U.S. President Donald Trump has said that Iran’s newly appointed supreme leader will not remain in power for long without his approval. Speaking to ABC News, Trump stated that the new leader must seek authorization from the United States, otherwise his leadership will not endure.
Iran has announced Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as the country’s new supreme leader. The decision was made by the 88-member Assembly of Experts, which elects the supreme leader. The assembly also called on citizens to support the new leader following the announcement.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed on February 28 in a joint U.S.-Israeli strike that also claimed the lives of his wife, daughter, and several senior military officials, according to Iranian state media reports.
Trump says Iran’s new leader will not last without U.S. approval after Khamenei’s death
Iran has appointed Mojtaba Khamenei as its new Supreme Leader, a move analysts interpret as both a signal of continuity within the country’s religious leadership and a message of defiance toward the United States and Israel. The appointment was reported on March 9, 2026, with observers noting that the decision underscores Iran’s intent to maintain its existing ideological and political direction.
Rami Khouri, a political analyst at the American University of Beirut, told Al Jazeera that the selection represents a challenge to Washington and Tel Aviv, suggesting Iran’s leadership is asserting resilience against external pressure. He described Mojtaba as potentially even more hardline than his late father, reinforcing the image of steadfastness within Iran’s ruling structure.
Analysts further noted that Mojtaba Khamenei’s elevation reflects the entrenched power of Iran’s religious and political establishment. The long-term consequences of this leadership transition remain to be seen.
Analysts say Mojtaba Khamenei’s rise signals defiance toward US and Israel
Iran has announced Mojtaba Khamenei as its new Supreme Leader, following the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The decision was made by the Assembly of Experts, a body of 88 religious figures responsible for selecting the country’s highest authority. The announcement was broadcast by Iran’s state media on Monday night, Bangladesh time, and the Assembly called for public support for the new leader.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed on February 28 in a joint U.S.-Israel attack that also claimed the lives of his wife, daughter, and several senior military officials. According to Al Jazeera, Mojtaba Khamenei, aged 56, has never held a government position or contested an election but has long been influential in Iran’s internal politics and maintains close ties with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump stated two days earlier that Mojtaba’s appointment would be unacceptable to Washington, insisting on U.S. involvement in Iran’s leadership selection. The Assembly of Experts, however, proceeded with the appointment, making Mojtaba Khamenei the third Supreme Leader since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

The Jagannath University branch of the University Teachers Association of Bangladesh (UTAB) has demanded the resignation of the university’s current vice-chancellor. In a press release signed by branch president Professor Dr. Mohammad Nasir Uddin on Sunday, the organization alleged that the vice-chancellor has prioritized political agendas over institutional development, leading to instability on campus.
According to the statement, Jagannath College was converted into a university in 2005 but has since struggled to achieve its goals due to political influences. Following the mass uprising of August 5, 2024, controversies reportedly arose over the appointment of the current vice-chancellor. Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has expressed strong dissatisfaction over the lack of transparency in state decision-making and the continued ineffectiveness of the Information Commission. At a press conference organized by the Right to Information Forum in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi on Sunday, TIB Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman said that even during the interim government, there was a lack of goodwill in ensuring the right to information, and many government decisions were made in secrecy.
He stated that despite the existence of the Right to Information Act, the commission had been rendered ineffective during the 16 years of the Awami League government, and the same situation persisted under the interim administration. He added that the failure to form the commission for one and a half years, despite legal obligations, was embarrassing and reflected a disregard for public trust.
The Right to Information Forum presented several demands to improve access to information, including forming a politically neutral commission, incorporating proposed amendments before presenting the ordinance to parliament, and ensuring public consultation before finalizing any legal changes.
