Police arrested Gunaighar Uttar Union Parishad Chairman Mokbal Hossain Mukul from his office in Debidwar upazila of Cumilla on Monday morning. The arrest took place at the union council office following a police operation based on secret information.

According to police sources, Mukul was an accused in multiple murder cases linked to the July Movement and had been absconding for a long time. Acting on a tip-off, law enforcement officers conducted a raid and detained him from the office premises.

Debidwar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Moniruzzaman confirmed that two murder cases related to the July Movement are pending against the accused. Police said he will be produced before the Cumilla court.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed announced that a special operation is underway across Bangladesh targeting illegal arms, drugs, and extortion. He stated that identified top criminals will face investigation and legal action regardless of their status. The minister made the remarks on Monday, May 4, after the first meeting of the National Committee on Coordination, Management, and Law and Order concerning forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals (Rohingya) at the Secretariat.

Two men who introduced themselves as Chinese citizens fled after being questioned by villagers during a wedding event in Chamari Fatepur village of Anaitara Union, Mirzapur, Tangail, on Sunday, May 3. Locals became suspicious after noticing inconsistencies in the men’s behavior and speech, prompting them to interrogate the pair, who then escaped the scene.

Residents said similar incidents have recently appeared on social media, where individuals posing as foreign nationals, particularly Chinese, build relationships with young women and later disappear after taking money or jewelry under the pretense of marriage. Locals have urged greater vigilance against such scams.

Mirzapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed that no formal complaint had been filed but emphasized the importance of awareness when forming online relationships with strangers to prevent fraud.

A 22-year-old man named Hasan Shikdar from Shibchar upazila in Madaripur district attempted suicide by climbing a 460-foot electric tower on the night of May 3, 2026, following the breakup of his romantic relationship. He threatened to jump unless his former partner agreed to reconcile and come to the site. Police, fire service personnel, rural electricity staff, and his family members rushed to the scene after being alerted.

Hasan’s friend also arrived and climbed the tower to persuade him to come down. After about four and a half hours of negotiation, Hasan was safely brought down around 11 p.m. under the supervision of the rescue team. Police then took him into custody for protection and later handed him over to his family. The incident drew a large crowd of onlookers near the tower.

According to the Shibchar Fire Service Station Officer, the rescue operation was conducted through continuous communication and persuasion until Hasan agreed to descend safely.

The High Court has temporarily suspended bench officer Zakir Hossain following allegations of bail forgery involving Sahedul Islam, the main accused in the Kuki-Chin apparel manufacturing case. The decision became known on Monday morning. Attorney General brought the matter to the Chief Justice’s attention on April 29, after which the Chief Justice ordered a 48-hour investigation into the incident.

According to investigation sources, about seven months earlier, Sahedul Islam, owner of Ringvo Apparels in Chattogram, applied for bail in the High Court. On September 16, 2025, the case was heard by a bench comprising Justice Mostafa Zaman Islam and Justice Abdullah Yusuf Sumon. During the hearing, a different case’s documents were presented, misleading the court into granting bail. The forgery occurred later when the bail order’s first page was altered to include details of the Kuki-Chin apparel seizure case, leading prison authorities to release Sahedul based on the falsified order.

The original case involved the seizure of 20,300 garments allegedly made for the KNF from Ringvo Apparels’ warehouse in Bayezid Bostami, Chattogram, on May 17, 2025. The garments were reportedly ordered for about two crore taka, and a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act was filed against Sahedul and two others.

Two people were killed and two others injured in a collision between a truck and a pickup van on the Dhaka-Tangail Jamuna Bridge Highway early Monday morning. The accident occurred around 5:15 a.m. in the Rabna Bypass area of Tangail district. The identities of the victims were not immediately known.

According to the in-charge of the Elenga Highway Police Outpost, the Jamuna Bridge-bound truck collided with a pickup van while overtaking on the Rabna flyover. Two people died on the spot, and two others sustained injuries. The deceased were taken to the morgue of Tangail General Hospital, while the injured were admitted for treatment.

Police said the bodies would be handed over to the families after completing legal procedures.

A rice trader named Abdul Haque was seriously injured and robbed of about two lakh taka by masked assailants in the Moinpur area of Chhatak upazila, Sunamganj. The incident occurred between 10 and 11 p.m. on Sunday near the old hospital and bridge area of Moinpur. Abdul Haque, son of Azhar Ali from Katashala village under Dolar Bazar Union, was returning home on a motorcycle with business money when the attackers ambushed him.

The assailants used sharp local weapons to attack him, leaving him critically wounded before fleeing with the cash. Locals rescued the injured trader and provided initial treatment before transferring him to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital as his condition worsened. Residents expressed concern over the security situation in the area following the attack.

Police from the Jahidpur outpost visited the scene, and Chhatak Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman stated that operations are ongoing to identify and arrest those involved.

