Jamaat-e-Islami’s student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, accused opponents of freedom of expression of forcibly removing artwork from an exhibition at Dhaka University's TSC that depicted political injustice and criticized the Awami League's governance.
Shibir President Zahidul Islam said the exhibition was meant to highlight "judicial killings" and other alleged abuses under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s rule.
He also criticized the July Declaration for lacking representation from public universities, private institutions, journalists, and diaspora activists. “We remained patient to avoid chaos,” he added, calling on the government to reconsider the document.

The Jahangirnagar University (JU) unit of the Student Union has drawn criticism for allegedly ignoring the university’s July Uprising Memorial, “Udommo 24,” while paying tribute to martyrs at the central Shaheed Minar.
Abdur Rashid Jitu, convener of the anti-dictatorship movement at JU, stated that the official recognition of “Udommo 24” makes it the most appropriate place for homage. He accused certain groups of intentionally creating confusion.
However, Student Union president Adri Ankur argued that the central monument represents broader national struggles and that their tribute was not disrespectful or conflicting.
Controversy at Jahangirnagar University Over July Martyrs' Memorial
Sumaiya Tahmid Jafrin, wife of Major Sadikul Haque, has been placed on five-day remand for allegedly plotting to overthrow the government under the guise of celebrating Sheikh Hasina’s return.
According to police, she was involved in coordinating secret meetings, recruiting homeless individuals for disruptive activities, and managing a Facebook group named “ODIB-M-1701 (Operation Dhaka Blockade)”.
Investigators claim several meetings were held at convention centers, resorts, and residential flats to strategize unrest. Though her lawyers deny the allegations and sought bail, the court approved her remand for further interrogation.

Dhaka court has imposed a travel ban on former Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed, nine election commissioners, and two former election secretaries over a treason case filed by BNP. The accused are currently absconding. The ban aims to prevent them from leaving the country during the ongoing investigation. The case alleges election manipulation and intimidation during the Awami League government. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and several senior officials are also named in the case.
Asaduzzaman Tuhin (38), a journalist with Dainik Protidiner Kagoj, was hacked and killed in broad daylight Thursday night in the Chandana Chowrasta area of Gazipur.
He had posted a video on Facebook moments before the attack, criticizing pedestrian behavior in the city. Soon after, masked assailants attacked him with sharp weapons at a tea stall and slit his throat before fleeing.
Eyewitnesses say the attack followed Tuhin filming a group allegedly brandishing weapons. His body has been sent to the morgue, and police have opened an investigation.
Journalist Brutally Murdered in Gazipur
Jabed Rahman Joy (19), a member of the BNP-affiliated student wing, was fatally stabbed Wednesday night in Panchagarh town allegedly by rival members from his own organization.
According to police, multiple clashes occurred throughout the day between two rival groups. Joy was attacked near the Cinema Hall Market by 10–12 individuals led by Al Amin, who allegedly stabbed him in the abdomen.
Protests erupted following the murder, forcing all shops in the area to close. The student group has refused to bury Joy until the perpetrators are arrested. Police and military have launched a manhunt to apprehend those responsible.

Private institution teachers from all 64 districts will gather in Dhaka on August 13, demanding the nationalization of MPO-listed schools. Organized by the Alliance of MPO-Enlisted Teachers, the mass rally aims to press the government to fulfill long-standing promises, including allowances and fair benefits. If the demands are not met by the rally date, the teachers warn of class boycotts and tougher protests. Over 300 volunteers and divisional coordinators will manage logistics, with buses arranged from each district to ensure a large turnout.

Five leaders of the National Coordination Platform (NCP) have submitted responses to show-cause notices issued after they traveled to Cox’s Bazar on the day of the July Declaration event. Joint Member Secretary Saleh Uddin Sifat confirmed the development on Thursday, adding that final decisions will be made by Convener Nahid Islam and Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain.

Bangladesh Road Transport Owners' Association and Workers’ Welfare Federation have declared a 72-hour nationwide transport strike starting August 12 if their 8-point demand is not met by August 11. Key demands include extending the economic lifespan of commercial vehicles to 30 years, simplifying vehicle registration, reforming traffic laws, and ending police harassment. The strike will affect all passenger and freight services, including buses, trucks, and covered vans. The announcement was made during a meeting in Sylhet involving regional transport leaders.
The court ordered former Begum Rokeya University Vice-Chancellor Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah to be sent to jail in an embezzlement case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission. Kalimullah claimed Education Minister Dipu Moni made wrongful demands and launched political attacks against him. The court rejected bail requests and highlighted ongoing investigations. Kalimullah was arrested from Dhaka and faces charges related to misappropriation of development funds and procedural irregularities during his tenure.
As part of strengthening bilateral cooperation, the Bangladesh Army has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Turkish Airlines.
The agreement, signed on Thursday at Dhaka Cantonment, will allow both active-duty and retired military personnel to travel internationally at reduced rates for both official and personal purposes. According to ISPR, this initiative will lower travel expenses for army members and save government funds. Personnel will also gain affordable access to Star Alliance services offered by Turkish Airlines.
