In Patuakhali’s Dumki upazila, a woman named Asiya Begum from Pangasia Union has reportedly been denied a widow allowance card for nearly twenty years since her husband’s death in 2007. Now elderly and caring for a physically disabled son, she survives by begging from door to door. Despite repeated applications and appeals to local representatives, she claims no assistance has been provided.

Residents of South Pangasia expressed anger, questioning why a destitute woman like Asiya remains excluded from government benefits while wealthier or politically connected families receive them. They alleged that her poverty and inability to pay unofficial fees may have kept her name off the beneficiary list.

Pangasia Union Parishad Chairman Nazrul Islam Gazi responded by asking whether she had formally applied, while the local social services officer, Oliul Islam, stated that Asiya’s name was not included in the list sent by the union. He added that if the chairman submits her name, action will be taken.

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has issued a clarification following reactions from the home minister, the national parliament, and the police regarding its report titled “First 100 Days of the Post-13th National Election Government: Monitoring Governance and Anti-Corruption Commitments.” In a statement released on Tuesday, TIB said the responses from these authorities have encouraged the organization and will help make its research and governance activities more effective.

TIB emphasized that it is not an investigative agency but a research-based organization working on anti-corruption and good governance through public awareness and engagement. The group explained that its report was prepared using both qualitative and quantitative methods recognized in social science research, drawing data from direct and indirect sources, including the Bangladesh Police and three human rights organizations. It rejected the claim that the report was based solely on newspaper clippings, stating that media information is verified against multiple official and non-governmental sources before analysis.

TIB also noted that the police did not directly dispute its observation that law and order remained a concern, though comparative analysis with previous periods was beyond the study’s scope.

Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Affairs Adviser Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman said that Awami League leaders and activists, whose political activities are currently banned, will be allowed to participate in the upcoming local government elections if they meet specific conditions. He made the remarks on Tuesday afternoon during a press conference at the Department of Information in the Secretariat.

Dr. Rahman clarified that since the Awami League’s organizational activities are suspended, no one can use the party’s name or position in the election. However, individuals may contest independently if they fulfill the required criteria. He added that if an independent candidate uses Awami League slogans or campaign materials, it would be considered a violation.

The adviser also discussed other issues, including the proposed Teesta barrage or reservoir project, which could cost around Tk 20,000 crore and may be funded by the Bangladesh government, though foreign assistance would be welcome. On the issue of push-ins from India, he said these were not pressure tactics but part of West Bengal’s election pledges, and both governments are expected to resolve the matter soon.

Leaders and activists of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League organized a human chain protest in front of Jagannath University’s third gate on Tuesday morning, June 9, 2026. During the event, they raised six demands, including withdrawal of expulsion orders and cases against Chhatra League members, ending political recruitment under the guise of quota reform, unconditional release of detained activists, and exemplary punishment for crimes such as child abuse, rape, and online harassment. Posters displayed images of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Sheikh Hasina, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and central Chhatra League leaders.

Organizers Ashiq-e-Athahar Mesbah and Mehedi Hasan led the program, describing it as inspired by the historic six-point movement. They alleged that after August 5, Chhatra League activists and pro-liberation teachers faced harassment and false cases. Jagannath University Chhatra League president Ibrahim Farazi stated that the organization remains politically active and aims to remove the current government through continued street movements.

University proctor Professor Mohammad Nasir Uddin said he was not yet officially informed but confirmed that security officials and law enforcement agencies were notified to investigate and take legal action against those involved.

The Appellate Division of Bangladesh has suspended a High Court order that directed the formation of an independent Supreme Court Secretariat within three months. The suspension order was issued on Tuesday by a bench led by the Chief Justice following a petition from the state. The appellate hearing is scheduled to begin on June 16.

Earlier in the day, the appeal hearing against the High Court’s full verdict had begun. The state filed the appeal on May 21, challenging the High Court’s April 7 judgment, which spanned 185 pages and mandated the establishment of an independent secretariat for the Supreme Court. The original verdict was delivered on September 2 by a bench comprising Justice Ahmed Sohel and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury.

The High Court’s ruling had also annulled the constitutional provision granting the President authority over magistrates’ control and discipline, transferring that responsibility to the Supreme Court, and invalidated the 2017 disciplinary rules for subordinate courts.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is determined to derail a nearly finalized ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, according to the report. As Washington and Tehran move toward a truce, Netanyahu, who faces war crimes charges at the International Criminal Court, views any settlement that leaves Iran intact as a defeat. He is reportedly using political, military, diplomatic, media, and lobbying tools to prevent U.S. President Donald Trump from signing the memorandum of understanding. Netanyahu rejects any compromise that does not disarm Hamas and Islamic Jihad in Gaza, dismantle Hezbollah in Lebanon, and neutralize Iran.

The article describes how Netanyahu’s opposition stems from his belief that peace would expose him to corruption trials and end his political career. Meanwhile, Trump faces domestic pressure as public support for prolonged Middle East wars declines. Recent U.S. polls show growing skepticism about the rationale for the Iran conflict, even within Trump’s own party. The war has also strained U.S. military resources, with reports of damaged bases and depleted missile stockpiles.

Diplomatic efforts led by Pakistan and supported by Arab and Islamic states have brought a 60-day regional ceasefire proposal close to conclusion. However, Netanyahu continues to resist, fearing it would strengthen Iran’s position in future negotiations.

Several contracting firms in Chattogram have alleged that tender conditions under the Department of Livestock were deliberately designed to favor two companies linked to a local Awami League leader. The tenders, issued through the e-GP system for supplying feed and medicine to poultry farms, reportedly included technical requirements that made participation difficult for most bidders. The Ministry of Livestock is investigating the allegations.

