The investigation into the death of actor Zaher Alvi’s wife, Ikra, has been transferred from Mirpur police to the Detective Branch (DB). The Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin’s court on Sunday, May 17, 2026, set June 24 as the new deadline for submitting the investigation report. The DB police failed to submit the report on the scheduled date, prompting the court to extend the deadline.

According to Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s prosecution division sub-inspector Saiful Islam, the case was handed over to the DB on May 14. Case documents show that on March 1, Ikra was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her Mirpur residence. Family members discovered her and took her to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Police later prepared an inquest report and collected evidence from the scene.

That night, Ikra’s uncle Sheikh Tanvir Ahmed filed a case with Mirpur Model Police Station, alleging that prolonged family disputes and mental abuse forced her to take her own life. Actor Zaher Alvi and his mother were named as accused in the case.

Md. Ramzanul Haque Nihad, owner of Amin Mohammad Foundation and an accused in the Bailey Road Green Cozy Cottage building fire case, surrendered before the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court and filed for bail but later withdrew his application. Another accused, Adib Alam, owner of Hakka Dhaka Restaurant, was granted bail by the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasan Shahadat’s court upon a bond of 5,000 taka.

Earlier, on April 19, the court accepted the charge sheet against 22 accused, including several restaurant owners from the building, and issued arrest warrants for 13 absentees. The case stems from the February 29, 2024 fire that killed 46 people and injured 11. The charge sheet, submitted by CID Inspector Shah Jalal Munshi, alleged that the accused illegally operated restaurants without proper government approval and violated safety regulations, leading to the deadly incident.

The next hearing on the arrest status of the absconding accused is scheduled for May 19, as the court continues proceedings against those charged under seven sections of the penal code.

Former Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sabbir Bin Shams, has been sent to jail in connection with a murder case filed over the deaths of six people during a fire amid the 2024 mass uprising in Lalmonirhat. He was detained while allegedly attempting to cross the border through Patgram and was produced before the Lalmonirhat Magistrate Court on Sunday. Judge Md. Police recovered the body of a Bangladeshi man from the Charbagdanga border area in Shibganj, Chapainawabganj, a week after he went missing. The deceased, identified as Shawkat Ali, 35, from Tarapur Thuthapara in Monaksha Union, was found late Saturday night on a sandbar of the Padma River. A group of students at Jahangirnagar University locked the main gate of the administrative building on Sunday morning, demanding the resignation of the proctorial body and the immediate arrest of a suspect in an attempted rape case involving a female student. The protest followed an earlier program at the proctor’s office, as students expressed frustration that the accused remained at large five days after the incident.

Students said the failure to arrest the suspect demonstrated the inaction of both law enforcement and the university administration. Protesters, including students from the Drama and Dramatics and Urban and Regional Planning departments, reiterated their six-point demand, with the first and most urgent being the suspect’s arrest. They stated that the lock on the registrar’s office would remain until authorities confirmed progress in the case.

The incident occurred last Tuesday night near the old Fazilatunnesa Hall, where a female student was reportedly dragged into a nearby forest and assaulted. The university authorities filed a case with Ashulia Police Station the following day, and students had given a 48-hour ultimatum for the arrest, which expired without result.

Over the past eighteen months, a surge in kidnappings, ransom demands, and armed banditry has unsettled the Sundarbans and surrounding coastal regions of Satkhira and Khulna. Local residents report that multiple armed groups have become active again in the western Sundarbans, targeting fishermen, honey collectors, and forest workers. On Thursday morning, eight forest workers were reportedly abducted at gunpoint from areas near the Chunkhuri River in the Satkhira range, with ransom demands ranging from 20,000 to 40,000 taka.

Families of the abducted say the kidnappers identified themselves as members of groups called Nanna Bhai/Don Bahini and Chhoto Jahangir Bahini, demanding payments through mobile banking. Locals claim that fear has returned to the waterways, with many now afraid to enter the forest for work. Some allege that fake journalists are collecting information on forest workers and passing it to the gangs.

The Coast Guard stated that regular joint operations under “Operation Mangrove Shield” have led to the arrest of over 60 bandits and the recovery of weapons. Forest and police officials said patrols and surveillance have been intensified to ensure safety and respond to complaints promptly.

An investigative report by Amar Desh reveals a multimillion-taka black market in human skeletons used for medical education in Bangladesh. The trade involves organized networks stealing corpses from graves, processing them into skeletons, and selling them to medical students for 30,000–40,000 taka each. Despite global advances in artificial intelligence and 3D simulation for anatomy learning, around 10,000 new Bangladeshi medical students still rely on bones sourced through illegal means. Police have repeatedly recovered human skulls and bones from medical hostels, exposing the scale of the illicit trade.

The report traces the roots of the trade to politically connected student leaders who dominated the business during the Awami League era, with networks controlling collection, processing, and distribution. Even after political changes, the practice persists, now operating through online groups. Students say they are compelled to buy bones to meet academic requirements, while experts argue that modern digital tools could replace real skeletons.

Medical professionals suggest policy reforms, including banning real bones in exams and promoting 3D or plastic models, as the only sustainable way to dismantle the grave-robbing syndicate and align Bangladesh’s medical education with ethical and technological standards.
