A Dhaka court on Wednesday issued arrest warrants against Transcom Group CEO Simeen Rahman, her mother Shahnaz Rahman, and director Shamsuzzaman Patwary in a case alleging misappropriation of 14,160 company shares through forged signatures and fake stamps. The warrants were issued by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Sefatullah after accepting a charge sheet filed by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI). Later that afternoon, the three accused surrendered before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana’s court, which granted them bail.

The charge sheet, submitted on January 11 by PBI Inspector Syed Sazedur Rahman, accuses six individuals in total. It alleges that a June 13, 2020 board meeting approving share transfers never actually took place, and that forged signatures of family members were used to transfer shares to Simeen Rahman. Investigators found irregularities in documents submitted to the Registrar of Joint Stock Companies and Firms (RJSC), including absence of required physical presence during share transfer and delayed payment of fees.

The court set February 2 for submission of a progress report on the case.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against 21 individuals, including 12 former members of the Public Service Commission (PSC) and a former secretary, for allegedly appointing six candidates to cadre positions under a fake freedom fighter quota. The appointments were made six months after the publication of the 29th BCS results, despite the candidates not applying under that quota. The accused include officials currently serving as deputy secretaries, a police superintendent, and others in key government roles.

According to the ACC, the irregularities stem from the 29th BCS examination held in 2008. After a 16-year investigation, the commission found serious discrepancies in the recruitment process. The accused have been charged under sections 420, 467, 468, 471, and 109 of the Penal Code, as well as section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947.

The ACC’s findings indicate that the six appointed officials are currently holding important positions, and the case highlights long-standing procedural flaws in the recruitment system.

A report by the Road Safety Foundation revealed that 219 people were killed and 511 injured in 409 road accidents across Dhaka in 2025. The data, released through a press statement by the organization’s executive director Saidur Rahman, showed that 80.36 percent of the victims were men, 11.41 percent women, and 8.21 percent children. Pedestrians accounted for 47.03 percent of the fatalities, while motorcyclists and passengers made up 43.37 percent.

The report identified that most accidents occurred at night, accounting for 41.56 percent of total incidents. Buses were involved in 24.87 percent of the accidents, while trucks and similar heavy vehicles made up 35.14 percent. The foundation attributed the rising number of accidents to severe mismanagement in traffic operations, reckless driving, and the absence of a bypass road, which allows heavy vehicles to move through the city at night. Key accident hotspots included Jatrabari, Demra, Mohammadpur, Kuril Bishwa Road, and Airport Road.

To reduce accidents, the report recommended measures such as introducing company-based bus services, removing unfit vehicles, creating separate bus lanes, enforcing school transport systems, building bypass roads, and improving pedestrian infrastructure.

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 has ordered the start of the trial against Sajib Wazed Joy, son of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and former State Minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak. The tribunal, chaired by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Mojumdar, issued the order on January 21, 2026, after forming charges in a case related to crimes against humanity during the July uprising. The decision followed hearings held on January 15, where both prosecution and defense presented arguments.

The charges include incitement to violence, aiding killings, and involvement in 34 murders in Uttara. The prosecution had earlier submitted formal charges on December 4, and the tribunal had ordered Joy to surrender through newspaper notices on December 10.

The tribunal’s order marks the formal beginning of proceedings in one of the key cases arising from the July 2024 events, with both defendants facing serious allegations of crimes against humanity.

A Japanese court has sentenced Tetsuya Yamagami to life imprisonment for the 2022 assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Judge Shinichi Tanaka delivered the verdict on Wednesday, concluding a case that shocked Japan and the world. Yamagami admitted to shooting Abe in broad daylight during a campaign event in the southern city of Nara. Prosecutors had sought a life sentence, calling the killing an unprecedented event in Japan’s postwar history that had a negative impact on society, while the defense requested a maximum of 20 years.

According to the case details, Yamagami’s mother was a follower of the Unification Church and had donated nearly all her assets, leaving the family in financial distress. Yamagami reportedly became angry after learning of Abe’s alleged ties to the controversial church. On July 8, 2022, he used a homemade gun made from pipes and duct tape to shoot Abe twice while the former leader was giving a speech. Abe was taken to a hospital but died shortly afterward.

The court’s ruling brings closure to one of Japan’s most shocking acts of violence in recent decades.

A Dhaka court has ordered the appointment of a receiver to oversee and protect immovable properties seized in a corruption case against former Air Force chief Air Chief Marshal Sheikh Abdul Hannan and his wife Tahmida Begum. The directive came from the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge and Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court after hearing an application from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The ACC disclosed the court’s decision in a press release issued on Tuesday.

According to court sources, the ACC filed the application due to the absence of a caretaker, which posed a risk of the properties being misappropriated. The ACC investigation alleges that Sheikh Abdul Hannan and his wife abused power, accepted bribes, and acquired wealth beyond known income sources. The inquiry and investigation into these allegations are still ongoing.

Under the court order, two flats in Nikunja-2, a large apartment in Mirpur DOHS, a 320-square-yard plot in the Mirpur Military Officers’ Housing Project, and two plots in Rupganj, Narayanganj, will now be under the receiver’s control to ensure proper management and protection of state interests.

A Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) officer was beaten to death and three others were seriously injured during an operation in the remote jungle area of Chhalimpur in Sitakunda, Chattogram. The incident occurred when RAB members raided the area based on intelligence that a top local criminal, Yasin, and his associates were present near a BNP office. The attackers captured four RAB members, assaulted them, and transported them to Alinagar, where they were beaten repeatedly. One officer, Abdul Motaleb, later died in hospital, while three others remain injured.

BNP leaders denied having any office or activities in Chhalimpur and rejected any involvement in the killing. Local residents said the building previously served as an Awami League office before being taken over by expelled BNP youth leader Rokon Uddin, and later by Yasin’s group. The area has long been a haven for armed groups, with multiple deadly clashes over territorial control.

Authorities announced plans for a large-scale joint operation involving RAB, police, army, and other agencies to dismantle criminal strongholds, recover government land, and bring those responsible for the officer’s killing to justice.

In Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar, allegations have surfaced that a group is continuing the construction of a multi-storey building despite a court injunction. The dispute centers on land in East Taipalong under Rajapalong Union, where Shahina Akter, wife of expatriate Mohammad Sharif, claims her purchased property has been forcibly occupied by several influential locals. Police sub-inspector Suman Dey visited the site and instructed both parties to comply with the order, but construction allegedly continued. Shahina Akter accused the police of bias and expressed concern for her family’s safety.

The accused, Shah Newaz Begum alias Paki, claimed the land is ancestral property and that they continued work based on advice from police and lawyers. The investigating officer confirmed that a report has been submitted to the court, with a hearing scheduled for January 21. Locals have urged immediate enforcement of the court order to prevent potential violence.
