Police in Jianagar, Pirojpur recovered 75 barrels of stolen bitumen that had been left abandoned inside a house in Seutibaria village. The operation was conducted on Tuesday evening, April 21, under the leadership of Sub-Inspector Ismail Hossain. The barrels were found inside the home of Ibadul Kabir Badol Hawlader and taken into police custody. According to police, the bitumen had been lying there for about a month.
House owner Badol Hawlader stated that he lives in Dhaka and was unaware of who had left the bitumen on his property. Earlier, on April 4, police had recovered 59 barrels of stolen bitumen from a work site linked to contractor Shakil Mahmud Palash Hawlader, Badol’s relative. Locals suspect the newly recovered barrels may also belong to Palash, though he denied any involvement, claiming he was being framed by rivals.
Sub-Inspector Saiduzzaman confirmed that several individuals have contacted police claiming ownership of the bitumen. Authorities said the barrels will be handed over through court once valid ownership documents are verified. Several related bitumen theft cases have recently been filed in nearby districts.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized illegal Indian medicines worth about Tk 20 million during an operation in the Muktijoddha Chattar area of Madhabpur upazila, Habiganj. The operation took place on Tuesday afternoon along the Dhaka–Sylhet highway, where a truck was stopped and searched. The contraband medicines and Indian snacks were found hidden under bricks inside sacks. The seized goods were later handed over to the customs office following legal procedures.
According to a press release issued by Lieutenant Colonel Tanzilur Rahman, commander of the Habiganj Battalion (55 BGB), the operation was part of ongoing efforts to curb cross-border smuggling. He stated that BGB remains firm in protecting the border and preventing illegal trade. Intelligence surveillance has been strengthened in border areas to safeguard domestic industries and maintain economic stability.
The BGB official added that similar operations will continue in the future to ensure tighter control over smuggling activities and to support lawful trade practices.

A Bangladeshi expatriate businessman, Abu Naser Shamim, aged 50 and originally from Noakhali’s Companiganj upazila, was shot dead by armed assailants in front of his business establishment in the Bara area near Johannesburg, South Africa. The attack occurred around 5 p.m. local time on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, when the assailants held a pistol to his head and fired multiple rounds, killing him instantly. The incident has plunged his family and local community into mourning.
According to his son, Abu Rafsan Piyas, Shamim had first migrated to South Africa in 2007 and returned there after a brief stay in Bangladesh to expand his business. He reportedly owned four to five enterprises in South Africa. Recently, he had disputes with a business partner from Noakhali over the sale of a large shop, prompting him to install bulletproof glass and hire a security guard for safety. The murder occurred while he was speaking with the guard outside his shop.
Members of the Bangladeshi expatriate community expressed deep sorrow, while the victim’s family urged the government to ensure a proper investigation and repatriate his body to Bangladesh.

Nahida Sultana Brishti, a former student of the Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering department at Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU), has been missing in the United States for five days. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree at the University of South Florida. According to her classmates, she went missing after going out with another student off campus, and both of their phones have since been switched off.
University and state police have begun a joint investigation, with the last phone signal traced inside the campus. The matter has been reported to the Consulate General of Bangladesh in Miami, which stated that the case is being treated seriously and that the FBI may be involved if necessary. Searches in nearby hospitals, airports, and detention centers have so far yielded no results.
Brishti’s family last spoke to her on April 16 and has since been unable to contact her. They have informed the police and the Bangladesh Embassy in the US and are seeking assistance for her safe return. Friends, classmates, and family members have appealed for information and expressed growing concern over her disappearance.
Bangladeshi student in US missing for five days, joint police investigation underway
A 17-year-old student named Ashfaq Kabir Sajid was killed on April 12 in Chattogram after being beaten and thrown into a lift shaft from an under-construction eight-story building. Police arrested three suspects—Mishkatul Kayes, Enayetullah, and Enamul Haque—two days after the incident. Investigators described them as known local criminals linked to youth gangs, with multiple prior cases. The motive behind the killing remains unclear, according to police.
Teen student killed in Chattogram, three suspected gang members arrested

The incident occurred around 7 p.m. on Monday, and the accused teacher went into hiding immediately afterward.
The victim’s mother, Mukta Begum, said she found her son with blood clots on various parts of his body when she visited the madrasa the next morning. She took him to the upazila health complex for treatment and filed a written complaint with Bakerganj police against the teacher and the madrasa’s director, Md. Anwar Hossain. The accused teacher could not be reached for comment, and he disconnected a call upon learning it was from a journalist.
Madrasa director Anwar Hossain expressed regret over the incident but denied allegations of regular abuse at the institution. The Bakerganj upazila education officer stated that corporal punishment is not permitted and that action would be taken following an investigation if a written complaint is received.

He was later taken to the Viral Bus Station area, where he was severely beaten. Locals rescued him and took him to Debidwar Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.

In Sikdar Para, resident Jahanara Begum said a group of armed men in police uniforms entered her house around 3:30 a.m., claiming to search for drugs. They forced her to open a cupboard and took 250,000 taka in cash and about two bhori of gold worth roughly 500,000 taka. The robbers then took her to a neighbor’s house, where they also looted 20,000 taka. Earlier that night, the same group reportedly robbed the home of Mohammad Nurul Absar in Chowkidar Kata, taking cash, mobile phones, and valuables.
Chakaria Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Monir Hossain said he was unaware of the incidents and that no formal complaint had been filed.

Clashes at Chattogram City College leave 20 injured; attackers remain unidentified
Two young motorcyclists, Arif Hossain (17) and Sohan Ahmed (18), were killed in a road accident on Tuesday evening in Jhenaidah. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. at the Panchmail area on the Jhenaidah-Magura highway when their motorcycle was struck by a Mahindra three-wheeler and thrown under a moving truck. Both victims died on the spot after being crushed under the truck’s wheels.
Police confirmed the accident and said the victims were returning to Bijoypur village from Jhenaidah town when the collision took place. The officer-in-charge of Jhenaidah Arappur Highway Police, Mrityunjoy Biswas, stated that efforts are underway to identify and detain the truck using information technology. The bodies have been sent to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to locate the truck and determine the full circumstances of the crash.

They immediately took him to the hospital for treatment. The boy’s family lived on the second floor of the same building, and he reportedly worked at a garment factory. However, the exact cause of his fall remains unknown.
Police are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident to determine whether it was accidental or involved other factors.
Teen dies after falling from fifth-floor rooftop in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area
Five people, including the prime suspect, have been arrested in connection with an armed attack on Dr. Ahmad Hossain, deputy director of the National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital in Mohakhali, Dhaka. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) carried out the arrests following the incident, which occurred on Monday afternoon when the doctor was returning home. According to RAB, the attack was planned over a tender dispute involving hospital contracts, and hired assailants were paid twenty thousand taka to carry out the assault.
At a press briefing at RAB’s media center in Karwan Bazar, RAB’s Legal and Media Wing Director Wing Commander M Z M Intekhab Chowdhury detailed the investigation. The suspects—Shariful Alam alias Karim, Aminul Islam alias Kalu, Sajjad alias Bodi, Salauddin, and Arifuzzaman—were detained from different parts of Dhaka. Preliminary findings indicate a long-standing conflict between two groups, “Rubel’s EME Traders” and “Monayem Group,” over hospital tenders. Rubel, currently in Malaysia, is alleged to have masterminded the attack and instructed local associates to execute it.
RAB stated that operations are continuing to arrest the remaining suspects and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring public safety and upholding the rule of law.
