The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) is preparing an impartial list of extortionists across Bangladesh, including Dhaka, with plans to take swift legal action against all identified offenders once the list is finalized. The announcement was made by Wing Commander M Z M Intekhab Chowdhury, Director of RAB’s Legal and Media Wing, during a press briefing at the RAB Media Center in Karwan Bazar on Saturday afternoon.

The briefing, originally organized to discuss a major yaba seizure in Chattogram, also addressed the ongoing initiative to identify extortionists. According to RAB, the list is being compiled under directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs. Fifteen RAB battalions have already begun field operations and strengthened intelligence surveillance to ensure accuracy and neutrality. Officials emphasized that no one on the list will be exempt from legal consequences.

RAB stated that the list will be completely unbiased, with no favoritism or political influence, and that action will be taken strictly against proven offenders.

A Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) operation in Chattogram’s Patenga area led to the seizure of 500,000 yaba tablets worth Tk 150 million from a fishing trawler on Friday night, April 10. The raid took place at the 15 No. Ghat area under Patenga Police Station, confirmed by RAB-7 Senior Assistant Director (Media) A. R. M. Mozzafar Hossain. Nine individuals were arrested during the operation, including five Rohingya refugees and four residents of Cox’s Bazar.

According to RAB sources, the drug consignment was being transported by sea from the Cox’s Bazar border area toward Chattogram. When RAB personnel arrived at the scene around 9:30 p.m., several suspects attempted to flee but were captured after a chase. The yaba tablets were later recovered from the trawler’s engine room.

RAB stated that the detainees had long been involved in smuggling yaba from border areas at low prices and distributing them across Chattogram for profit. Legal action has been initiated against all nine suspects.

A video showing a brick kiln worker being tied and beaten in Lakshmipur’s Kamalnagar upazila has gone viral on social media. The incident occurred on April 9 in the Moulvirhat area of Torabganj Union. The victim, identified as Kalu from Charbosu Badamtoli Bazar, was allegedly taken from his in-laws’ house by Ismail, a labor supplier, and assaulted with his hands bound. The six-minute video shows Kalu being beaten and verbally abused while being forced to make promises.

According to local sources, Kalu had agreed to work at a brick kiln in Chattogram for Tk 80,000 but returned home due to illness. Ismail reportedly brought him back from his in-laws’ house, tied him up, and coerced him to have his brothers work in his place. After the video spread online, locals demanded justice. Police later rescued Kalu, while Ismail went into hiding.

Police confirmed that the victim was rescued and said efforts are ongoing to arrest the accused.

Police in Feni have arrested Jubo League leader Delwar Hossain Dalim, aged 45, in connection with a murder case linked to the July Movement. He was detained during a raid at his sister’s residence in Dhaka’s Pallabi area on Friday night and sent to jail through the court on Saturday afternoon.

According to police sources, Dalim, who serves as the organizational secretary of Feni District Jubo League and is a former chairman of Kalidah Union Parishad, is known as a close associate of local politician Nizam Uddin Hazari. He has been named in six cases related to the violent incidents that occurred in Mohipal on August 4, 2024. Additionally, Feni Model Police Station has issued three more arrest warrants against him.

The officer-in-charge of Feni Model Police Station, Gazi Muhammad Fouzol Azim, stated that the exact number of cases against Dalim could not yet be confirmed. Law enforcement authorities said investigations into the cases are ongoing.

A group of drug dealers allegedly attacked Jubo Dal leader Zahid Uddin in Cumilla’s Adarsha Sadar upazila after he tried to stop them from using yaba. The incident occurred on April 10 in the Chapapur area of Jagannathpur Union, shortly after Friday prayers. Zahid Uddin, the joint convener of the upazila Jubo Dal, was seriously injured and is now receiving treatment at Cumilla Medical College Hospital.

Local sources said drug trading has long been active in the border-adjacent area. Following the formation of anti-drug committees under the BNP-led government, tensions rose among local drug dealers. Residents reported that the attackers also injured another man named Rubel, who had earlier informed the anti-drug committee about local drug use. Both victims said the attackers used sharp weapons during the assault.

Victims and local residents believe the attack was retaliation for their anti-drug activities. They have demanded a proper investigation and justice. Cumilla Kotwali Model Police Station’s officer-in-charge said no formal complaint had been received yet but assured action once a report is filed.

A video showing a crocodile dragging a dog from the steps of the pond at the historic Khan Jahan Ali shrine in Bagerhat has gone viral on social media, prompting widespread discussion and criticism. The footage shows the crocodile approaching the dog, biting it, and submerging, while onlookers watched without intervening. The apparent inaction of the spectators has drawn questions from the public.

Local residents later clarified that the dog had been aggressive for several days, attacking people around the shrine area. According to nearby resident Russel and shrine attendant Bina, the dog was not deliberately offered to the crocodile, and misinformation had spread online. They said the dog reached the pond steps while fleeing locals, and the crocodile appeared there coincidentally.

Bagerhat Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Atia Khatun stated that the district administration formed a three-member committee to investigate the incident. The committee is verifying the facts and will confirm the actual circumstances after completing the inquiry.

Authorities in Gaibandha’s Saghata upazila detained two individuals, including a local BNP leader, for illegally extracting sand from the Jamuna River. The arrests followed a report published in the national daily Amar Desh that highlighted the ongoing illegal sand mining in the area. Police conducted the operation on Saturday and detained Jewel Amin and Sabuj Mia from the river site.

According to police and local sources, the two had been extracting sand from the river for a long time, transporting it by tractor over a flood control embankment built at a cost of about Tk 25 crore, which was reportedly at risk due to the activity. Jewel Amin serves as president of Ward No. 3 BNP in Saghata Union and is accused of using political influence to sustain the illegal business. The local BNP unit confirmed that disciplinary action against him is underway.

