The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has detained two Indian nationals in Barkal, Rangamati, for illegally entering Bangladesh. The arrests took place on Wednesday at Chhoto Harina Bazaar. The detainees, identified as Gyanranjan Chakma (45) and Pinku Chakma (22), were found loitering suspiciously in Barkal Upazila. Upon interrogation, they admitted to being Indian citizens engaged in cross-border trade, attempting to smuggle goods between the two countries.
BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has criticized the Chief Adviser’s remarks on the upcoming national election, calling them vague and lacking clear directives. “Words must align with actions,” he said, questioning how an election initially planned for December could be pushed to March or June. Rizvi accused the ruling Awami League of repeatedly undermining democracy since independence, stating, “They have always deceived the people with lies and political gimmicks. China and Bangladesh are set to strengthen their ties further following a meeting between Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus and Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang on the sidelines of the Boao Forum. The Chief Adviser’s office reported that President Xi Jinping places great importance on Yunus’s visit and expects Bangladesh to achieve prosperity under his leadership. Reaffirming Bangladesh’s commitment to the “One China” policy, Yunus highlighted that “Dhaka takes pride in being the first South Asian country to join China’s Belt and Road Initiative.” Bangladesh has requested China to lower its loan interest rate from 3% to 1-2% and to waive commitment fees for Bangladeshi projects. In response, Ding Xuexiang announced that China would extend duty-free and quota-free access for Bangladeshi goods until 2028, two years beyond Bangladesh’s expected graduation to a middle-income country.

Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus met with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk in China to discuss bilateral issues, including Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant operations, wheat and fertilizer imports from Russia, and Gazprom’s gas exploration in Bangladesh. Yunus confirmed that financial issues concerning the Rooppur project have been resolved, with payments being made through a designated account in Dhaka. Overchuk expressed Russia’s interest in increasing Bangladesh’s wheat and fertilizer imports and offering more scholarships to Bangladeshi students.
A court has declared BNP candidate Ishraq Hossain as the winner of the 2020 Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) election, nullifying the government’s gazette that recognized Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh as mayor. The court cited electoral irregularities and corruption as reasons for annulling the previous results. Ishraq Hossain had filed a case challenging the election outcome on March 3, 2020.

A Dhaka court has issued an arrest warrant against Md. Ashrafuzzaman, accused of fraudulently using BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman’s name. The case was filed by Advocate Iltutmish Saudagar Annie, who alleged that the suspect has been deceiving people since the 1/11 political crisis, even defrauding an Awami League minister. The prosecution has received a draft investigation report on the August 5 Chankharpul shooting incident, where five individuals were killed. Chief Prosecutor Tazul Islam stated that the final report will be submitted to the tribunal after Eid. Businessman Golam Kibria Shamim, also known as GK Shamim, has been sentenced to five years and six months in prison for amassing wealth beyond known sources of income. Police have arrested six members of a notorious gang who posed as RAB officers to carry out a daring robbery in Dhanmondi. The suspects are: Farhad Bin Mosharraf (33), Yasin Hasan (22), Mobashwer Ahmed (23), Wakil Mahmud (26), Abdullah (32), and Suman (29). On March 26, a group of 20-25 individuals, some dressed as RAB officers, magistrates, and students, entered a residence claiming to be on official duty. The gang then looted valuables. However, the homeowners quickly called emergency services (999), prompting law enforcement to respond immediately.
