Police in Brahmanbaria have arrested a doctor couple, Dr. Noman and his wife Dr. Kimia Sadat Tofa, on charges of torturing their 10-year-old domestic worker, Ayesha Akter. The arrest took place on Thursday afternoon in the Uttar Mourail area of Brahmanbaria town, and the couple was later sent to court. Ayesha, daughter of Rakib Mia and Nargis Begum from Pakshimul village in Sarail upazila, was admitted to Brahmanbaria General Hospital on Wednesday evening with multiple injury marks on her body.
According to Ayesha’s family, she had been working at the couple’s home for about nine months, but contact with her had been cut off for the past three months. The couple reportedly told the family that Ayesha had stolen valuables and fled. After failing to locate her, the family filed a general diary on April 26. Police later rescued Ayesha from a nearby house and handed her over to her family, who then took her to the hospital.
Dr. Noman denied the torture allegations, claiming Ayesha had stolen gold and cash before fleeing. Police confirmed that a case was filed by Ayesha’s father and that the couple was arrested based on that complaint.

A major fire broke out at a tin-shed ink manufacturing factory in Amulia Model Town, Demra, on Thursday, April 30, 2026, around 11:30 a.m. According to Fire Service Inspector Anwarul Islam, the Demra Fire Station dispatched two units immediately after receiving the alert at 11:38 a.m., reaching the site by 11:55 a.m. As the fire intensified, additional units from Siddikbazar and Khilgaon fire stations joined, bringing the total to eight units working to control the blaze.
Local sources reported that the fire spread rapidly due to the flammable materials inside the tin-shed structure, causing panic among nearby residents. Many people evacuated to safer areas as smoke and flames engulfed the factory. Firefighters continued their efforts to bring the situation under control, while law enforcement personnel were deployed to maintain order at the scene.
As of the latest update, no casualties or damage estimates were confirmed, and the cause of the fire remained unknown.
Eight fire units fight major blaze at ink factory in Demra, Dhaka
The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered 732 pieces of Indian cosmetic products during an operation near the Dewanganj border area of Jamalpur. The raid took place on Wednesday night near border pillar 1076 in the Kumarer Char area. The 35 BGB Battalion headquarters confirmed the seizure through a press release on Thursday morning.
According to the report, the operation was conducted based on BGB’s own intelligence information. The seized cosmetics were later handed over to the Roumari Customs authorities on Thursday. The 35 BGB Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Hasanur Rahman, stated that anti-smuggling and anti-drug operations along the border are continuing.
The operation reflects ongoing efforts by BGB to curb illegal cross-border trade and smuggling activities in the region.
BGB seizes 732 Indian cosmetics in anti-smuggling operation near Jamalpur border
Seven suspected drug dealers were arrested in Tongi, Gazipur, after attacking police officers during an anti-drug operation on Wednesday night. The Gazipur Metropolitan Police team conducted the raid at Himarydighi Amtali Keranirtek slum, where the suspects surrounded the officers and attempted to assault them. Several officers, including constables Ariful Islam, Rakibul Islam, Jahanara Islam, and SI (unarmed) Nure Alam, were injured in the attack. Police later detained Shahin Ahmed Rizvi, Sohel, Raihan, Rowshan Ara, Sumi Akter, Nurjahan, and Beauty Akter, while alleged top drug dealer Runa Akter escaped.
According to Gazipur Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) Md. Belayet Hossain, a case has been filed with Tongi East Police Station over the incident. Officer-in-Charge Md. Mehedi Hasan stated that the arrested individuals are being processed for transfer to the Gazipur District and Sessions Judge Court.
The arrested Shahin Ahmed Rizvi is identified as a candidate for the Tongi East Thana Jubo Dal president post and a contestant for the Gazipur City Corporation’s Ward 46 councilor position.
Seven arrested after attacking police during anti-drug raid in Tongi, Gazipur
Law enforcement officials in Banshkhali, Chattogram, seized 100,000 yaba tablets valued at approximately Tk 30 million during an operation on Wednesday evening. The raid was conducted by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) near Banshkhali Girls College, where officers set up a checkpoint and searched a CNG-run auto-rickshaw used for drug transport. Three suspected drug traffickers were detained, and the vehicle was confiscated.
According to RAB-7 Assistant Director and Assistant Superintendent of Police A.R.M. Mozzafar Hossain, the operation was based on secret intelligence. Preliminary interrogation revealed that the detainees had allegedly been involved in collecting drugs from border areas and distributing them across different parts of the country. Legal proceedings against the suspects are currently underway.
