A new social-media organization, the E20 Janata Party (EJP), has gained rapid attention in India amid controversy over ethanol-blended E20 petrol. Using a crab as its symbol, the group is campaigning for greater transparency in ethanol policy, consumer choice and availability of 100 percent pure petrol. In posts on X on July 26, it also called for the resignation of Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari.

EJP says it does not oppose ethanol blending entirely and is not seeking subsidies. It wants mandatory disclosure of ethanol and other components in each fuel, government publication of costs, benefits and possible impacts, and independent research into effects on mileage, engine performance, pollution and maintenance costs. After its public launch early Sunday, it surpassed 200,000 Instagram followers within hours and reached about 35,000 followers on X. Its leadership and founders remain unidentified.

The petroleum ministry acknowledged two weeks earlier that E20 could reduce mileage by 3 to 5 percent and said ethanol blending would not lower fuel prices. The government cites foreign-exchange savings, higher farmer incomes and lower carbon-dioxide emissions. A citizens’ group has called a Delhi march for July 31, while taxi and tourism transport groups announced a Parliament march on August 4.

Police recovered the bullet-riddled body of a 21-year-old man, identified as Imon, from in front of Arangghata railway station in Khulna metropolitan area on Monday, July 27. Officers reached the scene around 5:30pm after receiving information from local residents. Imon was the son of Sobhan Sheikh, a resident of Arangghata police station area.

Police initially suspect that assailants shot Imon dead and left his body at the location. However, law enforcement authorities have not yet determined the motive or identified those responsible. Arangghata police station Officer-in-Charge Md Halimur Islam confirmed that residents saw a young man lying with gunshot injuries and informed police, who recovered him dead.

An investigation has begun around the scene. Senior Khulna Metropolitan Police officials and the crime scene unit are collecting evidence, while investigators gather local information, speak with witnesses and examine possible leads. After preparation of an inquest report, the body will be sent to the Khulna Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Police said the autopsy findings and investigation progress may clarify the cause of the killing and those involved.

Bangladesh’s University Grants Commission, or UGC, has included a proposal to make internships mandatory for students at all public and private universities in a draft strategic plan for higher education transformation. UGC Chairman Professor Dr Mamun Ahmed announced the information at a reception organised by the University of Dhaka’s Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The report was published on July 27, 2026.

Under the proposal, structured internship opportunities would be created for students in government offices, autonomous institutions, industrial establishments and private organisations. Ahmed said many graduates fall behind in the job market because they lack real workplace experience and necessary skills. The UGC aims to reduce that gap and make higher education more employment-oriented and industry-friendly.

The commission is preparing a five-year strategic action plan and will conduct a national survey to identify students’ skill levels and gaps. Its findings would guide changes to curricula, teaching methods and assessment systems. The government and commercial institutions would jointly provide financial support for internships, while the UGC would handle policy coordination, monitoring and implementation support.

Model and actress Snigdha Chowdhury has sought justice and security in a case alleging physical abuse by the chairman of an institution. At a press conference on the afternoon of July 27, 2026, she said she was called to a hospital after being offered an advertising contract and was then physically abused. She said she has filed a case over the allegation.

Chowdhury said the accused has already obtained bail, expressing anger that no arrest was made despite the allegation. She appealed to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for justice, saying she believed he would look into the matter and ensure that she receives a fair outcome.

She also told journalists that she has repeatedly received death threats. Police arrested two men in Chattogram city after recovering a foreign pistol and four rounds of ammunition, according to police. Mohammad Asif, 25, and Saidul Islam, also known as Arif, 24, were detained during a raid near Wajedia playground on the Oxygen–Koyesh Road in the Bayezid Bostami police station area on the night of July 27. Police said Asif was a fugitive accused named in a warrant in another case.

