Seven months after the fall of the government, Kishoreganj’s Shaheed Syed Nazrul Medical Hospital is still issuing tickets bearing the Mujib Year logo. This has sparked outrage among students and activists involved in the July Revolution. They argue that despite the autocratic regime’s downfall, its loyalists remain embedded in various institutions. On Tuesday, the logo was spotted on emergency department tickets. Hospital authorities claim they are using leftover printed tickets and have not yet received approval to issue new ones.

The Trump administration has directly engaged in negotiations with Hamas, bypassing Israel, to secure the release of American hostages held in Gaza and to establish a broader ceasefire agreement. On Wednesday, Trump’s Special Envoy for Hostage Affairs, Adam Boehler, held talks in Doha. Sources told Axios that while discussions are ongoing, no formal agreement has been reached yet. Additionally, Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, had planned a visit to Qatar on Tuesday but canceled it due to a lack of progress in Israel’s ceasefire deal.
On August 5, Sheikh Hasina fled to India, initially assumed to be a brief six-to-seven-hour visit. However, she remains there as a guest while Bangladesh’s government continues to press for her extradition. Analysts argue that turning away a guest contradicts Indian traditions. Under extradition treaties, political cases can be exempted from repatriation. While Hasina has not been given a state platform in India, she has been allowed to speak online. However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval reportedly meet her only when necessary, with limited access to others. As a UN official, her close aide, Putul, is also restricted from staying with her.
Following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government, Jasim Uddin was appointed as the 27th Foreign Secretary. However, since assuming office, no international narrative has been shaped regarding the July Revolution, nor have any necessary reforms been undertaken—an omission for which he is being held responsible. Reports suggest that he labeled several pro-Awami League officials as “deprived officers” in his recommendations. During the previous administration, Jasim Uddin received a Public Administration Award under a fascist regime. Despite nationwide protests, he remained loyal to the Hasina government, even posting in favor of the Awami League on Facebook. However, he failed to exert any pressure on India to stop Hasina’s anti-Bangladesh activities from Delhi or to ensure her return.

He blamed past governments’ weak foreign policies for such incidents and called on the current administration to adopt a stronger stance. Additionally, he urged the government to ensure fair distribution of iftar and essential food items at reasonable prices during Ramadan.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced retaliatory tariffs on India and other countries that impose what he calls unfair trade duties. The new tariffs will take effect from April 2. Citing India as an example, Trump criticized the country for imposing over 100% tariffs on U.S. automobiles. He stressed that the U.S. must counter unjust trade policies, assuring that, despite potential price increases, the move would not significantly harm the American economy. The retaliatory tariffs could impact China, India, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, and the European Union.

The U.S. representatives emphasized that the Bangladesh government must ensure proper justice so that such crimes do not recur in the future. The ban on sending Bangladeshi workers to Lebanon has been lifted following an improvement in the country’s security situation, the Bangladesh Embassy in Lebanon has announced. However, specific conditions apply: every recruitment demand must be verified by the Bangladesh Embassy in Beirut, and workers can only be sent to areas with suitable working conditions, excluding Lebanon’s southern regions bordering Israel. The ban was initially imposed after the embassy advised workers against traveling to Lebanon on August 8 last year. Amid the conflict, 1,246 Bangladeshis were repatriated from Lebanon on 19 flights between October 21 last year and early this year.
