An employee of Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU) has been accused of embezzling student funds by forging bank seals and signatures. The accused, Mohammad Shahadat Hossain, worked as a computer typist in the exam controller’s office and was later transferred to the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology department. He allegedly collected cash from students, claiming it was for bank fee deposits, but instead used a fake seal on receipts while keeping the money himself. The fraud came to light on April 14 when a spelling inconsistency in the forged seal exposed the deception.

At least 14 fake receipts have been identified so far. A three-member investigation committee was formed on April 30, led by Professor Mohammad Saiful Alam of the Chemistry Department. University officials and the Agrani Bank branch manager confirmed the forgery and said the matter is under investigation. The university administration has pledged to take legal and administrative action once the inquiry report is submitted.

Investigators are reviewing documents and interviewing staff to determine whether others were involved in the scheme.

A series of targeted killings in Chattogram city over the past 20 months has left at least 30 people dead, with police accused of failing to take preventive action despite prior warnings. Victims often received threats and even filed general diaries (GDs) at local police stations, yet no protective measures were taken. The latest incident occurred in Bayezid Bostami area, where 24-year-old Hasan Raju was shot dead by masked assailants, and a 12-year-old girl was injured.

Families of victims and local residents allege a recurring pattern: threats, complaints, police inaction, and subsequent murders. Lawyers and human rights activists say GDs are routinely filed away without investigation or follow-up. Police officials, however, claim they act according to procedure. In Rauzan upazila alone, 17 killings have occurred in less than two years, mostly linked to political rivalries.

Security analysts and former police officers argue that political patronage and lack of preventive policing have allowed armed groups and youth gangs to operate freely. Experts recommend a special task force under the Home Ministry, regular arms recovery drives, and mandatory investigation of threat reports within 48 hours to curb the violence.

A report by Amar Desh on May 9, 2026, reveals that 361 students of Dhaka University were subjected to torture by members of the banned Chhatra League between 2009 and 2023. Victims include Monir Uddin, a student of the Arabic Department, and Ehsan Rafiq, a student of Disaster Science, both of whom suffered severe physical and psychological harm. The incidents occurred in various halls, often in so-called 'guest rooms' or 'torture cells,' with victims later handed over to police instead of being hospitalized.

Data compiled from organizations such as the Justice Foundation, Campus Nipeeron-Protirodh Shomaj, and Students Against Torture (SAT) indicate that over 2,000 Chhatra League leaders were involved in these acts. Despite repeated appeals, most victims have not received justice, and many perpetrators reportedly hold government or administrative positions. University authorities and law enforcement agencies have been accused of negligence and reluctance to register cases.

Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor A.B.M. Obaidul Islam stated that the administration is aware of past abuses and will take humanitarian steps to help affected students complete their education.

A massive fire broke out on Friday evening at a foam recycling factory in the densely populated Kadamtali area of Dhaka, spreading panic among residents. The blaze, fueled by foam, tire materials, and fabric, quickly intensified and spread to a nearby semi-pucca building. Five units of the Fire Service managed to bring the fire under control at 9:05 p.m. after three hours of effort. One firefighter fell ill from excessive heat and was hospitalized.

Fire officials said the factory was located about 500 yards inside a narrow alley, making firefighting operations difficult due to limited access and water shortages. Assistant Director Kazi Nazmuzzaman stated that water was pumped from a nearby pond to contain the flames, preventing the fire from spreading to adjacent residential buildings and shops. The factory stored large amounts of flammable foam and materials used in mattress production, which caused the fire to spread rapidly.

Preliminary findings suggest an electrical short circuit may have triggered the fire. Authorities will determine the exact cause and damage after a full investigation once the debris is cleared.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has filed a money laundering case against Mohammad Noor Ali, chairman of Unique Group, and his construction company Borak Real Estate Private Limited. The case, lodged at Banani Police Station under the Money Laundering Prevention Act 2012, concerns alleged irregularities, fraud, and illegal fund transfers linked to the 'Banani Super Market cum Housing' project built on government land controlled by Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).

CID’s preliminary investigation found that Borak Real Estate violated its contract by constructing a 28-storey building instead of the approved 14-storey structure, later housing a five-star hotel named Sheraton. The company allegedly failed to hand over DNCC’s due share and repeatedly influenced contract revisions. Investigators also discovered that necessary clearances from RAJUK and the Civil Aviation Authority were not obtained, creating flight safety risks due to excessive building height.

According to the case, the accused earned Tk 115.58 crore illegally through hotel operations in the unapproved building and laundered the funds through transfer and conversion. CID’s Financial Crime Division continues to investigate and pursue the suspects.

A Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court has rejected a case filed against former Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus, former interim government law adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul, and 14 others over the Milestone School and College plane crash that killed students in Uttara. The case was filed on Thursday morning by Usaimong Marma, father of a deceased student, before Magistrate Ariful Islam’s court. After recording the plaintiff’s statement, the court later dismissed the application, citing insufficient grounds to accept the case. Court assistant Shahadat Hossain confirmed the dismissal order.

According to the case details, on July 21, 2025, an F-7 BGI training aircraft under the supervision of the accused crashed into Milestone School and College, killing 35 people, including 28 students, and injuring 172 others. The plaintiff alleged that the aircraft was defective and that the school lacked proper fire safety measures and construction compliance, which hindered rescue operations.

The crash also killed the pilot, Flight Lieutenant Md. Taufiq Islam. The court’s decision effectively ends this particular attempt to bring criminal charges related to the tragedy.

A US federal judge has made public an alleged suicide note said to have been written by late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The document was released on Wednesday following a petition by The New York Times to the White Plains court. Epstein’s former cellmate, Nicholas Tartaglione, claimed he received the note in July 2019 after Epstein’s first failed suicide attempt. Epstein was later found dead in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City.

The note, which bears no signature, reportedly contained statements of frustration but its authenticity remains unverified. The Guardian said it could not confirm whether Epstein actually wrote it, and the US Department of Justice did not immediately comment. Tartaglione, a former police officer serving a life sentence for four murders, had given the note to his lawyers, who consulted handwriting experts to identify its author. The note had been kept confidential under attorney-client privilege during Tartaglione’s appeal process.

Epstein’s death was officially ruled a suicide by New York City’s medical examiner in 2019, though speculation and conspiracy theories persist due to his ties with influential figures.
