Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has relieved Professor Dr. Mahmudul Hasan of his duties as the Amir’s foreign affairs adviser for violating party directives. He has been replaced by Barrister Mir Ahmad Bin Kasem Arman, a Member of Parliament from Dhaka-14. The decision was announced on Tuesday through a statement by Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar. According to the statement, Mahmudul Hasan sent a letter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that included matters not authorized by the party leadership. The letter, signed by Jamaat Amir Shafiqur Rahman and sent on February 22, had proposed appointing the opposition leader’s foreign affairs adviser as an adviser to the foreign minister to enhance cooperation and balance in international relations. The party viewed this as a deviation from its approved instructions. The statement emphasized Jamaat’s commitment to responsible, transparent, and accountable political conduct, noting that corrective measures had already been taken to prevent further misunderstanding within or outside the party.

The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) has reported that around 80,000 people have crossed from Lebanon into Syria since Israeli attacks began. UNHCR spokesperson Celine Schmitt told Syria’s state news agency SANA that many families left Lebanon in haste, often without being able to take personal belongings. Most of those displaced are currently staying with relatives in Syria. According to Schmitt, no formal requests for emergency shelter have been registered so far. The report highlights the rapid movement of civilians amid escalating violence and the humanitarian challenges faced by those seeking safety across the border. The situation underscores growing regional instability and the potential for further displacement if hostilities continue, though UNHCR has not yet indicated any new assistance measures.

Fuel traders in Sylhet have withdrawn their strike that was called following an attack and stabbing of a petrol pump employee in the city. The decision was announced at a press conference on Tuesday at the divisional office of the Bangladesh Petroleum Dealers, Distributors, Agents and Petrol Pump Owners Association. Leaders said the strike was lifted after authorities assured them of swift justice for the attackers and improved security for pump workers and establishments. The association leaders criticized the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation’s (BPC) new marketing policy, which they said reduces fuel supply by 25 percent compared to the average volume lifted between March and June of the previous year. They argued that despite adequate octane and petrol production from Sylhet’s gas field condensate, the policy has disrupted normal supply to pumps, causing public anger and occasional clashes. The traders warned that unless the policy is revised, they would keep pumps open but suspend fuel lifting from depots, potentially hampering marketing operations.

Supporters of the Trump administration are increasingly urging it to end the ongoing war with Iran, according to an Al Jazeera report from Washington. The report notes that the U.S. government has yet to present a convincing justification for the conflict to the American public. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth cited Iran’s role in supplying advanced explosive devices during the Iraq war as a reason for the current campaign, but this explanation has not resonated widely. The report highlights that unlike previous U.S. military operations in seven other countries, this war is directly affecting ordinary Americans. Rising fuel prices are straining household budgets, and disruptions in fertilizer supplies from the Middle East could create serious problems for U.S. agriculture during the upcoming planting season. Public sentiment in the United States appears to be turning against the military campaign, with growing indications that citizens do not support the ongoing operation.

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said that several countries, including China and Russia, have contacted Tehran to discuss a possible ceasefire. In an interview with Iran’s state news agency ISNA, he stated that Iran also supports a ceasefire but insists that any agreement must include a guarantee that the United States will permanently halt its attacks. The statement follows a joint US-Israel strike on Iran on February 28, which reportedly killed more than 1,200 people, including Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Since the attack, regional tensions have sharply escalated, with Iran launching drone and missile strikes against Israeli, Jordanian, Iraqi, and US military bases in Gulf countries. The ongoing exchanges have heightened instability across the Middle East, and Tehran’s condition for a ceasefire suggests that diplomatic efforts remain uncertain amid continuing hostilities.

Commerce, Industry and Textiles Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir announced that the government is giving special importance to ensuring irrigation facilities to increase agricultural production. He made the statement on Tuesday afternoon while laying the foundation stone for the 'Bangshikhal excavation from Jangail Surma River to Bolaura Jilkar Haor' project in Sylhet Sadar upazila. The minister added that the government is committed to fulfilling its electoral pledges and has already initiated several development programs within 21 days of assuming office, including the distribution of family cards in various parts of the country.