Documents and written complaints reviewed by the newspaper indicate that the tenders imposed manufacturer authorization requirements for imported products, effectively excluding many suppliers. Contractors claim that the favored firms, owned by a former Sitakunda Awami League leader now in hiding, have dominated such contracts for 17 years. Multiple firms have petitioned the Directorate of Livestock to relax restrictive conditions and ensure fair competition.

Officials involved in the tender process have denied any wrongdoing, stating that all procedures followed public procurement rules. However, complainants insist that the restrictive terms undermine open competition and could lead to financial losses for the government if not addressed.

The trial of former Food Minister Kamrul Islam and Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon begins today at the International Crimes Tribunal-1 in Dhaka. The case involves allegations of crimes against humanity related to killings during the July Revolution. The proceedings are being led by Tribunal Chairman Justice Golam Mortuza Majumder, with Justices Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury serving as panel members. The opening statement is scheduled to mark the formal start of the trial, followed by the recording of the first witness testimony.

Earlier, on April 30, the tribunal rejected the defendants’ petitions seeking discharge from the charges and formally framed charges against them, paving the way for the trial to proceed. The case marks a significant development in the tribunal’s ongoing efforts to address historical crimes committed during political upheavals in Bangladesh.

The tribunal’s decision to move forward with the trial indicates a continuation of judicial processes concerning alleged wartime and political crimes, with further hearings expected in the coming weeks.

A tense atmosphere prevailed at the 57th border conference between Bangladesh and India, which began on June 8 at the BSF headquarters in New Delhi. The meeting saw sharp exchanges between the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) delegation led by Major General Muhammad Ashrafulzaman Siddiqui and the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) team headed by Director General Praveen Kumar. The BGB strongly protested alleged forced push-ins of Bangladeshis and border killings, demanding an immediate end to such incidents. The BSF countered by accusing cross-border intrusions, fence cutting, and attacks on its personnel, calling these acts threats to India’s national security.

Despite the heated debate, both sides agreed to cooperate against human trafficking, drug and arms smuggling, and to prevent illegal construction within 150 yards of the border. They emphasized maintaining coordination and communication to ensure peace and stability along the frontier.

Separately, the BSF removed ten people from the zero line at Panchagarh’s Borobari border after a 70-hour standoff over a push-in attempt, ending the local deadlock late Sunday night.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has told his supporters that he is ready to fight to retain his leadership of the Labour Party. He confirmed that he would take part in any leadership contest if one were to occur, according to a BBC report on Sunday. Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy also stated that Starmer would join any such contest, noting that it would require signatures from 81 MPs to proceed.

The leadership question has intensified after Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham expressed interest in joining a potential leadership race. Starmer and his allies argue that a contest would create instability within both the party and the country. They emphasize that Starmer must fulfill the strong mandate he received two years ago.

Following poor results in recent local elections, calls for Starmer’s resignation have grown within the Labour Party. The outcome of the upcoming June 18 by-election in Makerfield is expected to influence his leadership position, with Burnham’s success seen as crucial for strengthening his standing within the party.

Three major local government elections in Bangladesh—city corporation, municipality, and upazila parishad—will not be held this year, according to the Local Government Division. However, Union Parishad (UP) elections may begin in late 2026 after the national budget session concludes, when the final schedule is expected. Officials said no formal instructions have yet been issued to prepare for the polls, and all activities remain routine until directives arrive.

The government reportedly views the upcoming UP election as a test of its grassroots popularity following the political transition earlier in 2026. After the fall of the Awami League government in August 2024 and the formation of a new administration led by Tarique Rahman in February 2026, the ruling coalition is proceeding cautiously amid tight political competition. The elections are planned to be non-partisan, though speculation persists about strategic participation by major parties.

The Election Commission is revising election rules and codes of conduct to align with updated local government laws. Draft regulations will be published on June 15 for public feedback. A software-based election calendar has been developed to streamline scheduling once budget approval and legal formalities are completed.

Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, stated that diplomatic exchanges between Iran and the United States are ongoing with the aim of finalizing a potential agreement. Speaking to reporters after a UN Security Council meeting on Afghanistan, Iravani said both sides are communicating through Pakistan to prepare a draft of the final deal.

According to Iravani, Iran and the United States are exchanging views and proposals to reach a final text, though no agreement has yet been concluded. He emphasized that both countries are continuing efforts toward that goal. His remarks were published by Iran’s state news agency IRNA.

Observers view Iravani’s comments as significant amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East and recent diplomatic activity. Analysts cited in the report suggest that Pakistan’s mediation could help break the stalemate in Iran–U.S. relations and open a path toward a new understanding.

The West Bengal–based human rights organization Association for Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR) has accused India’s Border Security Force (BSF) of coercing people suspected of being Bangladeshis toward the border and attempting to push them into Bangladesh. In a statement released on Sunday, APDR announced a protest march in Malda on June 11 to oppose these alleged actions. The group linked the situation to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s earlier “Detect, Deport, Delete” policy promise, which it claims has led to the establishment of detention centers and land transfers to BSF.

According to APDR, many people, including women and children, are stranded in the no man’s land between India and Bangladesh as BSF denies responsibility for them while Bangladesh’s Border Guard (BGB) refuses entry. The organization said the stranded individuals face severe hardship due to lack of food, water, and shelter, creating a humanitarian crisis.

APDR’s vice president Ranjit Sur demanded the immediate repeal of the “Three D” policy, the return of stranded people to safety, and the suspension of pushback operations. He also urged the UN Human Rights Council to intervene, warning that the situation risks crimes against humanity.
