Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Maulana Rafiqul Islam Khan MP called on ulema to play a leading role in a movement to establish an equitable welfare state. He made the appeal as chief guest at a mufassir conference organized by the Dhaka division of Bangladesh Majlisul Mufassirin at the Dhaka Reporters Unity auditorium on Monday afternoon.

Khan said respected Quranic interpreters should play a historic role with their highest wisdom at what he described as the most suitable time for Islam to achieve victory in the country. He urged them to seek the satisfaction of the Almighty through that role.

Special guest Maulana Abdul Halim called on ulema to put aside minor differences and work in unity in the struggle to establish an equitable state. Dr Khalilur Rahman Madani said the sole aim of mufassirs would be to bring the noble teachings of the Quran to every household. The conference, chaired by Dhaka division president Maulana Abdul Mannan Ansari, also heard from central leaders and other mufassirs, including Maulana Abdul Hamid and Professor Maulana Nurul Amin MP.

An HSC candidate was expelled in Chattogram after allegedly using an artificial intelligence app to cheat during an examination. The incident occurred Monday at the Government Haji Muhammad Mohsin College examination centre in the city. After receiving the question paper, the student secretly photographed it and used an AI application on a mobile phone to find answers, which were then written in the examination hall.

A centre inspector noticed the activity and the candidate was immediately expelled. The mobile phone used by the student was also seized. The expelled candidate is a humanities student from a college in Chattogram city. On the day, the Chattogram Education Board held first-paper examinations in civics and good governance, theoretical biology, business organisation and management, and food and nutrition.

Chattogram Education Board examination controller Md Parvez Sazzad Chowdhury confirmed the incident. He said the candidate had collected answers through an AI app using a mobile phone and was expelled under examination conduct regulations after being caught. Board sources said carrying mobile phones in examination halls is completely prohibited during the ongoing HSC examinations, while strict monitoring against cheating and irregularities continues at centres.

Three men were detained in a special anti-drug operation in Goalanda upazila of Rajbari and later sentenced for drug use. The district Department of Narcotics Control conducted the operation in different parts of the upazila on Monday morning. At about 2 pm, a mobile court sentenced each man to three days of simple imprisonment and fined them Tk100 under the Narcotics Control Act.

The mobile court was presided over by Goalanda Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Md Muntasir Khan. Those convicted were Akkas Ali, 35, of Dewan Para in Goalanda municipal town; Rana Sardar, 24, of East Ujanchar; and Royal Sheikh, 25, of Matubbar Para.

Muntasir Khan said the district administration and the Department of Narcotics Control were working jointly to build a drug-free society, and regular operations against drugs would continue. Deputy Director of the district Department of Narcotics Control Abu Abdullah Zahid said special operations were being conducted regularly in different areas of the district to prevent drug abuse and create a drug-free society.

A Saudi expatriate, Md. Yamin Bhuiya, 30, was killed after a truck crushed an autorickshaw in the Bhadughar area of Brahmanbaria town on the Cumilla-Sylhet highway. The crash occurred on Monday evening. Yamin, son of Md. Abul Bashar, was from Bijeshwar village in Ramrail union of Sadar upazila.

His wife, Suma Akter, was injured in the incident and is receiving treatment at the district sadar hospital. Family members said the couple were returning home by autorickshaw after visiting her parental home when the truck hit their vehicle in Bhadughar. Both suffered serious injuries in the collision.

Local people rescued the couple and took them to the district sadar hospital, where doctors declared Yamin dead. Brahmanbaria Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Md. Shahidul Islam said the body has been kept in the hospital morgue for investigation. Legal action over the incident is under process.

Dhaka University Central Students’ Union, or DUCSU, has called for relaxing existing curfew rules in women’s residential halls to ensure a safer, more humane and student-friendly living environment. During a follow-up meeting with Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr A B M Obaidul Islam on Monday, the union restated longstanding concerns and demands from women hall students, according to a report published on July 27.

DUCSU Vice-President Sadik Kayem said hall entry and exit policies should be updated to match women students’ academic, research, cultural and extracurricular activities. The union sought reasonable extensions to hall gate-closing and late-entry hours. It also proposed allowing non-residential students and students from other women’s halls to enter when needed upon showing valid university identification.

The union urged quicker, simpler services for illness and emergencies, saying existing administrative procedures increase students’ hardship. It emphasized installing digital security gates using fingerprints, facial recognition or university ID-card punches. The vice-chancellor said the issues would receive serious consideration and announced plans to form a committee to review the related matters, including the proposed digital gates.

Border Guard Bangladesh personnel seized illegal Indian current nets, medicines and leaf cigarettes in separate operations in Kushtia, with a total seizure value of Tk44.85 lakh. The information was released in a press statement sent on behalf of the commander of Kushtia Battalion, 47 BGB, and published on July 27, 2026.

In an operation in the Bhalabaria area of the upazila, BGB recovered 590 kilograms of ownerless illegal Indian current nets, 25 China nets and 25 kilograms of net thread. The seized fishing-related materials were valued at Tk41.80 lakh. BGB said the recovered illegal nets were subsequently burned and destroyed.

In a separate operation at Dharmadaha field on the Daulatpur border, personnel recovered 500 Indian dexamethasone tablets, 500 cyproheptadine tablets and 98 packets of leaf cigarettes, all found ownerless. The seizure value of those materials was Tk305,390. The press statement did not identify any owner of the goods or report any arrests in connection with either operation.

Ad-din Medical College Hospital in Moghbazar, Dhaka, has received approval to resume medical services after remaining closed for 45 days following the deaths of six children. Hospital authorities said outpatient, inpatient and emergency services, along with all other medical care, will restart at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, July 28.

