Students of the 2019–20 academic session from the Department of Al-Fiqh and Law at Islamic University have launched protests over delayed exams and results.
On Sunday, students began a sit-in in front of the department at noon, later locking its gates at 1:00 p.m. Their three demands are:
Publication of the first-semester results of the fourth year by Monday.
Completion of the second-semester exams by the end of August.
Release of the second-semester results by September 15.
While most of the university’s 36 departments have completed the honours program for the 2019–20 batch, this department has yet to publish the fourth-year first-semester results. The second-semester exams, originally scheduled for June 28, have also been postponed.

The education system is undergoing a rapid transformation driven by technology. Students can now learn at their own pace, get instant feedback, and explore lessons through interactive formats. Online schooling, homeschooling platforms, and AI-based assessments are reshaping traditional learning. These innovations also help teachers with evaluations and content creation. Experts believe future education will be more learner-centered, tech-driven, and universally accessible.
The Ministry of Primary and Mass Education clarified that the “Government Primary School Scholarship Exam” will remain exclusive to students of public schools, to help children from low-income families continue their education through financial support.
Responding to criticism from the Bangladesh Kindergarten Association, the Ministry noted that the majority of public school students come from underprivileged backgrounds, while kindergarten students often hail from more affluent families.
"This program is designed to reduce inequality, not to discriminate," the statement said. The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to promoting inclusive education by targeting those in genuine need of state support.

Switzerland’s unique Vocational Education and Training (VET) system starts at age 15, combining practical work experience with classroom learning. Nearly two-thirds of students choose vocational paths over university, gaining paid apprenticeships in over 250 recognized professions. This dual system ensures students develop relevant skills aligned with labor market needs, contributing to Switzerland’s low youth unemployment. The flexible structure also allows career shifts without bureaucratic hurdles, making it a model for producing a competitive, skilled workforce that drives the country’s strong economy.
Despite its legacy as the “Oxford of the East,” Dhaka University is facing a serious decline in academic quality, research output, and teacher-student engagement. Political interference, unmeritocratic faculty recruitment, and administrative neglect have weakened its core functions. While infrastructure projects have expanded, efforts to improve education and research remain minimal. Experts argue that without prioritizing teacher training, updated curricula, and research integrity, sustainable development is impossible. Dhaka University’s future depends on restoring academic excellence over politicized development.
