Setara Begum continues to mourn her son, bus driver Abu Zafar, who was shot dead during a protest in Golapbagh, Dhaka, on July 18, 2024. He was the family's sole earner. Zafar’s mother often dreams of his return and demands justice before her death. He was fatally shot by police, according to the family, while walking to his workplace. Locals took him to the hospital, where he was declared dead. Social services have promised support, but the family remains devastated.

ATM Azharul Islam, Central Executive Committee member of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, emphasized the importance of realizing the vision for which youth were martyred in the July-August uprising. Speaking in Pirganj after visiting the grave of Shaheed Abu Saeed, Azhar noted that he spent 14 years in prison on false charges of war crimes and credits his release to the sacrifices of the martyrs.

He stressed that meaningful change has yet to materialize and called for a united movement to restore democracy and voting rights. Highlighting the oppression during the Awami League era, he urged the public to prepare for ultimate sacrifices to fulfill the dream of a just Bangladesh.

Fulfilling the Martyrs’ Vision from the July-August Uprising Is Our National Duty: ATM Azharul Islam

Dhaka has emphasized the need to strengthen economic cooperation with Colombo, recognizing the friendly bilateral relationship between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. During a meeting with Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam, Sri Lankan High Commissioner Dharmapala Weerakkody discussed expanding trade, ICT, education, tourism, and pharmaceutical exports. They also explored how Sri Lanka can open its educational institutions to Bangladeshi students. Both sides agreed to pursue new areas of cooperation and welcomed the proposal to hold the next round of Foreign Office Consultations later this year.

From January to June 2025, Bangladesh witnessed 17,957 road accidents resulting in 2,778 deaths and 17,826 injuries, according to a report by the research group Save the Road. Additionally, 14 people died in 615 waterway accidents, and another 14 in 526 railway accidents during the same period.

The highest number of fatalities involved three-wheelers, buses, motorcycles, and trucks. The organization blamed police negligence and systemic mismanagement for the crisis and issued a seven-point demand. These include declaring a “Road Safety Day,” providing compensation to victims, banning unfit vehicles, eliminating corruption in the transport sector, and forming a dedicated transport police battalion.

In Muradnagar, Comilla, a violent mob attack resulting in the death of three family members was premeditated during multiple meetings the night before. The conflict originated over a stolen mobile phone involving a local schoolteacher and associates of a drug dealer, Roksana Begum Ruby. Long-standing feuds and accusations of drug trafficking fueled the violence. Police are investigating and searching for the masterminds. Survivors are receiving medical treatment, while locals live in fear amid a heavy police presence and mass fleeing.

The application process for recruiting over 100,000 teachers in MPO-listed private educational institutions across Bangladesh has resumed after a brief suspension. The Non-Government Teachers' Registration and Certification Authority (NTRCA) restarted the process at 2 PM on July 4, following a temporary halt on July 3 due to urgent technical maintenance. The recruitment is being conducted under the 6th public notice, aiming to fill 100,822 posts. Applications will be accepted until midnight on July 10, while the fee submission deadline is July 13.

A new job circular from the Joypurhat Civil Surgeon Office announces recruitment for 75 vacancies across eight positions, including statisticians, health assistants, and technicians. The circular was issued on July 1, 2025, and the online application process starts on July 7. Only permanent residents of Joypurhat district can apply. The positions require various educational qualifications ranging from SSC to bachelor’s degrees. The deadline for application is July 27, 2025.

Midland Bank Limited has issued a job circular seeking candidates for contract-based roles in its Retail and Corporate Division. The positions—Senior Business Development Officer and Business Development Officer—require a minimum of one year’s experience and a bachelor’s degree. Both men and women up to 35 years of age can apply. The number of posts is not fixed. The workplace will be office-based, and the job location is anywhere in Bangladesh. Applications must be submitted online by July 20, 2025.

A BNP leader in Daudkandi, Cumilla, allegedly attacked Krishak Dal convener Ahmed Hossain Talukder after not receiving a desired post in the local union committee. The incident occurred Thursday night following the announcement of the new Goalmari Union BNP committee. The accused, Mizanur Rahman Pradhan, now faces a show-cause notice from the party. Central BNP leaders condemned the attack, demanding the perpetrators be brought to justice. Talukder is receiving treatment, while Pradhan has yet to respond to the allegations.

Masud Saeedi stated that just as the demand for a caretaker government by Jamaat-e-Islami in 1984 was initially misunderstood but later accepted as justified, the demand for elections under a Proportional Representation (PR) system will also gain support over time.

He emphasized that the PR system safeguards voting rights, reduces corruption and nomination trade, and ensures meaningful representation. Saeedi called for the implementation of this system to realize the dream of an equitable Bangladesh—one that requires justice for past genocides and systemic reforms. He warned that holding elections without foundational reforms could lead to the resurgence of fascism, which the public will reject.
