A Tangail court has sentenced a woman to 13 years of rigorous imprisonment for killing her infant son and concealing the body. The verdict was delivered on Monday afternoon by Judge Md Hafizur Rahman of Tangail Special Tribunal-1. The convicted woman, Ayna Begum, aged 24, is the wife of Md Zahirul Islam from Shibpur Chandanpara village in Mirzapur upazila and the daughter of Aminul Islam from Lauhati Madhyapara village in Delduar upazila. The court also fined her 40,000 taka, with an additional six months of simple imprisonment in case of non-payment.

According to the case details, Ayna Begum was staying at her father’s house after giving birth. On August 30, 2020, her husband Zahirul Islam learned that their 18-day-old son was missing. After searching, he found the baby’s body in a nearby canal. The investigation revealed that the infant, named Raihan, had been suffocated to death. Following the discovery, Zahirul Islam filed a murder case against his wife at Delduar Police Station.

The court’s ruling concludes a case that began nearly six years ago, bringing closure to the child’s death investigation.

A doctor at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis has accused Israel of carrying out a 'health genocide' in Gaza, citing the collapse of medical services despite a ceasefire agreement. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, under the U.S.-mediated truce signed in October 2025, around 21,000 Palestinians were supposed to receive permission to leave Gaza for medical treatment. However, fewer than 7,500 have been able to leave so far, meaning only about 36 percent of the agreement has been implemented.

Al Jazeera’s Gaza correspondent Tareq Abu Azzoum reported that thousands of people approved for emergency evacuation remain trapped in Gaza, many of whom are unlikely to survive. Dr. Ahmed Al-Farra, head of the pediatric department at Nasser Hospital, said the situation has become the worst in a thousand days, with hospitals lacking supplies and staff. He described Israel’s actions as targeting the health sector and turning hospitals into unusable concrete shells.

State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj said the government aims to improve the quality of primary education through effective collaboration with NGOs. Speaking as chief guest at the Geo-NGO Collaboration Dialogue held at BRAC Centre in Dhaka on Monday, he emphasized that meaningful change in education requires joint efforts from the government, administrative systems, and development partners.

Hajjaj stated that the government’s main goal in education reform is to enhance learning outcomes, focusing on five key areas: curriculum, teachers, administration, infrastructure, and technology. He added that initiatives are underway to make primary education more modern, efficient, and technology-driven, including transparent teacher recruitment and transfer systems, improved administrative capacity, digital monitoring, and tech-based management.

He further noted that with over 65,000 government primary schools nationwide, realistic, scalable, and sustainable initiatives are essential. The government plans to leverage NGOs’ field experience and innovative models, particularly to ensure education access for children with disabilities, pre-primary learners, non-formal students, urban migrants, tea garden communities, and marginalized groups.

A group of teenage gang members attacked and looted the house of an expatriate in Mahbullyahpur, Begumganj upazila of Noakhali on Sunday night. The attackers took cash, gold ornaments, and mobile phones, and injured four members of the family, including expatriate Abu Sujan, his brother journalist Anwar Parvez, sister-in-law Rubina Akter, and sister Yasmin Akter. The injured were admitted to a local private hospital.

According to Anwar Parvez, his brother Abu Sujan had returned from France 18 days earlier and became a target of a local teenage gang led by a youth named Junaid. The gang allegedly carried out the attack, vandalized the house, and looted valuables. Police arrived at the scene after a call was made to the national emergency number 999 and rescued the injured.

Begumganj Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shamsuzzaman said police visited the scene, rescued the victims, and are monitoring the situation. Legal action will be taken upon receiving a written complaint.

Police in Cumilla have arrested four individuals in connection with the shooting of school student Ethan Ahmed, who was injured during an armed clash between two local groups. The arrests were announced on Monday by Towhidul Anwar, Officer-in-Charge of Cumilla Kotwali Model Police Station. The incident occurred on June 25 in the Katabil area following tensions between the 'Apu Group' and 'Sabbir Group' over drug-related disputes.

Within 12 hours of the shooting, police detained Jamshed Hossain Shrabon, 22, with a foreign pistol and six rounds of ammunition. Subsequent operations across different areas led to the arrest of three more suspects: Asif, 26; Ashik, 35; and Imon, 19, all residents of the Kotwali area. Cumilla Superintendent of Police Md. Anisuzzaman stated that no criminal involved in drugs or illegal arms would be spared.

He added that police operations to apprehend remaining suspects and recover illegal weapons are ongoing, emphasizing the district police’s firm stance against drugs and firearms.

Bhangoora Municipality in Pabna has announced a budget of Tk 18.24 crore for the 2026–2027 fiscal year. The announcement was made on Monday at 11 a.m. in the municipal conference room by Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Municipal Administrator Mizanur Rahman. The projected revenue income is Tk 5.74 crore, while development and project income is estimated at Tk 12.50 crore, totaling Tk 18.24 crore in expected income.

