The joint committee formed to enhance the development of Bangladesh's capital market held its first meeting at the Bangladesh Bank headquarters. Chaired by Dr. Md. Ejazul Islam, Executive Director of Bangladesh Bank, the meeting included officials from the central bank, Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC), and the Ministry of Finance. Discussions focused on identifying key strategies to strengthen market infrastructure, improve regulatory coordination, and ensure sustainable growth of the capital market in line with national economic objectives.

Ahead of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) and hall union elections, the university administration has formed a 22-member advisory committee to oversee the process. Approved by Vice-Chancellor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, the committee is headed by Dr. Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, with Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed serving as member-secretary.

At the committee’s first meeting on July 1, key strategies for election preparation, campus security, and inclusive participation were discussed. Chief Returning Officer Dr. Jashim Uddin and Returning Officer Dr. Golam Rabbani presented the detailed election framework and guidelines.

DU Forms 22-Member Advisory Committee for DCSU and Hall Union Elections

Although test production has started at the Sirajganj wind power plant, it has not yet begun commercial operation. The plant, launched in 2018 with eight turbines, aims to generate 2 MW of electricity for the national grid. Delays in implementation kept it inactive for over five years. Officials say full-scale production will begin soon. The project is expected to help mitigate climate change, reduce fossil fuel dependency, and promote clean energy, with local engineers capable of maintaining the system for up to 25 years.

Raipur Upazila Health Complex in Laxmipur has 98 vacant positions, including specialist doctors and nurses, severely affecting patient care. The hospital's operation theater has remained closed for three years due to staff and generator shortages, despite having modern equipment. Patients are forced to seek costly private services, impacting around 400,000 residents. While reports of the crisis are sent monthly to higher authorities, no improvements have been made. Only 18 doctors serve against 31 sanctioned posts, with no specialists currently appointed.

Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has called on the United Nations to establish effective mechanisms to combat misinformation and uphold ethical standards in media and digital platforms. In a meeting with a UNESCO delegation, Dr. Yunus stressed that fake news—often originating from foreign sources with local cooperation—can severely mislead the public.

He urged the UN to engage with media organizations and consider developing independent regulatory frameworks. The UNESCO team shared that their upcoming report will include recommendations on journalist safety, gender security in newsrooms, and training in line with international standards.

Chief Advisor Yunus Urges UN to Counter Disinformation in Media

The interim government has officially declared August 5 as ‘July Uprising Day’ and announced a public holiday to mark the occasion. Earlier, July 16 was designated as ‘July Martyrs’ Day’, and August 8 was announced as ‘New Bangladesh Day’. However, due to widespread public criticism, the decision to observe August 8 has since been withdrawn.

Separate circulars were issued by the Cabinet Division outlining the significance and observance of each day.

August 5 Declared as ‘July Uprising Day’ – Public Holiday Announced

The government has dismissed former Assistant Commissioner of Lalmonirhat, Taposi Tabassum Urmi, over a controversial Facebook post questioning the legitimacy of the interim government and Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus. A departmental investigation found her guilty of misconduct, leading to her dismissal with presidential approval.

In the post, Urmi challenged the constitutional validity of the interim administration and criticized Dr. Yunus’s leadership, as well as expressing views against martyr Shahid Abu Sayeed and the mass uprising. Authorities deemed her comments as a breach of discipline within the civil service.

Ex-Assistant Commissioner Dismissed Over Controversial Facebook Post

The Trump administration has initiated steps to revoke citizenship of immigrants granted naturalization in the US, prioritizing those convicted of war crimes, human rights abuses, or national security threats. A June 2025 directive gives Secretary of State Marco Rubio sole authority to cancel citizenship on security grounds. Additionally, birthright citizenship under the 14th Amendment is being restricted, affecting children of undocumented or temporary visa holders. This has caused fear among immigrant communities, including Bangladeshi expatriates, who are urged to stay vigilant and seek legal advice.

Leaders and activists of the banned student organization, Chhatra League, staged a surprise protest rally in Manikganj early Wednesday morning.

The flash demonstration took place around 7:30 AM on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway. The rally was reportedly led by Rajidul Islam, General Secretary of the district unit and a suspect in multiple criminal cases. According to local reports, this marks the third such protest under Rajidul's leadership in recent months.

Ramzan Mahmud, Senior Joint Convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, condemned the event, calling it a "brazen act by a fascist political group." The Superintendent of Police confirmed that Rajidul is facing several charges and that efforts are ongoing to apprehend him. Authorities believe the rally moved toward the Barobaria area.

Banned Student Group Stages Flash Protest in Manikganj

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) interrogated three Election Commission officials over allegations of misusing over 30 billion taka in purchasing electronic voting machines (EVMs) during the Awami League government. The officials, including a deputy secretary and system analyst, were questioned for buying EVMs at ten times the market price without a tender process. The ACC found preliminary evidence of abuse of power and financial rule violations, leading to an estimated government loss of approximately 317.2 billion taka.

In June, Bangladesh witnessed 689 road accidents resulting in 696 deaths and 1,867 injuries, marking a 22.55% rise in fatalities compared to May. Most casualties involved motorcycles, buses, and trucks. Dhaka division recorded the highest incidents and deaths, while Sylhet had the lowest. Key causes include reckless driving, faulty vehicles, poor road conditions, and weak traffic enforcement. The Road Safety Foundation recommends improved driver training, stricter law enforcement, better infrastructure, and enhanced public transport regulation to curb the rising toll.

A delegation from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has held a meeting with Charles Whiteley, Head of the South Asia Division at the European External Action Service (EEAS) and former EU Ambassador to Bangladesh.

The meeting took place in Brussels, with senior BNP leaders including Standing Committee member Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan joining virtually. The discussion focused on key issues such as human rights in Bangladesh, freedom of expression, the ongoing political crisis, and the prospects for national elections.

During the meeting, Charles Whiteley reiterated the EU's support for the people of Bangladesh and expressed hope that the country would soon return to a democratic path.

BNP Delegation Holds Talks with EU’s Charles Whiteley in Brussels

Air Vice Marshal Md. Mustafa Mahmud Siddique has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), replacing Air Vice Marshal Md. Manzur Kabir Bhuiyan. The appointment was confirmed through a notification signed by the Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration on July 2. The previous chairman’s withdrawal was announced earlier on June 26, though no reason was provided for his removal. Mustafa Mahmud will now oversee civil aviation operations under the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism.

The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has announced a reduction in the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for July. The price of a 12-kg LPG cylinder has been cut by BDT 39, bringing the new retail price to BDT 1,364, down from BDT 1,403.

In addition, the price of autogas has been reduced by BDT 1.84 per liter, now set at BDT 62.46. BERC Chairman Jalal Ahmed announced the updated pricing at a press briefing on Wednesday. The new rates came into effect that same evening.

Prices for other LPG cylinder sizes have also been adjusted. The new prices are as follows:

5.5 kg cylinder: BDT 625

30 kg cylinder: BDT 3,409

45 kg cylinder: BDT 5,114

LPG Cylinder Prices Reduced by BDT 39 for July

Four individuals, including former advisers and ministers Salman F. Rahman, Anisul Haq, and Dipu Moni, have been ordered arrested in connection with attempted murder and murder cases linked to the July-August protests in Dhaka. Salman and others face charges from Mohammadpur police over an attempted murder during a protest last August. Meanwhile, Ziaul Alam, a former senior secretary, was arrested in a separate murder case from Kafrul police. The incidents involved protest-related shootings resulting in injuries and one death.