The body of Bangladeshi student Jamil Ahmed Limon, who was brutally killed in Florida, has arrived in Dhaka. The remains reached Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 8:40 a.m. on Monday, May 4. The repatriation process was supervised by Consul General Seheli Sabrin and Consul Thoing from the Bangladesh Consulate General in Miami. Following the recovery of Limon’s body on April 25, all legal formalities were completed through coordination among the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington, the Miami Consulate, the victim’s family, his university, local Bangladeshi expatriates, and law enforcement authorities.

Earlier, a funeral prayer for Limon was held at the Islamic Society of Tampa Bay Area mosque after the noon prayer, attended by students from the University of South Florida, his relatives, consular officials, media representatives, and members of the local Bangladeshi community.

Meanwhile, preparations are underway to send the body of another Bangladeshi student, Nahida Sultana Brishti, who was also killed in the same incident. The investigation agency of Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal has found evidence of 32 killings during Hefazat-e-Islam’s rally at Shapla Chattar in Dhaka’s Motijheel area. The agency is preparing to submit a final report accusing 25 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, and former DMP Commissioner Benazir Ahmed. A fire broke out in the engine of a moving commuter train on the Lalmonirhat–Burimari route near Hatibandha station in Lalmonirhat on Sunday afternoon. The incident occurred about one kilometer from the station, causing panic among passengers. The train, identified as Lalmonirhat–Burimari Commuter No. 71, was stopped immediately after the fire was noticed.

According to witnesses and passengers, students from a nearby madrasa first saw the flames and alerted others by shouting. The train authorities halted the train, and local residents along with the students attempted to extinguish the fire. Fire service personnel from Hatibandha later arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control.

Hatibandha Fire Service official Imran Hasan stated that no injuries were reported. He suggested that a mechanical fault might have caused the fire, though the exact reason is yet to be confirmed.

A tragic accident in Patiya, Chattogram, claimed the life of Shahidul Islam Rafiz, an 18-year-old activist of the student wing Chhatra Dal. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon at a construction site beside the Patiya Bypass Road in Bhati Khain Union. Rafiz, who was working as an assistant to a painter, fell from a ladder about nine feet high inside the building and sustained severe injuries. He was taken to Patiya Hospital, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival.

According to the site contractor Md. Shahid, Rafiz fell accidentally while painting. Dr. Rupa Barua of Patiya Hospital confirmed that he had died before reaching the hospital. Rafiz, the only son of expatriate Jasim Uddin from Lalar Khil village in Khornna Union, had stopped studying after the tenth grade. His family was unaware that he was working as a painter’s assistant.

Former union council member and BNP leader Abdul Karim said Rafiz was an active Chhatra Dal worker who regularly participated in party programs, and his sudden death has cast a shadow of grief over the area.

A veterinarian named Animesh Parmanay, aged 50, was abducted in Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira on Saturday morning. He went missing around 10 a.m. after leaving home for duty, and by evening, his wife received a phone call demanding Tk 2 million as ransom. The abductors also threatened the family to keep the matter secret. His brother, Priyanath Parmanay, filed a general diary at Shyamnagar Police Station following the incident.

According to family sources, Animesh’s phone remained switched off throughout the day, and later an unknown caller used his number to inform the family of the abduction. Upazila Livestock Officer Subrata Kumar Biswas said Animesh had long been working as an artificial insemination worker in the Koikhali Union and that his disappearance caused concern among colleagues. They urged his immediate rescue.

Officer-in-Charge Khaledur Rahman of Shyamnagar Police Station stated that efforts are underway to trace the phone’s location. Police conducted raids at several places on Saturday night and found an abandoned house. The investigation continues with priority to rescue the victim.

A man was killed in a road accident in Jhenaidah’s Sadar upazila on Sunday night while fleeing after stealing a motorcycle. The incident occurred in the Nagarbathan area when the suspect, identified as Masud Hossain of Sadhuhati village, attempted to escape after stealing a motorcycle belonging to a man named Russel from the Paglakanai area of Jhenaidah town.

According to police and local sources, Masud’s motorcycle collided head-on with a microbus coming from the opposite direction on the Jhenaidah-Chuadanga highway. The impact threw him onto the road, killing him on the spot. A rescue team from the Jhenaidah Fire Service recovered the body and sent it to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Highway Police Officer-in-Charge Jahanur Hossain said the body and the stolen motorcycle were recovered, and legal procedures are underway.

An 18-year-old college student named Md. Sakib Hossain drowned while bathing in a swimming pool with friends in Demra’s Konapara area of Dhaka on Sunday afternoon. The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. when Sakib, an HSC examinee from Donia College, went swimming after playing football with about 16 friends who had rented the Samsi Sports Gallery pool for 3,200 taka.

According to his friend Ifat Patwari, Sakib suddenly went underwater while everyone was bathing. Pool staff and friends rescued him unconscious and took him first to a local hospital, then to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 2 p.m., where doctors declared him dead after examination. Police confirmed that the body was kept in the hospital morgue and the local police station was informed.

Sakib was the only son of Arif Ali, an electrician from Donia Barabari area in Kadamtali.
