Bangladesh’s opposition leader and Jamaat-e-Islami chief Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has condemned the government’s decision to raise fuel prices without any discussion in parliament, calling it a deception against the people. Speaking to reporters in Badaghat Sonatola village of Sylhet after visiting the family of murdered child Fahima, he said the recent fuel price hikes—about 15 percent last month and an additional five taka per liter this month—will increase costs across all sectors and hurt ordinary citizens.
Dr. Rahman also expressed concern over the lack of progress in the Fahima murder investigation, which has seen no visible advancement after 28 days. He demanded exemplary punishment for those involved and urged the government to ensure swift justice, similar to the Ramisa murder case in the capital. He further criticized the government’s handling of the measles outbreak, questioning why vaccines were not procured in time.
He pledged legal and moral support for Fahima’s family and called on local residents to stand by them. Rahman warned that failure to deliver justice and maintain law and order would undermine the government’s legitimacy.

A youth leader named Hasibul Hossain Liton, known for appearing on stage with BNP activists in Dhamrai, was arrested in Dhanmondi, Dhaka, after chanting the slogan 'Joy Bangla' on Monday night. Police detained him in front of Takwa Mosque when he attempted to lead a procession following the funeral of former Awami League minister Tofail Ahmed. Akhtar Hossain, Member Secretary of the NCP and Member of Parliament for Rangpur-4 (Kaunia-Pirgacha), has stated that the government’s special allocation of 1 million taka for the poor and helpless people during Eid-ul-Fitr was distributed transparently and properly. On Tuesday afternoon, he presented a detailed account of the spending before the public at the Tapar Bridge area in Kaunia.
Hossain explained that although 1 million taka may seem like a large sum, it is limited compared to the large population of his constituency. He noted that if each beneficiary received 1,000 taka, only about 1,000 people could be helped, while the constituency has 140 wards. As a result, only five to six people per ward could receive assistance. He assured that those left out this time would be prioritized in the next allocation.
He added that as a representative elected for five years, he aims to stand by all constituents gradually and that public disclosure of spending ensures transparency and accountability in government aid distribution.

A BNP leader in Cumilla’s Daudkandi has been accused of illegally taking control of government land originally allocated to a landless person for rehabilitation and farming. The land, granted to Masud Alam in the 1989–90 fiscal year, was reportedly occupied by Abul Hashem, joint convener of Cumilla North District BNP, who is also Alam’s cousin. Locals allege that Hashem has held the land for 36 years and is now preparing to construct a multistoried building there.
Residents claim that Hashem’s political influence has prevented any protest, while the local administration has remained inactive. Daudkandi BNP convener Abdul Latif Bhuiya described the construction as illegal and unethical, urging legal action if irregularities are proven. Hashem, however, denied the allegations, stating that he lawfully transferred the land to his name through the sub-registry office and has been using it since.
Daudkandi’s Upazila Nirbahi Officer said no formal complaint has been received, while the district commissioner confirmed that transferring or constructing on land allocated for the landless is legally prohibited.
