BNP leader Ishraq Hossain has filed a writ petition in the High Court seeking to be sworn in as Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). This follows the court's earlier dismissal of a petition that sought to block his swearing-in, stating the petition was filed in the wrong forum and lacked jurisdiction.

A Dhaka court has issued arrest warrants against two individuals—former journalist union leader Khairul Alam and alleged Awami League donor Asaduzzaman Asad—in a defamation case filed by Jugantor Editor Abdul Hai Shikder. Another accused, Mahbub Morshed of BSS, remains out on bail, with his bail extended until the next hearing.

Ali Riaz, Chair of the National Consensus Commission, stressed that meaningful reform is not possible without civil society engagement. He noted that while the commission has held discussions with 33 political parties over six months, full consensus has not been reached on all issues. He underscored the importance of creating a national charter and treating this opportunity with the seriousness it deserves, promising transparency on unresolved issues.

Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam clarified that while Bangladesh welcomes investments from global corporations in Chattogram Port's terminals, the port itself is not being handed over to any entity. He confirmed foreign investors have already pledged $3 billion. Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Mohammad Ejaz announced that homes in Gulshan, Banani, and surrounding areas that discharge sewage directly into lakes and water bodies will be marked with red paint. He emphasized that every home must have a septic tank as per RAJUK regulations. The DNCC will also begin a post-Eid eviction drive to clear illegal encroachments from roads and sidewalks. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has frozen 35 bank accounts linked to journalist Munni Saha and her affiliates, totaling Tk 181.6 million. According to CID’s Special Superintendent of Police (Media), Jasim Uddin Khan, the accounts belong to Saha, her husband Kabir Hossain, and their associated individuals and organizations. The CID alleges that the couple misused their journalistic platform to illegally earn money through influence, fraud, and extortion. The illicit funds were reportedly laundered through these accounts. The freeze follows an investigation by the CID’s Financial Crime Unit.

Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson for the Inqilab Manch, has called for the formation of a national government within the next few months, uniting all anti-fascist political forces. He warned that if BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami do not cooperate, they must be held accountable before the nation. The proposed national government would last 10 to 12 months. If such a government cannot be formed, he urged the creation of a National Unity Council led by Dr. Yunus, composed of party representatives with cabinet-level status who would function as watchdogs, not ministers. Interim government adviser Rizwana Hasan has declared that factories using underground water must pay a usage fee. This initiative aims to curb river and reservoir pollution and enforce the reuse of industrial wastewater. She also revealed that an action plan is being formulated to recover and protect four major rivers around Dhaka. "We won’t be able to complete all tasks within our tenure," she said, "but we will begin restoring the Turag River and prioritize reclaiming Gacha canal, Lobondaha, and illegally occupied forest land after August 8."

Government employees held a protest march inside the Secretariat on Sunday against controversial provisions in the amended Public Service Ordinance 2025. The protestors demanded the removal of what they termed "draconian and black" clauses. Failing to meet the legal adviser, they met with the Law Secretary, who assured that their concerns would be reviewed sympathetically. Public Administration Senior Secretary Mokhlesur Rahman stated, "No ordinance will be finalized without discussions with employee representatives." Notably, the ordinance includes a clause requiring the trial of accused public servants within 25 days.

The Anti-Discrimination Employee Unity Forum announced a protest for Sunday at 10 a.m. in front of the Cabinet Division and Ministry of Public Administration. The group demands the removal of controversial pro-Awami League officials appointed on contract. They expressed solidarity with ongoing protests by student groups and civil society, including the July Unity, calling for a bureaucracy free from partisan influence.

The Bangladesh Police Service Association has issued a strong condemnation in response to a viral video of Gono Odhikar Parishad (GOP) President Nurul Haque Nur making threats against the police.

In the video, Nur is heard saying: “If the police lay a hand on us, that hand won’t remain intact. Just like in Jatrabari, where the public beat police officers and hung them from the bridge — if any activist of Gono Odhikar Parishad is harmed, similar consequences will follow.”

The Police Service Association denounced the statement as highly inappropriate and unacceptable, emphasizing that while constructive criticism is welcome, such remarks constitute a direct threat to law enforcement. They further stated that this kind of incitement is not only irresponsible but also amounts to a criminal offense under the law.

A rally titled ‘March for Yunus’ was held at Shahbagh, demanding that Dr. Muhammad Yunus be made the President of Bangladesh. Organizers of the event also called for the formation of a national government.

They presented three additional demands: constitutional reforms, prosecution of the ruling Awami League for the alleged “July massacre,” and a five-year mandate for Dr. Yunus.

Shahbagh police station’s Officer-in-Charge Khalid Mansur confirmed the rally, stating that it was organized by the Inqibal Mancha and attended by a small group of people.

Chaired by the Chief Adviser, the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved nine development projects, including a major upgrade of the grid power evacuation system. The total estimated cost for these projects is BDT 11,851 crore. Of this, BDT 8,046 crore will come from government funds, BDT 2,988 crore from foreign aid, and BDT 816 crore from the implementing agencies’ own funds.

The United Nations Refugee Agency has reported that two separate boat accidents off the coast of Myanmar’s Rakhine State have left 427 Rohingya people missing. On May 9, a motorized boat carrying 267 Rohingyas capsized after setting off from the Arakan coast, with only 66 survivors. On May 10, another wooden motorboat carrying 247 people also sank shortly after departure; only 21 passengers survived. The intended destinations of the vessels remain unknown.
