A Dhaka court has ordered the arrest of Awami League leader and former reserved seat MP Sabina Akter Tuhin in an attempted murder case filed with Mirpur Model Police Station. The same court also directed the arrest of Rokeya Jamal, president of the Mohila League’s Kafrul unit, in a separate murder case. Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam issued the orders on Monday after hearing two separate petitions.

According to the case against Tuhin, during an anti-discrimination student movement on August 4, a victim named Milon Panna was shot in the arm and hip near Mirpur 14 Ideal School and College. The case was filed naming former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 400–500 unidentified individuals. In the case against Rokeya Jamal, a man named Md. Shakil was shot during the same movement in Mirpur 10 and later died while under treatment. His father filed the case naming the main accused and 300 unidentified persons.

The court’s decision followed hearings from both prosecution and defense lawyers, with the defense opposing the arrests and seeking bail.

A complaint has been raised that a case involving Rangpur Metropolitan Police sergeant and former Nilphamari district Chhatra League leader Badrul Alam Ripon was diverted to a different course. According to local residents, the incident began on May 29 after Friday prayers in Chapra Sormojani village of Nilphamari Sadar upazila, when a dispute over the mosque imam and muezzin’s salary escalated into a quarrel. During the altercation, Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury reportedly fell and died while attempting to strike his nephew Siraj Uddoula Chowdhury with a stick. Police later detained another cousin, Saiful Chowdhury, from his home and sent the body for autopsy.

Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Zillur Rahman said action would be taken based on the autopsy report. Sub-Inspector Sajal Basak stated that the accused had been produced in open court and placed on remand, adding that he did not know the victim’s nephew. Badrul Alam Ripon denied influencing the case, saying the trial would depend on the post-mortem findings.

A Dhaka court has sentenced Abhijit Adhikari Tirtha, a former managing director of Sukhada Properties Limited and associate of financial scam suspect Prashanta Kumar Halder (PK Halder), to seven years in prison in a corruption case. The verdict was delivered on Monday, June 22, 2026, by Judge Md Hasanuzzaman of Dhaka’s Special Judge Court-1. The court imposed two years of imprisonment for concealing wealth information and five years for acquiring assets beyond known income sources. He was also fined Tk 13,505,284, with an additional 30 days of imprisonment in default, and his illegally acquired assets were ordered confiscated by the state.

According to the court, both sentences will run concurrently, meaning Tirtha will serve a maximum of five years under the law. The court official stated that the accused has been absconding since the beginning of the case, and arrest and conviction warrants have been issued against him.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case on March 6, 2023, alleging that Tirtha possessed assets worth Tk 12.25 million inconsistent with his known income. The investigation report was submitted on May 5, 2024, and the trial began on March 13, 2025, with five witnesses testifying during proceedings.

A 24-year-old woman named Nazma Khatun died after falling into an uncovered manhole beside the Dhaka–Mymensingh Highway in Gazipur on Sunday afternoon. The incident occurred near the southern side of the Bhogra Bypass area during heavy rainfall that flooded the road. Police said the woman went missing after falling into the manhole, and firefighters later recovered her body. It was sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital morgue.

The report notes that a similar incident took place on July 27, 2025, when another woman, Faria Tasnim Jyoti, went missing after falling into an uncovered manhole in Tongi’s Hossain Market area. Her body was recovered 36 hours later from the Shalikchura Beel area by a fire service diving team.

The recurrence of such accidents highlights ongoing safety concerns over uncovered manholes in Gazipur, particularly during heavy rainfall and flooding.

Lebanese Civil Defense teams have recovered 13 bodies from the rubble in the Nabatieh and Marjayoun regions of southern Lebanon. According to a statement released on Monday, rescue teams are continuing operations in Nabatieh, Dibbine, and Blat to clear main and secondary roads. The effort aims to remove debris and restore normal traffic movement in the affected areas.

The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported that since Israeli attacks began on March 2, at least 4,106 people have been killed and 12,153 injured across the country. Emergency assistance operations are still underway in the damaged regions as rescue teams continue their search and recovery efforts.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as both the country's leader and the head of the ruling Labour Party. Professor Dr. Md. Atikul Haque, Associate Professor of Microbiology at Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University (HSTU), has developed a Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) test method capable of detecting the foodborne bacterium Bacillus cereus within 90 minutes. The research, conducted in collaboration with Noakhali Science and Technology University, was published in the international journal Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology. The study found that about 80 percent of field samples tested positive for at least one toxin gene, with the highest contamination in animal feed, followed by milk and eggs.

Compared to conventional PCR tests, which require 3–5 hours and expensive thermal cyclers, the LAMP method is faster, cheaper (around USD 2.5 per test), and can be performed using basic heating equipment. It is also about 10,000 times more sensitive, showing 96.1% diagnostic sensitivity. Dr. Haque stated that this innovation offers Bangladesh an effective and affordable tool for rapid bacterial detection, even in resource-limited settings.

Researchers plan to expand the study nationwide, develop multiplex and species-specific LAMP systems, and create portable field kits for on-site testing. They also aim to integrate the technology into the national food safety framework to strengthen surveillance.

A Jhenaidah court has sentenced Abu Taher to death for the rape and murder of four-year-old Tabachchum in Kaliganj upazila’s Barobazar area. The verdict was delivered on Monday, June 22, 2026, by Judge Salehuzzaman of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal. The court also fined the convict five lakh taka and ordered that the amount be recovered by selling his property.

According to the case documents, on February 26, Abu Taher lured the child to his house with chips and juice, raped her, and then strangled her to death. He hid the body in a septic tank of a nearby school. Police arrested him the next day from his brother’s rented house in Kushtia town. The investigation officer submitted the charge sheet on May 26, and the trial proceeded swiftly with charges framed on June 16, witness testimonies on June 17, and arguments completed by June 21.

Prosecutor Akidul Islam expressed satisfaction with the verdict, noting that the judgment was delivered within 116 days. The victim’s parents also welcomed the ruling and demanded prompt execution of the sentence.

The Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) has ordered the deployment of army personnel in six districts, including Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj, Faridpur, Gopalganj, and Chattogram. The deployment, effective until June 30, 2026, follows concerns over possible unrest linked to the banned Awami League’s upcoming anniversary on June 23. The Islami Bank Conscious Customers Forum has demanded that a full board of directors be formed for Islami Bank within the next 24 hours, comprising honest, skilled, and professional individuals. Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir announced that the government is working to reduce bureaucratic hurdles and simplify licensing procedures to create a more business-friendly environment. During Prime Minister Tareq Rahman’s first state visit to Malaysia, both countries agreed to strengthen cooperation across nine major sectors, including trade, investment, technology, labor, education, defense, and regional collaboration. A research team from Khulna University’s Fisheries and Marine Resource Technology (FMRT) Discipline has achieved success in cultivating giant freshwater prawns and carp fish together using the Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) method in low-salinity coastal water. The environmentally friendly IMTA system, based on the principle of 'one’s waste, another’s food,' increased both production and nutritional value of the fish.

The five-month experiment was conducted in twelve 120-square-meter earthen ponds, where lotus, guppy grass, and freshwater mussels were added to improve water quality and nutrient recycling. Results showed higher growth, survival, and production rates for prawns and G3 carp compared to conventional methods. Profit margins rose from 41% in traditional farming to 74% in the most successful IMTA treatment. The fish and prawns produced contained higher levels of essential amino acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Lead researcher Professor Dr. Md. Lifat Rahi stated that the IMTA system offers a sustainable and profitable solution for small-scale farmers in Bangladesh’s increasingly saline coastal regions, while also providing consumers with safer and more nutritious protein sources.