The arrested individuals were identified as Salim Ullah from Sonapara in Cox’s Bazar, Hasan Murad from Kutubjum in Maheshkhali, and Majid Alam alias Morjan from the same area.
RAB arrests three in Banshkhali with yaba tablets worth Tk 30 million
A court in Kushtia has sentenced Jony Hossain, also known as Rajim, to life imprisonment for raping a college student under the false promise of marriage. The verdict was delivered on Wednesday afternoon by Judge Zainal Abedin of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in Kushtia, in the absence of the accused. Jony, aged 30, from Bahirchar Union in Veramara upazila, was also fined 100,000 taka, with an additional six months of imprisonment if unpaid.
According to the case details, Jony met the victim through social media, falsely claiming to be a member of the armed forces. He first raped her on January 1, 2022, when her parents were away, and continued the assaults under the pretext of marriage, leading to her pregnancy. When the matter became known, he demanded 800,000 taka from the victim’s family, which her expatriate father paid. After receiving the money, Jony cut off contact and tried to defame her.
The victim gave birth to a son on March 2, 2023, and filed a case on June 22, 2023. DNA tests confirmed Jony’s involvement, leading to his conviction. He was arrested in July 2023 but later released on bail and is currently absconding.
Kushtia court gives life term to man for raping student under false marriage promise
A Dhaka court has granted a three-day remand for former Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) officer and dismissed Major Manzil Haider Chowdhury in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Ramna Police Station. The order was issued on Thursday by Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Jamshed Alam after a hearing. The prosecution was represented by state lawyer Shamsuddoha Suman, while the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Md. Amjad Hossain Talukder, sought a four-day remand for interrogation.
According to the case documents, investigators alleged that Manzil Haider had used his influence as a close associate of former military adviser Tarique Siddiqi to suppress a student movement and later financed and advised banned organizations, including the Awami League and its affiliates, after a change of government. The investigation also claimed his involvement in secret meetings and conspiratorial activities in Dhaka.
The defense lawyers sought bail and cancellation of the remand petition, which the prosecution opposed. After hearing both sides, the court approved the three-day remand. The case originated from a September 12 incident in Ramna, where members of a banned group held an anti-government rally, leading to arrests and the filing of the case.
Dhaka court orders three-day remand for ex-DGFI officer Manzil Haider in anti-terror case
A Dhaka court has granted a fresh four-day remand for former army officer and ex-MP Masud Uddin Chowdhury for interrogation in the murder case of Delwar Hossain. The order was issued on Thursday, April 30, 2026, by Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Manjurul Islam. The case is linked to the killing that occurred during an anti-discrimination movement in Mirpur, Dhaka. State lawyer Shamsuddoha Suman confirmed the court’s decision following a hearing.
Before the order, Chowdhury was produced before the court, and the investigation officer, DB Mirpur Sub-Inspector Kofil Uddin, sought a four-day remand. The prosecution supported the remand request, while defense lawyer Towhidul Islam Sajib argued for its cancellation. After hearing both sides, the court approved the remand.
According to the case details, Delwar Hossain was shot and later died in July 2024 during a protest in Mirpur. The case was filed in July 2025, and Chowdhury was arrested from his Baridhara DOHS residence on March 23, 2026. He had previously been remanded in other related cases.
Dhaka court orders four-day remand for ex-MP Masud Uddin in Delwar murder case
A sub-assistant engineer of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) in Brahmanbaria’s Nabinagar has been transferred following an attack by a contractor. On April 23, an order signed by supervising engineer Md Wahiduzzaman on behalf of the chief engineer directed the transfer of Mirza Tarikul Islam to Dewanganj in Jamalpur. The incident occurred on April 13 when a team of LGED engineers visited the Merkuta GC–Shibpur Bazar R&H road to inspect alleged substandard construction work. Contractor Lokman reportedly obstructed them and chased Mirza Tarikul Islam with a bamboo stick. A video of the attack later circulated on Facebook, and a case was filed that evening.
Seventeen days after the incident, the main accused Lokman Hossain remains at large, though his driver Billal Hossain and manager Forqan have been arrested. According to LGED sources, Rajshahi-based Messrs Barendra Construction Limited received the contract to build the 4.5-kilometer road from Merkuta Bazar to Shibpur at an estimated cost of Tk 14.63 crore. Lokman Hossain was overseeing the project, which had drawn local complaints about poor-quality work.
