdhury said officers quickly reached the location after receiving information and arrested Rimon. The investigation into the incident is continuing, police said.

Bangladesh’s High Court has directed the Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate alleged share fraud involving former president Md Shahabuddin Chuppu and JMC Builders in relation to Islami Bank, according to Amar Desh. The report said Chuppu was allegedly involved in purchasing the bank’s shares through fraud as an owner and representative of JMC Builders.

Amar Desh reported that JMC Builders was owned by S Alam, while Shahabuddin Chuppu held rights to the shares. It also alleged that money used to buy the shares was looted from First Security Islami Bank, another Islamic bank described in the report as having been taken over by S Alam.

The report said Chuppu served as an Islami Bank director and later as vice chairman and held other important responsibilities as JMC Builders’ representative. It said Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit findings named Chuppu and other company members as accused. Based on that report, the High Court instructed the ACC to investigate the matter and take legal action against those responsible.

Police arrested Jubo Dal leader Arif Pradhan in Meghna upazila of Cumilla over allegations that he married his niece while already having a first wife and two children. The report, published on July 25, said he was detained around 11:30am on Saturday from Chhowanir Mor beside Thana Road.

Arif Pradhan, 38, is the son of Alauddin Mia of Titirchar village in Chalibhanga union. He is a member of the upazila Jubo Dal convening committee and member secretary of Chalibhanga union Jubo Dal. His first wife, Mosa. Liza Akter, filed a case in a Cumilla court over the matter.

According to the case complaint, Pradhan married the daughter of a neighbouring paternal cousin, described as his niece by relation, while his first wife and two children were living. Meghna police investigating officer Md Aminul Islam said a court had issued an arrest warrant against Pradhan in the case filed by his first wife. The case was filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

Police recovered roughly a sack of abandoned ammunition from a drain in the Bayezid police station area of Chattogram. City Corporation sanitation workers spotted the items while cleaning a drain in Banglabazar, on Lane 5 of the BSRM area, on Saturday afternoon, and informed police. Bayezid police then went to the site and recovered the sack.

Police said the recovered ammunition was not fresh. Mohammad Hasan Mostafa Swapan, deputy commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police’s North Division, said ammunition generally has two parts: a cartridge casing and a bullet or projectile. He said the sack contained one of those two parts, without specifying which part was found.

The deputy commissioner said further details would be known after examining the scene. Police have begun an investigation to determine where the ammunition came from, why it was left in the drain, and who may have been involved. The source did not state the quantity of individual items recovered or identify any suspects.
