Saiful Alam, Deputy General Manager of Faridganj Rural Electrification Office in Chandpur, was confined by employees in his office on Sunday afternoon following allegations of misconduct and mismanagement. The employees lifted the blockade after the General Manager announced Alam’s removal. Workers had earlier protested, demanding his dismissal for alleged incompetence and failure to protect staff from public assaults.

Police intervened to restore order.

Local residents and union leaders blamed the DGM for poor service and aggressive disconnection drives. The General Manager of Chandpur Palli Bidyut Samity-2 formed a three-member investigation committee and confirmed that disciplinary action would follow the inquiry.

In Nilphamari’s Kishoreganj Sadar Union, chairman Hossain Shahid Suhrawardy Grenet Babu has been accused of misappropriating government funds. Allegations state that he used money from a government project to build four shops on union council land in 2023, collected a total of 1 million taka in deposits, and has been pocketing monthly rent of 8,000 taka for four years instead of depositing it in the government treasury. Union council members have expressed anger over the alleged misuse of authority and funds.

According to the investigation, the shops were built beside the Rangpur–Nilphamari road using project funds. Officials said the construction and financial transactions were not recorded in the union’s registry, and no approval from higher authorities was obtained. Administrative officer Harunur Rashid confirmed that the council has no record of the deposits or rent and that he has informed higher authorities. Several members and a tenant also stated that the chairman personally collected the money.

Kishoreganj Upazila Executive Officer Arifur Rahman said he is aware of the issue and will take necessary action after further inquiry.

Incidents of rape and sexual violence against women and children have increased across Bangladesh, with the Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s One Stop Crisis Center (OCC) reporting a daily average of four to five rape victims seeking treatment. The OCC treats 150 to 200 rape survivors monthly, mostly girls aged 11 to 18. Officials cite weak law enforcement and social decay as key causes. Victims face repeated questioning that worsens trauma, while unauthorized visitors often breach OCC privacy rules.

According to the Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, 1,035 women and girls faced violence in the first five months of 2026, including 250 rapes and 65 gang rapes. Legal follow-up remains weak: only one-third of OCC cases result in formal complaints, and conviction rates are around one percent. Investigations are delayed due to slow medical reporting and witness absences. The Women and Children Affairs Minister acknowledged enforcement and social mindset as major challenges.

The government announced plans to establish OCCs in all 37 public medical colleges to ensure coordinated support for victims. The initiative aims to expand free medical, legal, and counseling services nationwide.