LGED engineer attacked by contractor in Brahmanbaria transferred; main accused still missing
Authorities in Dasar upazila of Madaripur seized a truck carrying 422 sacks of rice allocated under the government’s Vulnerable Group Development (VGD) program. The operation took place on Tuesday, April 28, in the Bhanga Bridge area. Truck seized in Dasar with 422 sacks of government VGD rice for the poor
Police in Boalmari upazila of Faridpur arrested a suspected drug dealer with yaba tablets on Wednesday, April 29, 2026. The arrest took place around 2:30 p.m. at Beradi Bazar in Satair Union. The detainee was identified as Dip Kumar Acharya Roni, 31, son of the late Ratan Kumar Acharya of Kandakul village. Officers recovered 51 yaba pills from his possession during the operation.
According to police sources, the arrest followed a tip-off that the suspect was in the area to sell yaba. Acting on the information, a team conducted a raid and detained him with the drugs. Boalmari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Anwar Hossain confirmed the arrest and said the suspect would be sent to court on Thursday.

Police arrest man with 51 yaba pills in Boalmari, Faridpur
A farmer named Nurjamal, aged 54, died after being struck by lightning in Amtali upazila of Barguna district. The incident occurred on Wednesday around 4 p.m. when he went to catch fish in a canal near his house in Pujakhola village during rainfall. He died on the spot due to the lightning strike.
Following the incident, Amtali Upazila Nirbahi Officer Muhammad Zafar Arif Chowdhury visited the victim’s home and provided the family with a financial grant of twenty-five thousand taka. The report did not mention any further details about the family or additional official statements.
The event highlights the recurring risk of lightning strikes in rural areas during seasonal rains, prompting local authorities to extend immediate support to affected families.
Farmer killed by lightning in Amtali; local official gives financial aid
Three police officers from Gazipur Metropolitan’s Konabari area have been withdrawn following allegations of abducting, assaulting, and extorting money from a businessman. The officers—ASI Azizul Haque, constables Nazmul Hossain, and Mamun Hossain—were attached to the police lines after the complaint. The alleged incident occurred on Monday night when businessman Delwar Hossain was forcibly taken from the Baimaile area, beaten, and threatened with a false drug case before being robbed of 28,400 taka.
According to the written complaint, another youth named Sifat was also detained and intimidated for having an online gambling app on his phone. Police allegedly took additional money from Delwar’s mobile account and later returned only a small portion. Delwar filed a formal complaint the next day seeking investigation and recovery of the extorted funds. ASI Azizul Haque denied all allegations, while Sifat confirmed the incident but declined to elaborate.
Assistant Police Commissioner Abu Naser Al-Amin stated that the accused officers were withdrawn pending investigation and that further legal action would follow based on the findings.
Three Gazipur police officers withdrawn over abduction and extortion allegations
A Chattogram court has sentenced seven people to life imprisonment for the murder of expatriate Md. Rafique in the Amirbag area of the city. The verdict was delivered on Wednesday by Judge Muhammad Ali Akkas of the Sixth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court, nearly twenty years after the case began. Along with life imprisonment, each convict was fined 25,000 taka, with an additional one-year jail term in case of non-payment. Eight other accused were acquitted due to lack of evidence.
According to the prosecution, Rafique, who had returned from the United Arab Emirates in July 2007, went missing on August 14 of the same year after leaving his in-laws’ house in the Kadamtali area. Later that night, his body was found at Chattogram Medical College Hospital, and it was revealed that he had been killed and left in Amirbag. His brother Zakir Hossain Lulu filed a murder case with Kotwali Police Station.
Four convicts were present in court during the verdict, while three others were absent. Arrest warrants have been issued for the absconding convicts.
Seven get life imprisonment for expatriate Rafique’s murder in Chattogram
The High Court has granted bail to Sheikh Tasnim Afroze Imi, former vice president of Shamsunnahar Hall Students’ Union at Dhaka University, in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act. The order was issued on Thursday by a bench comprising Justice K M Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher. Advocate Motahar Hossain Saju represented Imi during the hearing.
According to the case details, on the night of March 7 this year, around 9:30 p.m., Imi and several others announced a program to play a historic speech in front of Shahbagh Police Station. While they were broadcasting the speech from a rickshaw, a group of Dhaka University students, including Daksu leader A B Zubair, Mosaddeq Ali Ibn Mohammad, and National Student Power convener Tahmid Al Modassir, obstructed them. Subsequently, Zubair and Mosaddeq allegedly forced Imi and another person into the Shahbagh Police Station, where police detained them.
The following day, police showed the three detainees arrested under the Anti-Terrorism Act and sent them to jail. The case was filed by police as the complainant.