On the expenditure side, Tk 5.38 crore 15 thousand has been allocated for revenue expenses and Tk 12.50 crore for development and project expenses, bringing total projected expenditure to Tk 17.88 crore 15 thousand. The budget leaves a surplus of Tk 35 lakh 85 thousand. The announcement event was attended by the municipal secretary, executive engineer, accounts officer, tax collector, and other officials and journalists.

According to the municipal administrator, the budget prioritizes improving civic services, including cleanliness, road and drainage development, waste management, city lighting, and safe water supply, while reducing unnecessary expenses to ensure a citizen-friendly and practical budget.

Bangladesh’s Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud told Parliament on Monday that despite improvements in electricity generation, some areas will continue to experience load-shedding. He reported that the country’s electricity demand stood at 14,839 megawatts while production reached 14,500 megawatts, leaving a shortfall of 339 megawatts. The minister said efforts were underway to reduce this gap and ensure uninterrupted supply.

In his statement under Rule 300, Mahmud explained that two power plants had gone offline due to technical faults, causing about 3,000 megawatts to drop from the national grid and leading to widespread load-shedding, including in Dhaka. He confirmed that both plants had resumed production as of Monday, improving the overall situation compared to the previous day.

The minister emphasized that the government was working to minimize remaining shortages and stabilize power distribution across the country.

A man named Mohammad Azad, aged 30, was seriously injured when stones were thrown at a moving train in Brahmanbaria. The incident occurred around 8:45 p.m. on Sunday near the Collegepara area as the Sylhet–Dhaka-bound Parabat Express passed through. According to a passenger, Azad was seated in the 'Dh' coach when a stone hurled from outside broke through the window and struck his head. Brahmanbaria Railway Police outpost in-charge Sub-Inspector Shah Alam said police were dispatched to the scene after receiving the report. Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir has announced a 36-day nationwide program to commemorate the second anniversary of the July uprising under the theme “July’s Pledge: Building a Just Bangladesh.” The announcement was made by the organization’s president, Nurul Islam, at a press conference held at Dhaka University’s Madhur Canteen. The program includes rallies, exhibitions, seminars, cultural events, and an online campaign titled “Echoes of July.”

Saudi Arabia has issued an urgent directive regarding the renewal of expatriate work permits. The country’s Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development, through its Qiwa platform, announced that only two days remain before the renewal deadline. Employers have until June 30 to renew or transfer work permits for their employees.

According to the Qiwa platform, starting July 1, any worker whose permit has been expired for more than three months will be automatically removed from their employer’s records. Employers who allow employees to work without a valid permit will be responsible for all financial liabilities accrued up to the last day of work. The ministry urged employers to complete all necessary renewal procedures before the deadline to avoid penalties.

North Korea has strongly criticized the ongoing joint military exercise between the United States and Japan, accusing Tokyo of exploiting global instability to transform itself into a 'militarist state.' According to a report by North Korea’s state news agency KCNA, the exercise, named 'Resolute Dragon,' is being used by Japan to test its ability to conduct overseas military operations.

Pyongyang further alleged that Japan’s deepening military cooperation with the United States is worsening security instability in the Asia-Pacific region. A Sirajganj court has sentenced six individuals to life imprisonment in a drug trafficking case. The verdict was delivered on Monday by Judge Nazrul Islam of the Sirajganj Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-3. Each convict was also fined 100,000 taka, with an additional one-year imprisonment in default of payment. Among the convicts, three were present during the verdict, while the remaining three are absconding.

According to the case documents, on July 15, 2012, police from Jamuna Bridge West Police Station intercepted a private car based on a tip-off and seized 150 bottles of Indian phensedyl. Three suspects were arrested on the spot, who later revealed the involvement of three others. Following investigation, police submitted a charge sheet against six individuals on December 31, 2012. After a lengthy trial and witness examination, the court delivered its judgment on Monday.

The ruling concludes a case that had been ongoing for nearly 14 years, marking a significant outcome in the region’s anti-drug enforcement efforts.

A case has been filed against 150 unidentified individuals after an incident of vandalism at the Kendua Rural Electrification Office in Netrokona. The event occurred around 8:30 a.m. on Sunday when angry customers, frustrated by continuous load-shedding and a power outage during the Argentina–Jordan World Cup football match, damaged several office windows.

Local sources reported that since Thursday, Kendua has been facing an acute power shortage, severely disrupting daily life amid intense heat. The Rural Electrification Office’s Deputy General Manager, Engineer Md. Omar Faruk, stated that the area has about 94,000 consumers, with a peak-hour demand of 27 megawatts but only 7 megawatts currently supplied. He said the shortage and vandalism have been reported to higher authorities.

Kendua Police confirmed receiving a written complaint from the power office, naming 100 to 150 unknown persons. Police have inspected the site and said the situation is now under control.
