Police recovered the body of APBn-6 Sub-Inspector (Armed) B.M. Mahmudul Islam from a pond near his in-laws’ home in Paikandi Union of Gopalganj Sadar Upazila on Monday morning. The body was recovered at about 8:30am. Mahmudul Islam, 38, was the son of Haidar Ali Bhuiyan of Bijoypasha village and was posted in Mahalchhari, Khagrachhari.

Police detained his wife, Fatema Kaniz, and father-in-law, Kabirul Islam alias Jhunu Sheikh, for questioning. Local residents informed police after seeing a body floating in a pond near the in-laws’ house. Police later recovered the body and sent it to the morgue of Gopalganj 250-bed General Hospital for an autopsy.

Mahmudul Islam’s elder brother, B.M. Ashikuzzaman, alleged that a dispute had arisen with his wife and her family over money to send a brother-in-law abroad after the officer came home on leave. He said he suspected the in-laws had killed him and dumped his body in the pond, and demanded an investigation and justice. Officer-in-Charge Aminul Islam said Mahmudul Islam had returned on leave from his workplace last Friday and that the cause of death would be known after the autopsy report.

Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said Bangladesh is now open to foreign investment as the China Economic and Industrial Zone formally began operations in Anwara, Chattogram, on Sunday. He described the inauguration as a milestone for the economies of Chattogram and the country.

Imran Sheikh, an assistant officer at the Satair ‘Kha’ Union Land Office in Boalmari, Faridpur, was temporarily suspended after a video showing him taking Tk 5,000 spread on social media. The Faridpur deputy commissioner’s office issued the suspension order on Sunday, after the 2-minute-22-second video was released online in the evening and prompted widespread criticism.

The footage shows Sheikh counting money received from a service seeker. The conversation identifies the person as Baharul Alam of Satair, son of Syed Abu Hasan. The Upazila Fisheries Department seized a large quantity of banned fishing nets valued at about Tk 3 million during an operation at Dhamura Bazar in Uzirpur Upazila, Barishal. According to the fisheries department, the seized items included 253 China duari nets, 65,000 metres of current nets and 67 boda nets. Upazila Fisheries Officer Prosen Majumdar led the operation. Upazila Rural Development Officer Md Moniruzzaman, Uzirpur Model Police Station Sub-Inspector Ripon Shikdar, fisheries staff, a representative of the National Fishermen’s Association and local dignitaries were present.

Majumdar said the use of banned nets is severely harmful to fish breeding and biodiversity in natural water bodies. He said regular operations are being conducted to stop the use of illegal nets, alongside awareness campaigns aimed at fishers. He added that such operations will continue to protect fisheries resources.

A source from Yemen’s Houthi movement, Ansarullah, claimed that Yemeni armed forces targeted three Saudi oil tankers in the Bab al-Mandab Strait over the past 48 hours. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Russia is strengthening cooperation with Iran and expanding military coordination with North Korea and China. The claim was reported on July 27, 2026, citing an interview Zelenskyy gave to Sky News.

Five forest workers, including Paner Chhara Range Officer Shariful Alam, were seriously injured in an attack in Ramu, Cox’s Bazar, after an eviction drive over alleged betel-leaf garden construction on reserved forest land. The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. on Monday in Samitipara of Ward 6, South Mithachhari Union. The injured workers were taken to Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital for treatment.

The other injured personnel were forest guard Humayun Kabir, gardeners Saidul Islam and Md Sajid, and ERT member Mizanur Rahman. Shariful Alam alleged that more than 100 people, led by BNP leaders Jasim Uddin, Nazir Hossain and Sahab Uddin, attacked the team with local weapons and sticks as it returned after the operation. Jasim Uddin is identified as president of Ward 6 BNP in South Mithachhari Union.

Divisional Forest Officer Abdullah Al Mamun said two workers, including the range officer, suffered head injuries, while three others had broken arms. The forest department was preparing to file a case by the afternoon. Ramu police said no complaint had yet been received. Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch police arrested Md Nazrul Islam, general secretary of the Satkhira district Awami League, from the Bashundhara Residential Area in the capital. He was detained from his home at about 12pm on Monday. The report was published and updated on 27 July 2026.

This year’s SSC and equivalent examinations began on April 21, 2026, and continued until May 20, followed by practical examinations. More than 1.857 million candidates took part in SSC examinations under nine general education boards, Dakhil examinations under the Madrasah Education Board, and SSC and Dakhil vocational examinations under the Technical Education Board.

Police recovered a bomb-like object from an abandoned bag near the planned National Citizen Party, or NCP, procession and roadside rally site in Gangni, Meherpur. The object was found at about 12:30pm on Monday in a vegetable-filled bag outside the Hanif Paribahan counter in the Gangni bus stand area. Local sources said the bag was about 10 metres from the designated gathering venue.

Residents became suspicious after seeing the abandoned bag and informed police. Gangni police went to the scene, recovered the bag and found the bomb-like object inside. The item was taken to the police station for security reasons, while security was strengthened at the rally site and surrounding areas.

Earlier that morning, police recovered three effigy-like objects carrying images of NCP central leaders and various writings in front of Gangni Pilot Secondary School. Officer-in-Charge Muhaddid Morshed Chowdhury said specialists would examine whether the recovered item was actually explosive. Police are also investigating who left it there and whether the two incidents are connected. No one had been reported detained when the report was written.

Ad-din Medical College Hospital in Maghbazar, Dhaka, has regained its licence. The Health Services Division of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said in a letter on Monday that it had withdrawn the order cancelling the hospital’s licence and allowed it to resume operations.

Bangladesh Border Guard personnel seized four pistols, 14 rounds of ammunition and other equipment after a gunfight with armed smugglers near the Yamini Para border in Matiranga upazila of Khagrachhari. A patrol team from Yamini Para Battalion, 23 BGB, conducted a special operation late Monday night near the Indian border in Singhapara village, Tablachhari union.

Battalion commander Lieutenant Colonel Md Khalid Ibn Hossain said the patrol identified the smugglers' position at about 3:15 a.m. acting on a tip-off. A search of the site recovered two foreign pistols, two locally made pistols, 14 rounds of ammunition, other items and 1,600 Indian rupees.

According to the commander, armed smugglers suddenly opened fire on BGB personnel as they were returning with the seized weapons and materials. BGB returned fire in self-defence, and intermittent firing continued for about eight to 10 minutes before the smugglers fled. No casualties were reported on either side. BGB said it was continuing close monitoring and strict surveillance of suspected routes for illegal entry, arms and ammunition trafficking, and drug smuggling.

Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal issued arrest warrants against fugitive accused, including Sheikh Hasina, in a crimes-against-humanity case over killings surrounding a Hefazat-e-Islam rally at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel, Dhaka. The three-member Tribunal-2 panel, led by Chairman Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, made the order on Monday.

Formal charges had previously been filed before the tribunal against Hasina and 40 others. The accused list includes former ministers, political figures, former police and military officials, journalists and others. The report said 10 of the 41 accused are currently in custody.