Chattogram Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner for Crime and Operations Muhammad Faisal Ahmed said officers had launched the operation to arrest Asif. He said Asif and his companion tried to flee after noticing police presence. Police recovered a foreign pistol from Asif's waist, with two rounds loaded in its magazine, and found two more rounds in Arif's trouser pocket. They could not produce valid licences or documents for the weapon and ammunition, police said.

Police claimed the two men said during initial questioning that they were associates of identified criminal David Emon and were involved in extortion and other criminal activities using illegal weapons. An Arms Act case has been filed at Bayezid Bostami police station. Mobar Hossain Emon said he did not know the detainees and denied they were his associates. Police records list 11 cases against Asif and two extortion cases against Arif.

Three professors have joined the Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC) as full-time members. They are Professor Md. Mehedi Hasan Khan of the University of Dhaka’s Population Sciences Department, Professor Dr. Md. Aslam Hossain of its Pharmaceutical Chemistry Department, and Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Chowdhury of Bangladesh Medical University’s Vascular Surgery Department. They joined UGC Secretary Dr. Md. Fakhrul Islam on Monday morning.

The Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Education Ministry issued the appointment notification on July 26 under Section 4(1)(b) of the Bangladesh University Grants Commission Order, 1973, as amended. Mehedi Hasan Khan is acting dean of the University of Dhaka’s Faculty of Social Sciences and joined its Population Sciences Department as an assistant professor in 2003.

Aslam Hossain has been involved in teaching and research for more than three decades and has published 54 research papers in domestic and international journals. Niaz Ahmed Chowdhury chairs Bangladesh Medical University’s Endovascular and Laser Surgery Department and has more than three decades of experience in medical practice, research and academic leadership. Their appointments are effective from their joining dates and will run for four years.

A 60-year-old woman, Nurjahan Begum, has died after contracting dengue in Chattogram, where 457 new infections have been recorded in July. The information was released by the district civil surgeon’s office on July 27. Her death raises the district’s dengue death toll this year to three, while July has become the year’s highest monthly infection period.

Nurjahan Begum, a resident of the city’s Panchlaish area, was taken to the private Parkview Hospital on July 26 in critical condition and was declared dead by the attending doctor. Doctors said dengue and complications related to hypertension led to multi-organ dysfunction syndrome. From January 1 to July 27, Chattogram recorded 755 dengue cases, including 191 women, 439 men and 125 children.

Another 27 dengue patients were identified in the previous 24 hours. A total of 99 patients are receiving treatment at government and private hospitals across the district, including 77 in government facilities and 22 in private hospitals. Civil Surgeon Dr Jahangir Alam urged residents to eliminate mosquito breeding sites, keep homes and surrounding areas clean, and seek medical advice promptly if fever develops.

Rajshahi University saw repeated clashes after an alleged attack on RAKSU leaders, including General Secretary Salahuddin Ammar, at the RAKSU building and central library premises on Monday afternoon. The incident was reported around 4pm. Former Chhatra League worker Anas, now linked to Chhatra Dal politics, was accused of arriving with several people and attacking leaders at the RAKSU building. Ammar and RAKSU assistant science secretary Nazmus Sakib were reported injured.

The dispute followed discussions at the proctor’s office over a written complaint by a female student of the Department of Sanskrit against Chhatra Dal worker Mohsin Alam. Anas was accused of arguing with Proctor Professor Md Mahbubur Rahman during the matter. Further confrontations involving Anas and the RAKSU general secretary were also reported. When Anas and his companions took shelter in the library reading room, RAKSU and Shibir activists were accused of entering and assaulting them.

The proctor and public relations officials tried to calm both sides and arranged hospital transport for an injured former Chhatra League leader. RAKSU and hall parliament leaders began a sit-in, alleging a “safe exit” was provided to former Chhatra League activists and demanding arrests. Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Faridul Islam said facts would be verified through a fact-finding committee, with a high-level investigation committee to be formed in coordination with police.