Saghata Police Station’s officer-in-charge Mahbub Alam said a regular case has been filed and police operations against illegal sand extraction will continue.

An alleged spiritual leader named Shamim Jahangir, aged 55, was killed by an angry mob in Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia on Saturday afternoon following accusations of desecrating the Holy Quran. The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. in Dakshin-Pashchim Philipnagar village under Philipnagar Union. The mob also vandalized and set fire to his religious establishment during the attack.

According to police and local sources, outrage erupted after a video of Shamim Jahangir’s alleged offensive remarks about the Quran spread on social media. Protesters organized a procession and attacked his residence, beating and hacking him severely. He was taken to Daulatpur Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead. Police later arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control, confirming that law enforcement now maintains order.

Police stated that Shamim had previously been arrested in May 2021 on charges of hurting religious sentiments and was later released on bail. Legal proceedings over the latest incident are currently underway.

The Road Safety Foundation reported that 576 road accidents occurred across Bangladesh in March 2026, resulting in 532 deaths and 2,221 injuries. Among the deceased were 66 women and 98 children. Motorcycles were involved in 219 accidents, causing 204 deaths, which accounted for 38.34 percent of total fatalities. The report, released to the media on Saturday, was based on data from newspapers, online portals, electronic media, and the foundation’s own sources.

The analysis showed that 45.83 percent of accidents occurred on regional roads, followed by 29.68 percent on national highways. Most crashes were caused by loss of control (40.10 percent) and head-on collisions (28.81 percent). Dhaka division recorded the highest number of accidents and deaths, while Sylhet had the lowest. The report also noted that daily average fatalities rose by 11.28 percent compared to February.

According to the foundation, excessive speed and loss of vehicle control were the main causes of accidents. It recommended technological monitoring and motivational training for drivers to reduce casualties.

According to the analysis, most accidents occurred on regional and national highways, with 171 on national highways and 264 on regional roads. Motorcyclists accounted for the highest number of fatalities at 204, followed by passengers of three-wheelers and buses. Dhaka division recorded the highest number of deaths, while Sylhet had the lowest. The report noted that most crashes were caused by excessive speed and loss of vehicle control.

The foundation identified faulty vehicles, poor road conditions, reckless driving, and driver incompetence as major causes. It recommended technological monitoring of speed and motivational training for drivers to reduce accidents.

A shocking incident occurred in Khudiram Sarkarpara of Goaland municipality, Rajbari, where a drug-addicted youth attacked his mother for refusing to give him money. The victim, 40-year-old Shikha Rani Ghosh, was severely injured and is now in critical condition at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The attack took place around 3 a.m. on April 10, when her son, 19-year-old Gobinda Ghosh, struck her repeatedly with a machete while she was asleep, severing her left ear and causing deep wounds to her head and neck.

According to police and family sources, Shikha Rani had been living with her son at her parental home after her husband left her about 20 years ago. Gobinda had become addicted to drugs and frequently quarreled with his mother over money. After the attack, neighbors rescued the injured woman and took her to several hospitals before she was transferred to Dhaka for advanced treatment.

Local residents detained Gobinda inside the house and alerted police. Officers from Goaland Ghat Police Station arrested him and seized the blood-stained machete and other evidence. A case has been filed by the victim’s mother, Usha Rani Ghosh, and the accused has been sent to Rajbari court.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered five anti-personnel landmines and various explosive materials near the Naikhongchhari border in Cox’s Bazar. The operation was conducted on April 9 by a patrol team from the Targupara Border Outpost under the 11 BGB Battalion. The recovered items included five suspected improvised explosive devices, a metal detector, a solar panel, dry food, mobile phones, power banks, and civilian clothing. The discovery was made between border pillars 53 and 54 near the zero line.

A fire that broke out at the Chittagong Shopping Complex near Gate No. 2 in Chattogram city was brought under control after two hours of effort by six units of the Fire Service around noon on April 11, 2026. A pedestrian was killed and three others injured in a four-vehicle collision on the Dhaka–Chattogram highway in Mirsarai on Friday night. The accident occurred around 10:30 p.m. in the South Sonapahar area of Jorarganj Union when a pickup, two covered vans, and a steel-laden truck collided. During the crash, a five-ton steel bundle fell from the truck, crushing a pedestrian who was crossing the road. The deceased was identified as Ashraf, 18, of Durgapur Union’s Chaitanyerhat area.

Fire service, police, and locals conducted a rescue operation after receiving an emergency call through the national helpline 999. The injured were taken to Mirsarai Upazila Health Complex, and two critically injured victims were later transferred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital. Ashraf died there while undergoing treatment.

Police later cleared the damaged vehicles and restored traffic flow on the highway, according to Jorarganj Highway Police Station officials.

A mobile court in Bakshiganj upazila of Jamalpur fined a man named Md Jamrul Mia Tk 50,000 for illegally storing and selling petrol and diesel at nearly twice the government-fixed price. The operation took place on Friday night, April 10, 2026, in front of the Messrs Paresh Chandra Saha Filling Station at Tinanipara. The drive was led by Assistant Commissioner (Land) Asma-ul Husna.

According to the operation report, Jamrul Mia had long been storing fuel at his own shop and selling it at inflated prices, creating an artificial shortage. Earlier, authorities had seized 120 liters of petrol from his shop and fined him Tk 10,000 with a warning. Despite that, he continued the illegal practice, prompting renewed action under the Consumer Rights Protection Act.

Officials stated that similar drives against illegal fuel hoarding and overpricing will continue in the area to protect consumers and ensure compliance with government pricing regulations.
