This is the first time in Bangladesh's legal history that the Supreme Court has acquitted an individual previously sentenced to death in a war crimes tribunal.

In response to the acquittal of Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam, Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman stated that the execution of 11 party leaders was carried out through fabricated verdicts. “Justice itself was brutally murdered,” he said, blaming an authoritarian government for deliberately eliminating the Jamaat leadership. He added that had these leaders been alive today, they could have guided the nation through its current crisis with wisdom. Dr. Rahman expressed hope that, with the support of the people and by the grace of Almighty Allah, the politics of revenge and discrimination would one day come to an end.

In a courtroom confession, Ripon, a suspect in the murder of Shahriar Alam Samya, revealed that two separate drug trafficking groups were involved in the killing. He said after the murder, he transported the prime suspect by motorcycle to the Suhrawardy Udyan temple gate, from where another group helped him escape to safety. The perpetrators later fled to Cox’s Bazar. Ripon admitted that 5 to 7 people were directly involved, with two delivering fatal blows while others stood guard. All suspects are reportedly involved in narcotics trade. Five suspects were produced in court on Monday, where Ripon gave his statement.

The Local Government Division has confirmed it was preparing to administer the oath to BNP’s Ishraq Hossain as Mayor of Dhaka South after the High Court rejected a petition blocking his appointment. However, Ishraq filed a new petition on May 25, and a citizen filed a leave-to-appeal against the previous ruling on May 26. As the matter is now pending in the Appellate Division, the government has decided to wait for the court's final decision before proceeding with the swearing-in.

Security has been intensified at the Bangladesh Secretariat as government employees protest the 'Public Service (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025'. SWAT and BGB forces have been deployed at the main entrance. Entry is restricted to only government officials and staff. According to police, a decision on media access will be made by noon. The Home Ministry earlier announced that no visitors would be allowed into the Secretariat today.

Tensions escalated along the Roumari border in Kurigram early Tuesday following an alleged 'push-in' of 14 individuals by Indian Border Security Force (BSF). Locals reported hearing gunshots as Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) intervened. BGB has taken a strict stance with the help of local residents to block the push-in attempts. The BSF allegedly forced 14 people—men and women—across the Boraibari border illegally. Despite BGB’s call for a flag meeting, BSF has not responded. The pushed-in individuals are reportedly still stranded in no-man’s land.

The Appellate Division has overturned the death sentence handed to Jamaat-e-Islami leader ATM Azharul Islam in a war crimes case. The verdict was delivered on Tuesday by a seven-member bench led by Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed. Defense counsel Shishir Monir stated, “First, we thank Allah. He has been completely acquitted of all charges. This was injustice in the name of justice.” Following the ruling, there are now no legal barriers to Azharul Islam's release.

BNP Central Leader Aminul Haque has strongly condemned the daylight murder of Kamrul Ahsan Sadhan, Joint Convenor of Gulshan Thana BNP. “Such acts of violence are unacceptable in a Bangladesh striving to rid itself of authoritarianism post-August 5,” he said. Haque demanded that those responsible be brought to justice, stating that law enforcement has already been approached and is actively investigating the suspects and motives behind the killing.

Nine months after suffering severe eye injuries during the July uprising, many protestors still haven’t regained their vision. Despite being treated at major hospitals, including the National Institute of Ophthalmology, full recovery has remained elusive. In a desperate act of frustration and despair, four injured protesters—Ali Hamza Shimul (19), Md. Sagar (18), Akhtar Hossain aka Abu Taher (22), and Maruf Ahmed (21)—attempted suicide by drinking poison on Sunday while still undergoing treatment. It has also been revealed that three others had similar intentions but refrained after the incident came to light.

In a recent directive, the Finance Division of the Ministry of Finance has increased the festival allowance for MPO-listed teachers at non-government educational institutions. Teachers will now receive 50% of their basic salary as a festival bonus, up from the previous 25%. The circular also noted that any future irregularities in disbursement will be the responsibility of the respective bill-paying authorities. The allowance will take effect from the date of the administrative ministry’s order.

Demanding justice for the killing of student Samya, Dhaka University’s Chhatra Dal organized a sit-in on Monday afternoon in front of the administrative building. They called for the arrest and trial of those responsible, as well as the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor and Proctor for failing to ensure campus safety. Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahas, President of DU Chhatra Dal, said, “This is our final program of tolerance. We have shown patience for 13 days, but the VC and Proctor are unfit to remain in their positions. Our next move will be even more intense.”