Police arrested a man in Daganbhuiyan on July 27 after a day laborer was allegedly stabbed to death beneath Feni town’s Mohipal flyover for protesting an attempted molestation of his wife. The victim, Nur Nabi Hossain, 30, was attacked at about 5:30am on July 26 and later died while being taken to Dhaka for treatment.

According to police, Nur Nabi and his wife, Bibi Fatema, were sleeping under the flyover when the accused, Md Shah Paran Faisal, also known as Saddam Hossain, allegedly tried to molest Fatema. Police said an argument followed after Nur Nabi intervened, and Faisal allegedly stabbed him repeatedly on both sides of his abdomen before fleeing.

Nur Nabi, originally from Bhola Sadar, had come to Feni after losing everything to river erosion and supported himself by collecting bottles and working as a day laborer. Fatema filed a murder case with Feni Model Police Station. Police said Faisal admitted involvement during preliminary questioning, and officers recovered a bloodstained knife from an abandoned pit beneath the flyover based on his information. He was sent to jail through a court.

Social Welfare Minister Professor Dr Zahid Hossain said no one would be left without treatment because of a lack of money in a future humane Bangladesh led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. He made the remarks on Monday as chief guest at a World Head and Neck Cancer Day 2026 event at the National Institute of Ear, Nose and Throat in Tejgaon, Dhaka.

The observance, marked in 171 countries, carried the theme, “Speak Out, Diagnose Early, Save Lives.” The minister said the government was committed to overall development as well as the health system, and that pledges in the BNP election manifesto would be implemented gradually. He also urged journalists to raise public awareness that people who are mute and deaf can recover.

At the event, Hossain inaugurated a newly built Auditory Verbal Therapy Centre. Children who have lost hearing from birth or later and receive costly cochlear implantation surgery with Social Welfare Ministry support will be taught to speak naturally through therapy at the centre, which is run under the Health Ministry. The minister said he planned to expand such centres to divisional level. He later distributed grant cheques and devices to patients with head and neck-related illnesses.

Andrea Pirlo has withdrawn from contention to become Italy’s national football team coach after controversy over his commercial relationship with Russian betting company Funbet. The former 2006 World Cup winner announced the decision on Instagram before any formal appointment, following political and ethical questions surrounding the association.

The Italian Football Federation had considered Pirlo its leading candidate after Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola indicated they were unavailable. Ninety-three trainee assistant superintendents of police have been transferred to different police units, according to a notification signed by Inspector General of Police Md Ali Hossain Fakir. The transfer order was issued on Monday and reported on July 27, 2026, with a list of the officers released.

The notification said the trainee assistant superintendents will join their new workplaces after satisfactorily completing their practical training. Their postings are therefore tied to the completion of that training requirement.

The officers have been assigned to units including the CID, DMP, RAB, Cox’s Bazar and Khulna. Other listed destinations are APBN, GMP, CMP, RPMP, KMP, SMP, BMP and Industrial Police.

A government hospital in Hatía, an island upazila of Noakhali, administered anti-snake venom for the first time and saved an eight-year-old child bitten by a venomous snake. The child, Rahat, son of Firoz Uddin from Ward 7 of Sonadia Union, was bitten at about 7pm on 26 July while going to Maghrib prayers. He was admitted to Hatía Upazila Health Complex around midnight after his condition did not improve.

Medical Officer Dr Rabiul Hossain Niloy said examinations identified multiple signs of venomous snakebite, including broken neck sign, ptosis and unconsciousness. A 20-minute clot observation test confirmed envenomation. The medical team consulted the upazila health and family planning officer and the resident medical officer before administering antivenom with the father’s consent.

Firoz Uddin said he had initially sought help from local traditional healers but saw no improvement, and that his son is now substantially better after treatment. Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Manoshi Rani Sarkar called it the first antivenom administration in the health complex’s history and said staff involved performed their duties sincerely. She said instructions were issued to continue such emergency care more efficiently in the future.
