Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Social Service Secretary A.B. Jubayer has accused Awami League leader Tofail Ahmed and his associates of previously preventing the funeral prayers of Delwar Hossain Sayeedi in Dhaka and BNP leader Nure Alam in Bhola. In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Jubayer said that despite those incidents, no one is obstructing the funeral of Tofail Ahmed, describing this as an act of fairness even toward political opponents.

In his post, Jubayer alleged that Sayeedi’s body had been seized after police used tear gas and gunfire, and that many people were killed following the verdict against Sayeedi. He also referred to past killings in Bhola involving opposition activists. Jubayer emphasized that while Tofail’s funeral should proceed without obstruction, any banned organization’s activities or provocative acts under the guise of funeral gatherings would not be tolerated.

He thanked local BNP and Jubo Dal units for their roles and urged Jamaat and NCP to act responsibly, stating that political struggle should remain within political parties, not with extremist groups.

A BNP leader in Cumilla’s Daudkandi has been accused of illegally taking control of government land originally allocated to a landless person for rehabilitation and farming. The land, granted to Masud Alam in the 1989–90 fiscal year, was reportedly occupied by Abul Hashem, joint convener of Cumilla North District BNP, who is also Alam’s cousin. Locals allege that Hashem has held the land for 36 years and is now preparing to construct a multistoried building there.

Residents claim that Hashem’s political influence has prevented any protest, while the local administration has remained inactive. Daudkandi BNP convener Abdul Latif Bhuiya described the construction as illegal and unethical, urging legal action if irregularities are proven. Hashem, however, denied the allegations, stating that he lawfully transferred the land to his name through the sub-registry office and has been using it since.

Daudkandi’s Upazila Nirbahi Officer said no formal complaint has been received, while the district commissioner confirmed that transferring or constructing on land allocated for the landless is legally prohibited.

Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain stated that the prime minister was misinformed about his planned visit to Florida, United States. He made the comment on Tuesday through a Facebook post, following a viral note from the prime minister suggesting that mosquito control methods could be developed locally without traveling abroad.

In his post titled “Will misinformation and conspiracy ruin the revolutionary potential of mosquito control?”, the mayor explained that since October last year, CCC had been using mosquito larva-killing chemicals from the U.S.-based company Valent BioSciences. To reduce dependency on costly imports, he proposed establishing a joint-venture factory in Bangladesh. Valent BioSciences responded by inviting a delegation led by the mayor to visit its facilities in Chicago and Florida for feasibility assessment, with no expenses to be borne by the government or CCC.

The mayor alleged that a vested group provided false and misleading information to the prime minister, causing uncertainty over the planned visit. A government letter earlier confirmed that the summary for travel approval had been returned without authorization.

The U.S. Department of Defense has imposed new restrictions on journalists’ direct access to its press office, designating the area as a “sensitive classified information center.” Acting Press Secretary Joel Valdez said the move aims to ensure security, as officials regularly handle confidential materials. Under the new rules, journalists can only enter the offices of the Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs and the Press Secretary by prior appointment, and additional movement controls have been introduced across Pentagon press areas.

U.S. media outlets claim that since President Donald Trump’s return to the White House, access for journalists to government offices has been gradually reduced. In March, the Pentagon announced that no media outlet would be allowed to maintain a permanent office inside the building. Journalists are now also required to be escorted by security personnel within the complex, a policy already facing legal challenges.

The National Press Club and Freedom of the Press Foundation have both criticized the decision, warning that it undermines transparency and accountability. They questioned the justification for labeling the press office as a classified zone and expressed concern about declining public trust in defense communications.

Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury announced that the government plans to introduce a unified expatriate card, which will replace the existing BMET card. Speaking at a briefing at the ministry on Tuesday, he said the goal is to enable all necessary services through one card instead of multiple ones.

According to the ministry, the card will be available to all expatriates, including those living in Europe and Latin America. The minister explained that the card will function like a credit card, with applications processed through a dedicated cell for verification. Although the facilities are not yet finalized, the card is expected to include features for currency management, remittance benefits, and digital identity tracking.

