Bangladesh’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested one suspect linked to a major online fraud ring that used the name and logo of a reputed trading company to deceive investors. The suspect, Md. Tajul Islam, 31, from Barishal’s Bakerganj area, was detained in Dhaka’s Kalyanpur neighborhood by the CID’s Cyber Intelligence and Risk Management Team. The group allegedly swindled over 2.1 million taka from victims by promising guaranteed profits through an artificial intelligence-based trading software.
According to the case filed on April 5 at Mohammadpur Police Station, the scam began with a Facebook advertisement featuring names and photos of well-known economists and a former World Bank official to gain public trust. Victims were added to WhatsApp groups and encouraged to invest increasing amounts after initial small returns. Investigators found that Tajul Islam supplied bank accounts and debit cards used to launder the stolen funds.
CID officials said the cybercrime network operates beyond Bangladesh and that efforts are ongoing to locate other members. Authorities urged the public to verify online investment offers and report suspected fraud to local police or the Cyber Police Center.

Attorney General Barrister Md. Ruhul Kuddus (Kajal) handed over office assistant Md. Imran Hossain to Shahbagh police on April 16, 2026, accusing him of deliberately withholding a High Court file related to the Non-Government Teachers’ Registration and Certification Authority (NTRCA) recruitment case. An administrative officer from the Attorney General’s Office, Md. Nasir Uddin, filed a criminal case against the assistant, alleging that his actions caused harm to the state.
According to the case statement, the assistant failed to deliver the file concerning the NTRCA principal and vice-principal recruitment writ, preventing the Deputy Attorney General from presenting the government’s position. Following internal complaints, a preliminary inquiry was ordered, which suggested that the assistant intentionally withheld the file, possibly under external influence. The complaint also noted that he might be linked to a group seeking to damage state institutions.
Separately, the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division chamber judge stayed the High Court order that had halted the NTRCA recruitment tests. The Attorney General stated that this decision allows the scheduled April 18 examinations to proceed as planned.

A rubber trader named Omar Faruk, aged 30, was allegedly attacked in Lama upazila of Bandarban after refusing to pay Tk 1 million in extortion money. The allegation was made by his father, Abdus Sabur Babul, during a press conference at the Lama Reporters Unity auditorium on Thursday evening. He claimed that Mahfuz Alam alias Masum, 28, and his associates had long been threatening them for money. Despite paying Tk 15,000 earlier, the group reportedly demanded Tk 1 million more and threatened to destroy their rubber plantation if unpaid.
According to Babul, the attackers, led by Mahfuz Alam, assaulted Omar Faruk on April 14 near Badon’s computer shop in Aziznagar Bazar while he was returning home on a motorcycle with two employees. The assailants allegedly used hockey sticks and iron rods, leaving Faruk seriously injured. He was first taken to Lohagara Health Complex and later transferred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for treatment. The family has sought administrative protection and is preparing to file a case.
Mahfuz Alam has denied all allegations, calling them false.

A group identifying itself as the 'ABCD Group' has issued death threats to officials involved in toll collection at Eidgaon Market in Cox’s Bazar. On April 12, leaflets appeared across the market, the Upazila and Union land offices, and nearby areas, warning that anyone collecting tolls would face fatal consequences. The leaflets specifically named several local officials and claimed that only the group would control toll collection at the market.
Following the circulation of the leaflets, local residents and traders expressed concern over the threats and speculated about the identity of those responsible. Attempts to reach the acting Upazila Nirbahi Officer, Md. Fazle Rabbani Chowdhury, for comment were unsuccessful. However, his assistant Rubel confirmed that the threats began before the Bengali New Year and that the matter had been reported to the administration. He added that tolls were being collected under official supervision as per regulations.
Eidgaon Market, a major commercial hub in southern Chattogram, usually generates significant government revenue through lease auctions. This year, no bids were submitted, forcing the market into direct government collection, which coincided with the emergence of the threats.

Police investigators have confirmed that the firearm used in the killing of Inquilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi was purchased for about Tk 200,000 and eventually reached the main accused shooter, Faisal. Forensic tests verified that the recovered pistol from Narsingdi was the same weapon used in the attack. Authorities have arrested arms trader Majedul Haque Helal, while efforts continue to identify two other intermediaries involved in the weapon’s transfer.
According to investigation sources, the pistol was originally imported from Turkey by M Iich Arms Co. and changed hands through several licensed dealers before ending up with Helal’s firm, Hamidul Haque Arms & Co. The license had expired in 2014 but was not renewed, making subsequent sales illegal. CID Assistant Superintendent Abdul Kadir Bhuiyan stated that forensic analysis matched the bullets and cartridges from the crime scene to the recovered pistol.
The murder occurred on December 12 last year in Bijoynagar when Hadi was shot while returning from a campaign. He later died in Singapore on December 18. The case was later transferred to CID after dissatisfaction with the initial charge sheet filed by the Detective Branch.

A Chattogram court has sentenced Mujibul Haque Chowdhury, chairman of Chambal Union in Banshkhali and Awami League convener, to seven years in prison in a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The verdict was delivered on Thursday, April 16, 2026, by Special Judge Mizanur Rahman. The court also imposed a fine, with an additional one-year jail term in default of payment. Mujibul, who had earlier threatened former US ambassador to Dhaka Peter Haas, remains absconding.

His wife faces a separate case over Tk 8.66 million in alleged illegal assets, which is still under trial.
The report also notes that Mujibul was previously accused of embezzling government funds meant for the ultra-poor and was temporarily suspended after making abusive remarks about international figures, including US President Joe Biden and economist Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 has scheduled April 20 for the charge framing order against eight accused, including former Jessore Superintendent of Police Anisur Rahman, in a case over the 2016 shooting of two Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir leaders in Chougachha. The two-member judicial panel, led by Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumdar with Justice Shofiul Alam Mahmud, fixed the date after hearing arguments on Thursday. Three accused—then Sub-Inspector Akikul Islam and constables Sajjadur Rahman and Jahurul Haque—were produced before the tribunal, while five others, including Anisur Rahman, remain absconding.
Defense lawyers argued that the alleged incident does not constitute crimes against humanity, claiming it was an isolated event outside the scope of systematic or widespread attacks. The prosecution, led by Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam, countered that the case forms part of a broader pattern of targeted abductions, torture, and killings between 2009 and 2015, and urged formal charges to be framed.
According to the case details, the two student leaders were detained, tortured for two nights, and shot in the legs under police orders, leading to severe infections that required amputation.