The announcement was issued on Monday in a notice signed by Tarikul Islam Mukul, director of the Company Affairs Department at Ad-din Foundation. Earlier that afternoon, a government notification signed by Health and Family Welfare Ministry Secretary Md Kamruzzaman Chowdhury stated that the hospital’s licence had been reinstated.

In its notice, Ad-din authorities expressed gratitude to Allah for the opportunity to restart treatment services following the licence restoration. They also thanked the government, the Health and Family Welfare Ministry, the Directorate General of Health Services, service recipients, politicians, physicians, professional organisations, lawyers, journalists, media workers, social media workers, well-wishers and other concerned parties. The authority additionally thanked people who had spoken in support of the hospital at different times.

The Department of Narcotics Control recovered 125 grams of heroin valued at about Tk 1.25 million in Netrokona and detained three people, including Lalita Akter, 45, whom it described as the alleged ringleader. The operation took place early Monday at a temporary checkpoint on the Netrokona-Mymensingh regional highway in the Chollisha area of the district headquarters.

A team from the Netrokona district office searched a Dhaka-bound passenger bus and recovered the heroin from Md Sagar Ahmed, 38, a resident of Matihar upazila in Rajshahi, who was posing as a passenger. Based on information provided by him, officers detained Md Masud Mia, 42, from the Goruhatta area of Netrokona Sadar upazila. Lalita was later detained during an operation in Gopalpur Bazar, Barhatta upazila.

The department said Lalita has seven cases under the Narcotics Control Act. Two button mobile phones were also seized during the operation. On Monday evening, Sub-Inspector Md Nazmul Huda filed a case at Netrokona Model Police Station under the Narcotics Control Act. Assistant Director Md Nazmul Haque said operations against drugs would continue and the three detainees would be sent to court the following morning.

Bangladesh Meteorological Department has forecast rain accompanied by gusty winds across parts of the country for five days from Monday evening, driven by a deep depression over the northwestern Bay of Bengal. Moderate to heavy rainfall is possible in various areas, with very heavy rain expected at isolated locations, the department said in a forecast issued Monday.

The seasonal low over the northwestern Bay and adjacent Odisha-West Bengal coast has intensified into a deep depression. At 6pm Monday, it was located over the northwestern Bay and the adjacent West Bengal-North Odisha coast. It may move northward and cross the West Bengal-North Odisha coast by Monday evening. The monsoon trough extends through Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, the depression’s centre, southern Bangladesh and Assam.

Rain is forecast in most areas of Rajshahi, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions during the first two days, while rainfall may expand across all eight divisions on the third day. Very heavy rain is possible in parts of Rangpur, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet during the fourth and fifth days.

The Shyamgram-Salimগঞ্জ regional road in Nabiganj upazila of Brahmanbaria has reopened after repairs were completed within three months. Local MP Abdul Mannan formally inaugurated a box culvert on the road on Monday afternoon. Traffic returned to normal immediately after the opening, ending travel hardship for more than 100,000 people in Shyamgram, Barikandi and Salimগঞ্জ unions, as well as residents of Banchharampur upazila.

The road collapsed near Bogahani village in Shyamgram union on May 27, the day before Eid, under pressure from prolonged heavy rainwater. The damage cut off road links between the affected area and district and upazila headquarters. After Amardesh published a report on the disruption, Advocate Abdul Mannan inspected the damaged site on May 29 and instructed that box-culvert construction begin on an emergency basis.

The inauguration was attended by BNP central executive committee member Taqdir Hossain Mohammad Jasim, Upazila Executive Engineer Ferdous Ali, local representatives, political leaders and residents. Ferdous Ali said cooperation from the MP and district administration enabled the construction to be completed quickly and road communication to resume.

Bangladesh Labour Welfare Federation central president Advocate Atikur Rahman said workers’ basic rights have not been ensured even after 55 years of independence. He made the remarks on Monday as chief guest at a river transport workers’ gathering at the Bangladesh Photo Journalists Association auditorium in the capital, organized by the federation’s water transport sector.

Rahman said workers joined students during the July Revolution to seek their rights and that more than 300 workers were martyred. He said a complete list of those workers would be formally published soon. He added that working people have faced multiple forms of discrimination for a long time, while expectations of fair wages, social dignity, security and state recognition in a new Bangladesh have not been met.

He said most workers still lack fair wages, wage boards, appointment letters, identity cards, employment rules, provident funds, rationing, medical care and social security. The gathering called for implementation of the July Charter and Labour Reform Commission recommendations, dignified pay and appointment letters for river workers, and an end to extortion on waterways.

Chapainawabganj-1 lawmaker Keramat Ali said the blood of martyrs Abu Sayeed, Mugdha and Abu Raihan, along with 1,400 martyrs, would not be in vain. He made the remarks on Monday afternoon at a brief rally in Shibganj, Chapainawabganj, following a protest march marking the second anniversary of the July mass uprising. The gathering demanded implementation of the referendum verdict and the July Charter, as well as trials for genocide.

Keramat Ali said students and the public had made their position clear, stating that they wanted to live and die in the country. He alleged that there had been betrayal of the blood shed. He also said demands for reforms had been buried and accused unspecified parties of betraying the people.

The protest march was organized by the Chapainawabganj district western branch of Chhatra Shibir. It started from Madina Mosque and ended in front of Shibganj Central Mosque. The rally was chaired by district western branch president Shahidullah. Speakers included central Chhatra Shibir HRM secretary Noman Hossain Nayon, district western branch secretary Abdul Awal, former president Mamun Hasan and others.
