According to a press statement, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has detained an Indian national named Sheikh Ejaz (36) for illegally entering the country through the Satkhira border. He was arrested on Saturday afternoon from the Baldghata area of Baikari Union in Satkhira Sadar Upazila. Sheikh Ejaz had married Maya Begum (35), a Bangladeshi woman from Khulna’s Maheshwarpasha, while she was in India. The couple later moved to Bangladesh and had been living in Daulatpur, Khulna, for the past four years, with Ejaz earning a living as an e-rickshaw driver. He was apprehended while attempting to return to India.
Rangpur Awami League leader Lipi Khan Bhorosa has been arrested by the police in connection with an attempted murder case related to the recent mass uprising. She had openly participated in Tipu Munshi’s election rally and is also the chairperson of SL Bhorosa Group. Reports indicate that on July 19, protestors gathered in front of City Market when police and Awami League activists opened fire on them, injuring several people. On November 13 last year, a case was filed at Kotwali Police Station regarding the shooting of Mamunur Rashid Mamun. Lipi Khan is listed as the 179th accused in this case.
During the protests in January demanding the transformation of Titumir College into a university, students from the Titumir Unity platform put up banners declaring it a university. However, they have now rejected the proposed plan to form a new university combining seven colleges. Titumir Unity remains firm in its demand for an independent university status for Titumir College. They revealed that four students were invited to a UGC meeting, but three representatives boycotted it. The only attendee also rejected the proposed ‘Dhaka Central University’ formation and walked out of the meeting.
Tarique Rahman has taken responsibility for the family of Montu Chandra Das, who was murdered after filing a case against his daughter’s rapists. On Sunday evening, Rahman spoke with Montu’s wife over the phone, assuring her of support. Earlier, he arranged for food supplies, clothing, and other necessities to be delivered to the grieving family. Montu’s daughter, a seventh-grader, was raped on March 5. After filing the case, Montu was brutally killed on the night of March 11.
At least 27 people were killed and 30 injured in an airstrike by Myanmar’s military junta in Mandalay province on Friday night. The attack occurred at 3:00 AM in the Let Pan Hlya village of Singu township, around 65 kilometers from Mandalay. A spokesperson from the Mandalay People’s Defense Force, which is fighting the junta, confirmed the deaths. The airstrike is part of the ongoing armed rebellion that began following the military coup in 2021, which led to the ousting of the civilian government led by Aung San Suu Kyi.
A fire broke out late Saturday night at a fresh market in Rajshahi, destroying 12 shops. Upon receiving the distress call, seven fire service units arrived at the scene around 12:45 AM and worked tirelessly for an hour to bring the flames under control by 1:50 AM. During the operation, firefighter Delwar Hossain fell ill due to excessive smoke and was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. Fortunately, no other casualties were reported.
Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has announced that the government aims to elevate China-Bangladesh relations through Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus’s upcoming visit to China. Prior to the visit, Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen met with Chief Adviser Yunus. The Chief Adviser will travel to China on March 26, where he will meet President Xi Jinping on March 28, along with CEOs of major Chinese companies. According to the press secretary, China has promised to build a general hospital in Bangladesh, but the Chief Adviser hopes that Chinese health service providers will invest in Bangladesh and establish hospitals jointly with the country.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed two separate cases against Hasanul Haque Inu and his wife Afroza Haque for acquiring illegal wealth. Inu allegedly accumulated assets worth 48,425,507 BDT through criminal misconduct and abuse of power, inconsistent with his known sources of income. Suspicious transactions amounting to 118,816,019 BDT were identified in his four bank accounts. Additionally, it is alleged that his wife has become wealthy through these illicit earnings.
European Union (EU) Ambassador Michael Miller delivered three key messages to the Election Commission (EC) for ensuring a fair election. At a press conference on Sunday, Miller emphasized: First, the EU is a key partner for Bangladesh and stands by the country during this crucial time of transition. Second, the EU aims to strengthen its partnership in every aspect and is here to support the interim government in conducting elections according to the people’s expectations. Third, the EU has assured the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) that they will assist in conducting elections in accordance with international standards, offering expertise and financial packages. The Press Wing of the Chief Adviser has clarified that reports claiming there will be no Independence Day parade on March 26 are misleading. The parade is not being canceled, but due to ongoing renovations at Dhaka’s National Stadium, it will not take place in the capital for another year. However, the interim government has decided to organize the parade with due honor in all 63 other districts across the country, along with special receptions for war veterans. All district administrators have been instructed to take necessary measures for the event.
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Director General Md. Akhtar Hossain has confirmed an investigation into Awami League leader Sheikh Selim over allegations of corruption and financial irregularities. Reports suggest that Selim manipulated tenders worth Tk 1,300 crore across various government projects, allegedly taking commissions of 10-15% from favored contractors. The ACC has initiated a probe into these claims. Sheikh Selim is reportedly in hiding. Earlier, on August 20, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) ordered a review of 91 bank and financial accounts linked to Selim and his family.
The High Court has upheld the death sentences of 20 individuals for the brutal 2019 murder of Buet student Abrar Fahad. In response, Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary Mia Golam Parwar stated that swift execution of the verdict would ensure justice. He recalled how Abrar was taken to a student leader’s room in Buet’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall, where he was subjected to brutal torture and killed on October 6, 2019. Jamaat believes that implementing the verdict without delay will provide justice to the victim’s family and set a milestone in the legal system.
A court has ordered the freezing of 123 bank accounts belonging to former tax commissioner Ranjit Kumar Talukder and his wife, Jhumur Mazumder. According to the case details, Jhumur Mazumder holds Tk 11.5 crore across multiple accounts. The ACC is investigating Ranjit over allegations of accumulating vast amounts of illegal wealth through bribery and corruption. Authorities suspect an attempt to launder these funds, prompting the account freeze.
A court has imposed a travel ban on Awami League leader Mahbubul Alam Hanif, his wife Fauzia Alam, and their three children—Fahim Afsar Alam, Farhan Sadik Alam, and Tanisha Alam. The ban follows allegations of massive financial irregularities and corruption against Hanif. The court order states that his wife and sons were also involved in laundering these illicit funds.
