The nomination of Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Dr. Mosleh Uddin Farid for Jessore-2 (Jhikargacha-Chowgacha) constituency in the 13th National Parliamentary Election has been cancelled due to a credit card-related bank clearance issue. The district returning officer and Jessore Deputy Commissioner Asheq Hasan confirmed that Farid’s CIB report showed an old unpaid credit card balance, though he submitted payment proof. The delay in repayment led to the cancellation. Farid may appeal to the election appellate court and could regain candidacy if required documents are resubmitted.

In the same constituency, five other candidates faced nomination issues, including BNP leader Mohammad Ishaq, who failed to submit a party nomination. Independent candidates Mehedi Hasan and Zahurul Islam lost nominations due to signature mismatches, while BNPF candidate Shassul Haque’s nomination was kept pending. Jatiya Party candidate Firoz Shah’s nomination was cancelled following an Agrani Bank objection.

In Jessore-1 (Sharsha), BNP candidate Nuruzzaman Liton’s nomination was kept pending due to inconsistencies in case and dependent information. Candidates have until January 4 to correct errors and resubmit documents for final approval.

US President Donald Trump said he is seriously considering selling F-35 fighter jets to Turkey following a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida. The discussion took place during Netanyahu’s fifth visit to the United States since Trump’s second term began, centered on the second phase of a Gaza ceasefire plan. When asked whether the US would approve the sale, Trump said the matter was under serious consideration.

Trump described Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as a “very good friend” and assured that Turkey would not use the aircraft against Israel. He also said there would be no problems between the two nations. The US had previously suspended Turkey from the F-35 program in 2019 after Ankara purchased the Russian S-400 air defense system, imposing sanctions on several Turkish defense entities under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).

Trump added that he would discuss Turkey’s potential participation in a multinational Gaza mission with Netanyahu and maintained that his relationship with Erdogan remained strong.

Businessman Jasim Uddin Ahmed, once known as a close associate of former IGP Benazir Ahmed during the Awami League era, has been nominated by the BNP to contest from Chattogram-14 constituency. His election affidavit shows Tk 15.01 crore in cash and his wife’s legal savings of Tk 14.57 lakh. The declaration lacks clear explanations about the source, banking records, or income consistency behind such large cash holdings, sparking debate over whether old political influences still persist.

BNP insiders said Jasim was nominated at the last moment by the party’s central leadership without consulting the South District BNP, prompting internal criticism. Local sources claim he had close ties with former ministers and ex-IGPs Benazir Ahmed and Shahidul Haque. Photos of his meetings with them have circulated on social media. Jasim was previously elected as an independent chairman in the 2024 upazila polls, which BNP boycotted, and was once jailed in a 2024 attempted murder case.

South District BNP convener Idris Mia said the party likely chose Jasim for his financial capacity to challenge rival candidates, adding that local leaders would now support the central decision.

Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain said it is too early to determine whether Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s visit to Dhaka will ease existing tensions between the two countries. Speaking to reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, Hossain described the visit as a courteous gesture rather than a political event, noting that Jaishankar’s trip was brief but he attended the entire ceremony before departing.

Hossain clarified that there was no one-on-one meeting between him and Jaishankar, as the occasion did not allow for bilateral discussions. He added that Jaishankar also exchanged greetings with other South Asian dignitaries, including Pakistan’s National Assembly Speaker, calling such interactions a matter of diplomatic courtesy. The adviser emphasized that their brief conversation contained no political content.

Jaishankar, along with representatives from Pakistan, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, visited Dhaka on December 31 to pay last respects to former Bangladeshi Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia. Hossain said Zia enjoyed broad respect across South Asia, and participation by regional leaders in her funeral was natural.