The minister added that discussions are ongoing with the Land Ministry to allow expatriates to access land-related services using the card. Plans are also being considered to give cardholders priority in hospitals and other service areas. State Minister Nurul Haque, Secretary Mokhtar Hossain, and senior officials attended the briefing.

A clash between two factions of the Chhatra Dal in Brahmanpara upazila of Cumilla left an organizational secretary candidate hospitalized on Monday evening. According to a report by Axios, U.S. President Donald Trump called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu 'crazy' and said 'everyone hates him' during a phone conversation about Israel’s planned military escalation in Lebanon. The report states that Trump was angered by Netanyahu’s decision to expand operations in southern Lebanon and warned him against launching a major strike on Beirut, arguing it could harm Israel’s global standing and increase its isolation.

Citing U.S. officials, Axios reported that Trump expressed concern that the growing Lebanon conflict could undermine efforts to stabilize the Middle East and negatively affect ongoing diplomatic talks involving Iran. He also opposed a plan to destroy an entire building to target a Hezbollah commander, citing potential civilian casualties. Following the call, an Israeli official said Israel had backed away from a planned strike in Beirut.

Trump later described the discussion as productive, saying Israel had taken steps to control the situation. Netanyahu, however, characterized the exchange as a warning rather than restraint, reaffirming that Israel would continue its operations in southern Lebanon if Hezbollah attacks persisted.

Thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jews staged nationwide protests in Israel on June 2, blocking major roads and railways to oppose mandatory military conscription. According to an Associated Press report, the demonstrations paralyzed highways in Jerusalem and the Tel Aviv metropolitan area, halting public transport due to large crowds. Protesters carried placards condemning the government and rejecting Zionist military service.

The protests come as Israel faces a severe shortage of soldiers amid ongoing conflicts on multiple fronts. Historically, ultra-Orthodox groups secured exemptions from military service, allowing their followers to pursue religious studies instead. However, these exemptions are now under threat as the Israeli military considers extending the duration of compulsory service to address manpower shortages.

Currently, most Jewish men in Israel are required to serve about three years in the military, followed by reserve duties, while Jewish women serve two years. The potential policy changes have intensified tensions between the government and ultra-Orthodox communities.

A commentary published in the Bangladeshi newspaper Amar Desh on June 2, 2026, alleges that former Bangladeshi leader Sheikh Hasina, described as a fugitive convicted of serious crimes, is currently living secretly in New Delhi. The article claims India granted her refuge out of gratitude for her past alignment with Indian interests and to use her as a political tool against Bangladesh. It further asserts that recent interviews attributed to Hasina in Indian media reflect India’s stance rather than her own verified statements.

The piece argues that Hasina’s political relevance in Bangladesh has ended following recent elections, which it says were participatory and shifted support toward the opposition. It accuses Indian media and pro-Hasina groups of attempting to keep her politically visible as Bangladesh’s new government pursues independent foreign and defense policies that may not align with India’s preferences.

The article concludes that India’s efforts to influence Bangladeshi politics through Hasina and sympathetic voices could create challenges for the current government if not carefully managed.

The election for the presidency of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly is taking place today at the UN headquarters in New York. Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman is contesting against Cyprus’s Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andreas S. Kakouris. The vote is scheduled for 10 a.m. local time. The position is allocated to the Asia-Pacific Group under the UN’s regional rotation policy, and although geographically in Europe, Cyprus belongs to that group diplomatically.

Bangladesh has received formal support from several countries, including Brazil, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Turkey, Gambia, and Libya. The country is contesting for this post after nearly four decades, following its previous win in 1986. Officials said Bangladesh intensified diplomatic efforts in the final hours, though limited campaign time posed challenges compared to Cyprus’s year-long promotion.

Diplomats and observers are closely watching the vote, which will be conducted by secret ballot. If elected, Dr. Khalilur Rahman would become one of the most influential voices in the 193-member body, offering Bangladesh a platform to shape global discussions on peace, sustainable development, climate action, and governance.
